John 3 is about God revealing himself increasingly clearly to humanity and - in this case - Nicodemus. Jesus' attitude towards Satan and demons should inform our own. Note: Jesus healed the sick but cast out demons. They were different. I try to encourage those going through a hard time but don't side-step the fact that God's 'sovereignty' can pose some very real pastoral questions.

The followers of Jesus experienced God first in the pages of their Scriptures (the Old Testament), then in Jesus, then in the Holy Spirit when he came at Pentecost. John 3 is about God revealing himself increasingly clearly to humanity and - in this case - Nicodemus. I have included a prayer for us all to pray: 'Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit - do your work of revelation, redemption and re-creation in my life today.'

This is a second bite at the Lent 4 Matthew 11 cherry - apologies if you're looking for the original video. This one feels as if I have crept a little closer to what Jesus was saying when he said, 'Come unto me... I will give you rest'. I list those who we might instinctively think are 'burdened' and of course anyone with any burden can bring it to Jesus. But I wanted to focus more on the 'ordinary' person who just motors on, maybe with no identifiable 'burden'. This week: 'Since in Adam all die'. I can't think how I made a mistake about the second half of verse 22 - it doesn't go into a major mode like the second half of verse 21. It stays minor. I don't know what was in Handel's head when he made that decision but the phrase still emits contrasting energy. If you have an insight on this, please comment! The Bible reflection is on 1 Corinthians 15:12-26. Using powerful logic, Paul appeals to the Christians in Corinth. 'Come on guys, it's a FACT that Jesus rose from the dead so sin is gone and death is gone.' This is such GOOD NEWS!

For the next 5 weeks of Lent (based on the ABCDEFG pattern) rather than take a lectionary passage for the weekly video, I have decided to use my local Lent course based on Handel's Messiah. How difficult is it for the Creator of the universe to do that? It's Jesus' first 'signpost' to his identity. I am continuing to follow the Bible study pattern I gave two weeks ago and used last week: A - approach; B - background; C - context; D - detail; E - experience; F - final thought; G - Go with God! I hope you enjoy the things that caught my attention. Dig around for answers to the questions you asked. There are more answers than you think - use the internet, but be discerning! The answer to John's question, 'Who is Jesus?' is rather important. If he is a human being as God intended us all to be and God in person, then he is at the hub of everything and not a satellite...

··· ··· ··· ··· The visit of the wise men to Jesus, now a child. Mary and Joseph must have found somewhere more 'permanent' to stay - they can't have gone back home, Jesus is more than a baby by this time. There's no timeline in the Bible so we have to guess at that. But who is this child? That's the question. I've identified two old testament readings that I think shed light on what's going on, Psalm 72 and Isaiah 60. This is no ordinary visit on the spur of the moment. It's part of an ongoing plan devised by members of the Trinity from a heart of compassion for a human race that seems to be unable to help itself. Jesus comes as Saviour and redeemer. How can we resist 'so great a salvation'? (Hebrews 2:3)

Yes we are and no he wasn't. John the B was in the line of prophets under the old covenant - yet he seems to anticipate the new with his message of forgiveness on the basis of repentance and confession symbolised by baptism. Or was the message of a relationship with God always on the basis of faith? Wasn't Abraham before Moses? Why did so many people flock to the river where John was? What was it about the religious system that wasn't satisfying to the soul and helping them make peace with God? Gosh - so many questions. You'll have to watch the video to see if any of them are answered! There's a generally upbeat mood to this video. After all confession and forgiveness are good news aren't they? ··· ··· ··· ··· So here we go again, folks, telling the story of Jesus from the first Advent candle to his ascension back to glory - where he waits to return, which is what Advent is all about really, though it feels like the run up to Christmas. I try to describe how I see 'judgment' - and of course you are always welcome to shout back at the screen. But at least I will have made you think. Advent means 'coming towards'. Just as the world waits for the coming of Jesus at Christmas, so we also wait for the second coming of Jesus. But why is he coming? To gather all those who have been clothed with his forgiveness. The world has already been judged and sentence passed. Jesus paid that sentence on the cross on our behalf so that we might know the joy of sins forgiven and a bright new sin-free future. Are you one of the forgiven yet? What could this Advent mean for you?  If there's anyone you know who might benefit from this important headline for the world to hear, feel free to pass it on.

··· ··· ··· ··· Sunday before Advent aka 'Christ the King'. Adapting Descartes, 'Because Jesus is, I am. Because Jesus is, we are' - in other words, there is a faith fusion between Jesus and the one who trusts him. Whatever happens to Jesus happens to me and to us, the church. The forgiveness of 1:3-14 becomes a prayer to know God not just know about him, an awareness of the riches of fellowship with other forgiven believers and an assurance of glorious future, all achieved by the same power of God that raised Jesus from the dead. I make a rather outrageous claim that the only truth we can absolutely know is the deal and resurrection of Jesus. Of course there are a lot more things of which we can be certain, but these historical events are the hub of all the other certainties. Video features 'King of Kings' and 'We preach Christ', perfomed by the International staff songsters of the Salvation Army.

··· ··· ··· ··· Trinity 7 - Isaiah, living and working in the South of the country (Jerusalem) about 740-701BC. Assyria has nobbled the north and had an unsuccessful nibble at the south. Isaiah sees on and beyond to the next empire that is coming on the scene - Babylon - which does nobble the south - and even further into the release of the exiles from Babylon by Cyrus, the king of Persia. He even specifies his name centuries before he is born. God takes - and communicates - the long view to his spokespeople. Faith is living every day trusting in a God the like of which there is no other - even when he sees absent. It's in that very moment that faith kicks in.

Today I am using Isaiah 55 to say that there is plenty of evidence for faith, that faith is never 'blind'. God is very visual in his communication. So faith is lining up the evidence and choosing too believe it. At the end I use a very clever video clip of someone walking Striding Edge - and I have given full credit for the link. It's worth watching. Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band promote the old !8th and !9th century 'gallery bands' - that is, the group of players and singers that used to sit in the musicians' gallery in churches and provide the music for the singing before the advent of organs and the fellowship of the group was lost to the ownership of one. Through Zechariah, God offers words of encouragement and hope to his people, dilliusioned and despondent on returning from exile in Babyon. He calls Israel, 'Daughter of Zion' - investing her with the royal identity she once had as his people but had spurned so often and so consistently. That's grace. I include a few coathanger headings to help place the events in Old Testament history here: Eden - Egypt - Exodus - Entry into the Promised Land - Exile from it (Assyria then Babylon) - Emancipation by Persia - End of the Old Testament. Further empires supplanting one another will be Greece (Alexander the Great) and Roman. If Israel is still under foreign domination, who will fulfil God's promise of a Messiah King? Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey, just as Zechariah had described. It was a deliberate declaration of kingship.

Continuing a series through the Sundays in the Trinity season reflecting on what it means to be a 'Follower of the Way', how followers of Jesus were known before the nickname 'Christian'. Today: 'Walk in God's peace'. Jeremiah feels God has given him a duff deal. What he has to say runs contrary to the state prophets who say what the people want to hear. Ultimately his authority is vindicated as what he had spoken happened. But in this moment, Jeremiah wishes he had never been born. He doesn't;t have much 'peace' - till he acknowledges that God is with him in it, not the originator of all the disasters that befall him. His blend of honesty and humility bring him rest of heart, 'peace'.

··· ··· ··· ··· Trinity 1: 'Walk in wisdom' - Hosea's story is iconic of God's relationship with his people - he is faithful to the promises they made together on Sinai but they aren't, and haven't been for a long time and don't look set to change. God sends messengers to call them back. He even sends hard circumstances in an act of tough love since their lack of wisdom brings them disorderliness and disarray and deep insecurity. Wisdom starts with knowing God. In this video is a minute's clip of the cartoon version of 'Pilgrim's Progress'. This Sunday begins a series of reflections on how to walk 'the Way' and since where I live is on the Pilgrim's way, that has sort of become a leit motive for the series. Next week: Exodus 19:2-8 'Walk in faithfulness'.

46:: Pentecost (Acts 2:1-11) May 28th 2023 SD 480p

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 26.05.2023 · 19:58:57 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Pentecost: a Jewish celebration both of the ingathering of the Spring harvest 50 days after Passover but also the giving of the law by God to his people via Moses at Sinai. So it's not out of line to interpret this extraordinary event in the lives of the 120 believers praying together in an upper room as both the gathering in of people whose responsive hearts the Spirit of Jesus has touched and the creation of a people who would so live his way, obediently, like him, making him visible to the world. In this video I make the point that 'diversity' in the world is not the same as'diversity' in the church. For the Christian, rainbow colours originate from one light source - Jesus. Our 'diversity' is not individualism but employing our individuality to help one another live like Jesus, not seek self fulfilment. One thing I learned as a result of studying for this was that anointing was to signify the meeting of heaven and earth - hence God 'anointing' the tabernacle and Temple, then Jesus at his baptism. And now Jesus' followers are 'anointed' by the Spirit and heaven and earth meet in us, when we are gathered and in ourselves. Wow! Forgive the slightly screwed up eyes, I was battling with a gloriously sunny day...

47:: Ascension (Acts 1:6-14) May 21st 2023 SD 480p

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 18.05.2023 · 10:59:57 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Acts 1:6-14 Good - the lectionary has not by-passed the chapter of Jesus' 'ascension' - the account of him going home back to glory. Sometimes it feels as if Pentecost is the immediate focus after the resurrection. But Jesus' ascension is the punchline to a story which has only ever been about reconnecting God with you and I, human beings. I recorded it by my open door; I see this event as heaven's door being swung open as we follow Jesus into God's presence. All that the tabernacle and temple were in the Old covenant are still true - but now being enacted in heaven, Jesus the new and permanent sacrifice, the sinless High Priest, offering new and permanent forgiveness and waiting to return - to bring all the blessings of his rule back to us, just as in the days when he was here with us the first time around. It's a long time since that promise that Jesus would return to put the world to rights, bringing justice, peace and beauty back to it. But we still live with the confidence that whatever happens in our world, international, national or personal, Jesus will judge it and bring all to a good end. Or will that just be the beginning?

48:: Acts 17:22 34 May 14th 2023 SD 480p

··· ··· ··· ··· Easter 6: Paul is in Athens. He debates with the philosophers in the Areopagus. 'You have a shrine dedicated to an unknown god', he says. 'Well, I know him.' 'He is Lord of all. He sets boundaries and benchmarks. And he blesses us.' 'You can know him too - he wants to be discovered.' I sneaked a a couple of soapboxes into my reflection... Paul was going great guns until he started on the theme of resurrection. People will debate 'god' for ever round a pub table but start to talk about Jesus and the conversation grinds to a halt. There's no speculation about God if he has already defined himself in Jesus. Paul had three responses to his speech. Some scoffed, some wanted to know more, some believed immediately. Uploaded on the day of the Eurovision final... I think you'll like the end music...

49:: Coronation weekend (Easter 5 Acts 7:55-60) May 7th 2023 SD 480p

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 06.05.2023 · 16:46:42 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Acts 7:55-60 The story of Stephen's stoning may not seem a promising reading for the Coronation weekend, except that as Stephen dies under a battery of stones, he sees Jesus 'standing at the right hand of God'. Now there IS a gift of a picture: King Jesus, risen and ascended Lord, standing in a place of authority. There are only a few places in the Bible where royalty stands: in anger and to honour. I can imagine Jesus standing in anger at Stephen's opponents and in honour of his faithful witness, Stephen. However magnificent a picture Stephen saw, is it true? Is Jesus an 'empire-builder'? Yes - read Daniel 7:13-14 and Philippians 2:8-11 to see the extent of the authority he has been given. His loving leadership has been the plan all along. If this is true, then Jesus has to be good. If Jesus is good, then his leadership is welcome in our disordered world. There's no halfway house on this one, no 'grey area'. Either Jesus is at the right hand of God or he isn't. What do you think? Here's a link to a related video I made (before the death of the Queen) https://youtu.be/wcPfyJLVNj8

50:: Acts 2:42-47 April 30th 2023 SD 480p

··· ··· ··· ··· Easter 4: In this video I have tried to show how our gathered worship today, whatever our denomination, is just the same as that of the very first church, all 3120 members of it (that's 3000 who came to faith as a result of hearing Peter's sermon plus the 120 that were gathered in the upper room waiting for the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:15)... The video opens with a church from India singing the hymn, 'The Church's one foundation' to emphasise the point that God's new covenant people comprises all who respond to Jesus across the world - not just the west! Indeed, God is adding to the church today - in places where the name of Jesus is not so familiar that it has bred contempt. This description of the life of the earliest church is a good checklist for us 2000+ years later. They were committed to the Bible, to each other, to the name and story of Jesus and to prayer. They had glad and generous hearts. They were faithful and God blessed them. Is there a lesson here for those churches who are discouraged because they are few or who think that it's all about entertainment and social media???

··· ··· ··· ··· Easter 2: Today begins a 5 week exploration of the eye-witnesses who told the story of Jesus. Simon the fisherman turns into Pete the preacher as he emerges from the first encounter Jesus' followers have with the Holy Spirit (who Jesus promised would make them his witnesses when he ascended back to glory Acts 1:8). Peter says that there's plenty of incontrovertible evidence about who Jesus is, what he has done, where he is now and what is yet to happen. The story can be believed and trusted today. I include a hymn for you to singalong to, 'To God be the glory' (from the Royal Albert Hall) and at the end is an arrangement by a good friend, Richard Phillips (who is also playing the piano) of a song my father wrote a very long time ago. The words are: 'Glory to his name, glory to his name, now to my heart is the blood applied, glory, glory to his name,' That's the name of Jesus, of course and applying his blood to our hearts means that his forgiveness and cleansing have become effective in our lives as we have trusted this true story about Jesus. I turn 70 this week, but since the Easter story of dodging death can be believed, I'm going to live for ever. It's a promise made by a reliable God...

Jesus leads us into true 'freedom'.
