The trio discuss distilling and blending practices, basically all things Balcones, but touch on the category and future of American Single Malt writ large.  This episode is paired quite well with an SCN release of Balcones -- a massively delicious single malt made exclusively from the legendary Golden Promise barley. Single Cask Nation has been releasing whiskies in collaboration with Westland Distillery since 2014. This release highlights the 2nd time Joshua and Jason welcomed 25 dedicated Nation members to the distillery to help select this banger of a whisky. Launching on Thursday, June 6th, 2024 at 12pm EDT and bottled at 52.3% ABV, this single cask of Westland 9yo Sauternes cask matured American Single Malt whisky, yielded just 176 bottles and will sell for only $125 on singlecasknation.com -- notes are as follows: Color: Red brass Nose: Opens on rich red fruits and warm, welcoming grain, the warm hug continues with warm apricot jam, and warm Hostess™ pie crust, crushed lingonberries, pecan pie, walnut skins, shaved dark chocolate, hints of vanilla extract and, separately, a struck match in a distant room Palate: Classic Westland five-malt heft leads the way with cinnamon sticks and Mexican dark chocolate close behind, shaved almonds appear mid-palate before dehydrated apricots and gray pepper notes build as it transitions towards the finish Finish: Moderate to long with lingering dark chocolate notes but note the soft oak spice, rich grain, and gentle, sweet earthiness Joshua and Jason interviewed Matt Hofmann and Steve Hawley from Westland Distillery a good number of times on their podcast One Nation Under Whisky. This is Single Cask Nation's 2nd bottling from the Balcones distillery but their first one where the focus is on a heritage strain of barley known as "Golden Promise". This particular grain hit legendary status as it's the grain once used (and was made famous by) The Macallan Distillery in the 1980's. Just a remarkable and robust strain of barley. Launching on Thursday, June 6th, 2024 at 12pm EDT and bottled at 64.15% ABV, this single cask of Balcones 4yo "Golden Promise" American Single Malt whisky yielded just 161 bottles and will sell for only $85 on singlecasknation.com -- notes are as follows: Color: Red Brass Nose: Rich and warm with abundant molasses, brown sugar, toffee apples, and roasted chicory at first sniff then dark chocolate with cherries, apple butter, green Jolly Rancher™, morning latte and even, stick with us here, unlicked antique postage stamps! Palate: An oily texture that envelops the tongue with rich and warm notes of rum cake, German brown bread, baked apples with nutmeg, cardamom, and a generous dusting of warm cinnamon, barbecue sauce, and sweet, damp oak with a hint of spearmint as we transition towards the finish Finish: Long, longer, longest with lasting texture and abundant dark flavors: roasted coffee beans, 90% cocoa dark chocolate, and burnt molasses, however, don’t miss the Boston Creme donut in the final finish While there is a 2024 interview forthcoming, Joshua and Jason interviewed Zack Pilgrim, now passed, sadly, Distiller at Balcones in Season 1 Episode 25 of their podcast One Nation Under Whisky. Catoctin Creek is one of a very small handful of distilleries around the world that are producing rye whisky using 100% rye grain. Their love and dedication to the grain is quite evident in both their distillation and maturation. There's no doubt about it: Catoctin Creek make rye whisky for rye whisky lovers. This particular cask is unlike anything ever bottled from the world of rye whisky. The distillate spent 3 years in a cask that first held Catoctin Creek rye, then held Barleywine (beer) from Virginia's Rocket Frog brewery. This was a project that Joshua and Jason worked on with both the distillery and brewery for over 5 years to come to fruition. To say they're proud of the whisky and happy with the results would be a *massive* understatement. Launching on Thursday, June 6th, 2024 at 12pm EDT and bottled at 56.8% ABV, this single cask of Catoctin Creek Rye whisky yielded just 118 bottles and will sell for only $95 on singlecasknation.com -- notes are as follows: Color: Burnished copper Nose: Soft rye bread notes are followed by warm toffee, golden raisins, and gentle cinnamon – oak spice builds over time Palate: Oily entry with an attention grabbing rye spiciness that’s quickly followed with a warm caramel hug, apple pie (roasted apples, buttery crust, and baking spices), fennel seed, and chocolate hazelnut spread (from the Co-Op rather than the supermarket) Finish: Long, warming, and lasting with lingering caramel, vanilla custard, buttered wholewheat toast, and roasted coffee beans Joshua and Jason interviewed Scott & Becky Harris from Catoctin Creek distillery on their podcast One Nation Under Whisky a number of times. While Single Cask Nation has been releasing rye whiskies from MGP, Catoctin Creek, and Backwoods (to name a few), this is the first ever rye whisky bottled from the Wilderness Trail distillery and, spoiler alert, it's not only profoundly delicious, Joshua said this rye is in the running for his top SCN bottlings of 2024 (and we all know he tends to lean into single malts more than any other type of whisky so that's really saying something! Launching on Thursday, June 6th, 2024 at 12pm EDT and bottled at 56.35% ABV, this single cask of Wilderness Trail Rye yielded just 212 bottles and will sell for only $60 on singlecasknation.com -- notes are as follows: Color: Fresh motor oil Nose: Fragrant opening with fennel fronds, subtle rosewater and a certain grassiness, light brown sugar and vanilla icing follow with slowly building rye bread and brown butter notes – candied fennel seeds and peppercorns appear on subsequent sniffs Palate: Oily and herbaceous to begin but there’s so much more beyond that note: rye spice, orange bitters, orange blossom honey, butterscotch, pronounced Turkish Delight, toasted slivered almonds with a texture that becomes waxy as it transitions towards the finish Finish: Moderate with chocolate covered orange peels, candied ginger, and a lingering earthiness (like a walk through the woods in springtime) Notes on the label: A fragrant rye that is worth returning to again and again. Yes, it’s herbaceous and spicy but it’s also sweet and floral with a lingering earthiness. Single Cask Nation has been releasing named bourbons, ryes, and light whiskies from the MGP Distillery (previously known LDI and Seagrams) since 2014. This is SCN's first Wheated bourbon from the distillery and, boy, is it a belter! Launching on Thursday, June 6th, 2024 at 12pm EDT and bottled at 55.45% ABV, this single cask of MGP Wheated Bourbon yielded just 141 bottles and will sell for only $80 on singlecasknation.com -- notes are as follows: Color: Maple Syrup Nose: Leads with scorched wood followed by salted, boiled peanuts tossed with red pepper flakes (it’s a mood), and chocolate ganache then a grain sweetness towards the back with soft and subtle cotton candy notes around the edges Palate: A rollercoaster that has come free from the tracks: opens with pronounced smoky cask char with natural cherry cordial, spun sugar, funnel cake, buckwheat honey, Alpha-bits™ cereal, horse feedbag (warm oats with a touch of molasses) Finish: Long and lasting with pleasant building spice, spent charcoal, and a generous sweetness Notes on the label: An atypical bourbon from this well regarded producer. Pronounced smoky cask char is balanced by cherries, buckwheat honey, and funnel cake. Holy moly if that's not the dream of a whisky lover's lifetime we're not sure what is!   Add to this, Joshua and Jason detail the launch of Free Shipping at singlecasknation.com as well as re-share the details of their 6 new American whiskies launching June 6th, 2024.   There's so much to share but, seeing as this is a podcast, best to listen than to read, no?   ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. The 3yo rye spent all its years in a re-charred French Oak Shiraz cask baking in the hot Yackandandah Australian heat. The 4yo that was just release is comprised of 2 casks (both 3yo ryes from ex-re-charred American Oak) that were married together for another year in the re-charred French Oak Shiraz cask that held the original SCN Backwoods bottling. How's that for a mind bender?! If you wish to purchase a bottle (assuming stock still remains) you can follow this link: https://bit.ly/3W1MIGO Tasting notes on the new 4yo are as follows: Color: Burnt orange Nose: Balsa wood, dehydrated apple rings, and a freshly opened pack of unfiltered cigarettes but with rich sweetness in the form of chocolate covered Shredded Wheat and hints of Cherry Lips and Strawberry Starburst Palate: Wonderful mouthcoating texture with abundant notes: walnut skins, chocolate dipped cherries dusted in cocoa powder, fresh wood shavings, vibrant rye spice, Biscoff cookies, and Whoppers – quite earthy and a touch herbaceous Finish: Moderate to long with lingering rye spice, more wood shavings, drying cocoa, black licorice and then, on the very end, a bright citrus flourish/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="8" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="88"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:dqXJPrcFvKY/id> yt:videoId>dqXJPrcFvKY/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCijcu2cttiEagXj_Ahr7wYg/yt:channelId> title>Season 8 Ep 5 -- Answers to recent questions and SCN updates!/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqXJPrcFvKY"/> author> name>Single Cask Nation/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCijcu2cttiEagXj_Ahr7wYg/uri> /author> published>2024-04-17T06:30:12+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-29T19:18:36+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Season 8 Ep 5 -- Answers to recent questions and SCN updates!/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/dqXJPrcFvKY?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i1.ytimg.com/vi/dqXJPrcFvKY/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Source: https://www.podbean.com/eau/pb-bbhau-15e2f41 Since Artisanal Spirits Company (ASC) acquired Single Cask Nation (SCN) a number of questions have come up from around the whisky world. 4:: Single Cask Nation Balcones Golden Promise 4yo June 2024 Release

ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ Joshua and Jason take you through the tasting notes (also listed below) on the latest Single Cask Nation Balcones 4yo "Golden Promise" American Single Malt whisky, part of their June 6, 2024 online releases. 5:: Single Cask Nation Catoctin Creek Rye 3yo Barleywine Cask Matured June 2024 Release

01.01.1970 ˇ 01:00:00 ˇˇˇ 29.05.2024 ˇ 17:18:11 ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ
ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ Joshua and Jason take you through the tasting notes (also listed below) on the latest Single Cask Nation Catoctin Creek rye whisky from a Barleywine cask, part of their June 6, 2024 online releases. You can listen here (Season 2, Ep 12): https://spoti.fi/3Ko5y4a You can also listen here (Season 3, Ep 16): https://bit.ly/3R7wbOl You can also listen here (Season 5, Ep 13): https://spoti.fi/4ebwfqq

6:: Single Cask Nation Wilderness Trail Rye 4yo June 2024 Release

ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ Joshua and Jason take you through the tasting notes (also listed below) on the latest Single Cask Nation Wilderness Trail 4yo rye whisky, part of their June 6, 2024 online releases. Springtime in a glass

7:: Single Cask Nation Black Button Bourbon 7yo June 2024 Release

01.01.1970 ˇ 01:00:00 ˇˇˇ 29.05.2024 ˇ 11:44:13 ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ
ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ Joshua and Jason take you through the tasting notes (also listed below) on the latest Single Cask Nation Black Button 7yo Bourbon, part of their June 6, 2024 online releases. This is Single Cask Nation's 2nd release from Rochester NY's Black Button distillery. This release highlights some of the more weighty and earthy qualities in bourbon coming from this distillery. Launching on Thursday, June 6th, 2024 at 12pm EDT and bottled at 51.1% ABV, this single cask of MGP Wheated Bourbon yielded just 124 bottles and will sell for only $90 on singlecasknation.com -- notes are as follows: Color: Antique brass Nose: Leads with gentle wood in the form of Airfix glue, green sticks, used books in a store heated by the early morning sun (maybe a soft rain has begun falling outside) then a sweetness slowly rises in the form of warm oatmeal topped with freshly sliced apples and pears, creamed corn, homemade granola, and then hints of delicate herbed butter Palate: Opens with dark cherries wrapped in dark chocolate with whispers of coconut before the gentle oak returns with a few more green sticks and scorched nutmeg before it’s on to warm apple strudel, molasses, peanut brittle, and a delicate herbaceousness Finish: Moderate length with bran flakes, roasted corn, cinnamon oatmeal, and apple pie Joshua and Jason interviewed Jason Barrett, President and Master Distiller of Black Button on Season 6 Episode 11 of their podcast One Nation Under Whisky. 8:: Single Cask Nation MGP Wheated Bourbon 7yo June 2024 Release

01.01.1970 ˇ 01:00:00 ˇˇˇ 29.05.2024 ˇ 11:35:42 ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ
ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ Joshua and Jason take you through the tasting notes (also listed below) on the latest Single Cask Nation MGP 7yo Wheated Bourbon, part of their June 6, 2024 online releases. The spice builds but never overwhelms and the spent charcoal compliments the generous sweetness Joshua and Jason interviewed Ian Stirsman, Master Distiller of MGP of Indiana on Season 8 Episode 8 of their podcast One Nation Under Whisky. 14:: Single Cask Nation Backwoods Rye 3yo vs 4yo Side by Side tasting

01.01.1970 ˇ 01:00:00 ˇˇˇ 18.04.2024 ˇ 23:29:43 ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ
ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ ˇˇˇ A number of Nation members have asked how the new SCN Backwoods 4yo (released April 18, 2024) compares to the SCN Backwoods 3yo (released in March 2022). If you wish to purchase a bottle (assuming stock still remains) you can follow this link: https://bit.ly/3W1MIGO Tasting notes on the new 4yo are as follows: Color: Burnt orange Nose: Balsa wood, dehydrated apple rings, and a freshly opened pack of unfiltered cigarettes but with rich sweetness in the form of chocolate covered Shredded Wheat and hints of Cherry Lips and Strawberry Starburst Palate: Wonderful mouthcoating texture with abundant notes: walnut skins, chocolate dipped cherries dusted in cocoa powder, fresh wood shavings, vibrant rye spice, Biscoff cookies, and Whoppers – quite earthy and a touch herbaceous Finish: Moderate to long with lingering rye spice, more wood shavings, drying cocoa, black licorice and then, on the very end, a bright citrus flourish

Look for cotton candy around the edges of the swirled glass and maybe even a hint of chocolate covered toffee. Palate: Rich and unctuous with abundant oak and warm leather armchairs, mellow cinnamon spice balances out the brown sugar sweetness, fruitiness takes the form of golden raisins, bruised pineapple, and Casaba melon before developing the earthiness of used light roast coffee grounds. Finish: Long and lasting with lingering cinnamon, brown sugar, and Manuka honey Joshua and Jason interviewed Richard Seale of Foursquare on Season 4 Episode 15 of their podcast One Nation Under Whisky. Onion flavored corn snacks (Funyuns), balsamic reduction, lemon zest on brisket lead the second wave with a delicate hint of spent match and chipotle peppers providing the smoky notes this time around. Palate: Rich and unctuous on entry with dark chocolate covered raisins and fresh pipe tobacco notes before ripe Honeydew melon and smoked red fruits take charge of the experience. Subsequent sips reveal linseed oil treated leather and HoneyNut Cheerios. Finish: Decent length with a pleasing drying quality. Notes of black tea, cracked peppercorns, Dutch process cocoa powder, and lingering smoked red fruits close out the experience.

Finish: Long, funky, and earthy with heavy fruits. Maybe some tinned fruit cocktail, too. Perhaps this could’ve softened Pharaoh’s heart? Rather, that are a "Society" (and quite easily the largest whisky society on the planet) that bottles whisky specifically for their Society members.
