Joshua and Jason take you through the tasting notes (also listed below) on the latest Single Cask Nation Wilderness Trail 4yo rye whisky, part of their June 6, 2024 online releases.
While Single Cask Nation has been releasing rye whiskies from MGP, Catoctin Creek, and Backwoods (to name a few), this is the first ever rye whisky bottled from the Wilderness Trail distillery and, spoiler alert, it's not only profoundly delicious, Joshua said this rye is in the running for his top SCN bottlings of 2024 (and we all know he tends to lean into single malts more than any other type of whisky so that's really saying something!
Launching on Thursday, June 6th, 2024 at 12pm EDT and bottled at 56.35% ABV, this single cask of Wilderness Trail Rye yielded just 212 bottles and will sell for only $60 on singlecasknation.com -- notes are as follows:
Color: Fresh motor oil
Nose: Fragrant opening with fennel fronds, subtle rosewater and a certain grassiness, light brown sugar and vanilla icing follow with slowly building rye bread and brown butter notes – candied fennel seeds and peppercorns appear on subsequent sniffs
Palate: Oily and herbaceous to begin but there’s so much more beyond that note: rye spice, orange bitters, orange blossom honey, butterscotch, pronounced Turkish Delight, toasted slivered almonds with a texture that becomes waxy as it transitions towards the finish
Finish: Moderate with chocolate covered orange peels, candied ginger, and a lingering earthiness (like a walk through the woods in springtime)
Notes on the label: A fragrant rye that is worth returning to again and again. Yes, it’s herbaceous and spicy but it’s also sweet and floral with a lingering earthiness. Springtime in a glass
