I was organist at a Catholic church in Hollywood at the time and happily played John Williams' "Star Wars (Main Title)" as the Organ Postlude at the first opportunity after the premiere. Twenty years later, in 2019, I adapted themes from all Star Wars movie episodes in 'A Star Wars Organ Suite', premiering the piece on The Great Organs of First Congregational Church Los Angeles. Five years later, in 2024, I released a single from the suite, "Duel of the Fates", on Bandcamp, Spotify and other streaming services, celebrating 25 years of 'The Phantom Menace'. During a practice session on a one-manual Italian Organ in the Maison du Prieur (Prior's House) I was playing around with the windows open, hearing some birds sing. As so often with organists an improvisation turned into a piece that I could and wanted to remember . . .Β  Two decades later I revisited the piece at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, eventually released four versions as a single and published a score. So, every year I enjoy working this hypnotic piece back up. The last page provides an anatomic challenge that I like to address with playing aids available on the organ console. I had been experimenting with the console's transposer and it was still turned up a half step, so on March 29 of 2024 Widor's Toccata in F was in F#. I was prepping on a Friday afternoon, before the organ techs at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, Scott Clowes and Roger Hardesty, had closed up the organ console after a day of servicing the instrument. So, this video affords a rare look at the console's innards. Filmed by Scott Clowes on an iPhone 7+. Thanks! πŸ™ ~ A note from Christoph: "Repentir" is French for "repentance", and 'repenting' is something we do during Lent which is why I'm posting this piece today. To me, it means taking stock, reviewing the past, acknowledging what went well and what didn't go so well, acknowledge it, take responsibility, send and/or ask for light where it needs to go (transgressors, including ourselves) and setting the intention to make the necessary adjustments for betterment. So, to me it's really a good thing, not a bummer, and I appreciate this time of introspection. Of course, there are low moments for all of us, but I strongly believe in 'keep showing up'. I had heard it on the radio while I was in elementary school in Germany, but didn't know who and what it was. My best friend's dad was from the U.S., so I figured he ought to know and he did after I hummed the melody to him. (This was in the mid-70s, so I needed someone who was around when Elvis sang this in the movie 'Blue Hawaii' in 1961.) Many other Elvis favorites followed, and then The Beatles, Supertramp, ELO, Billy Joel, The Alan Parsons Project . . . Britney Spears. I played this on February 11 during the weekly Prelude-Concert on The Great Organs of First Church L.A., in anticipation of Valentine's Day. It's the type of fugue my first organ teacher Professor Hermann Schaeffer at Christuskirche Mannheim, Germany, called Champagner-Fuge – 'champagne fugue'. (Another example would be the middle movement in Buxtehude's "Prelude, Fugue and Chaconne in C".) I now have three renditions of BWV 542/2 on YouTube (the other two were recorded on the Mega-Organ at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles). A note from Christoph: This 7th Century Latin hymn is usually sung during Advent. I reprogrammed it for our Epiphany season because Epiphany is about that one star. For this rendition I hooked up a Roland Integra 7 to The Great Organs of First Church. I've liked synthesizers - analog and digital - ever since my dear parents gave me a Korg MS-20 as a present for confirmation. (That's one of those OG machines with lots of knobs and quarter inch patch chords.) So, I was hooked back then, and it makes perfect sense to me to combine the original synthesizer, the pipe organ, with modern day synthesizers and I'll explore this combination more moving forward. Special thanks to Nelson Dodge and everyone at Church Keyboard Center. Also many thanks to our valiant organ tech team at FCCLA, Scott Clowes and Roger Hardesty, who've been working on the MIDI implementation on the Chancel console. And many celebrate Epiphany, commemorating the visit of the Magi. So, that's my last chance to post "Silent Night" this year, right? And, according to Larry David, tomorrow is the last day I should say "Happy New Year" (although I make no such commitment). Candle Lighting merging into "Silent Night" is a tradition at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. I play an atmospheric improvisation on the organ while attendees light their candles. I usually allude to the beautiful DIVINUM MYSTERIUM chant instrumentally. When most of the candles are lit, I merge into "Silent Night". This is always very moving to me and reminds me of childhood Christmas celebrations in my home country of Germany where the song is called "Stille Nacht". My favorite part is actually when I drop out and everybody sings a cappella. (I did my part at that point :) Thank you Vocal Ensemble Laude, Cathedral Choir, Ministers and Staff and the good people of First Congregational Church of Los Angeles for the beautiful singing. I was organist at a Catholic church in Hollywood at the time and happily played John Williams' "Star Wars (Main Title)" as the Organ Postlude at the first opportunity after the premiere. During a practice session on a one-manual Italian Organ in the Maison du Prieur (Prior's House) I was playing around with the windows open, hearing some birds sing. (Another example would be the middle movement in Buxtehude's "Prelude, Fugue and Chaconne in C".) A note from Christoph: This 7th Century Latin hymn is usually sung during Advent. Bach's book of preludes and fugues in all 24 keys, major and minor, dates from 1722 making it a mere 301 years old at the time of this posting (New Year's Eve 2023). This live performance is from my first concert as organist-in-residence at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, a bit more than ten years ago, on October 18, 2013. The concert was part of the Los Angeles Bach Festival. I was invited to perform by then-FCCLA-MD Jonathan Talberg and collaborated with Tim Anderson and his Nu-Salt Laser team. I hadn't known it before, so I checked out a video of the original sung by Peter Auty. 23:: BACH Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme BWV 645 – Organ & Laser – Christoph Bull live @ FCCLA

··· ··· ··· ··· SUBSCRIBE TO THIS CHANNEL: https://www.youtube.com/orgue99?sub_confirmation=1 Please subscribe, like, comment, share. ~ A note from Christoph: I like Bach's "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" (literally translated: "Wake up, the voice calls us") kicking off the Advent Season. This is from my first concert as organist-in-residence at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles a mere ten+ years ago on October 18, 2013. I performed the piece during a concert that featured Choir, Instrumentalists and Laser as part of that year's Bach Festival. I had lots of fun collaborating with Tim Anderson and his Nu-Salt Laser team on this and other occasions. BWV 645 is the first Chorale in Bach's set of six known as the Schübler Chorales. They were published towards the end of his life and are named after the publisher, Johann Georg Schübler. Bach is part of a long tradition of composers transcribing works written for other instruments and/or singers for organ. His organ and harpsichord transcriptions include works by Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar, Antonio Vivaldi and various other Italian composers. In the case of this piece, Bach transcribed a movement from one of his own cantatas, namely the fourth movement, "Zion hört die Wächter singen" ("Zion hears the watchmen sing"), from BWV 140 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme' (known as 'Sleepers, Wake!'). In the cantata, the Chorale melody is sung by the Tenors, in the organ transcription it is played by the left hand. The right hand takes the Violins' catchy unison line and the Pedal represents the Basso Continuo. I've played this piece at various tempos. For this concert I chose a laid back approach, like waking up somebody gently from a deep sleep. On other occasions I give people a chipper "Hey, wake up quickly!" :) We didn't have the same audio recording capacities back then that we have now, so the camera audio has to suffice for this one. My first concert in this position occurred on October 18, 2013 (Bach Festival) and I played my first pre-service Prelude Concert on October 20, 2013. The fact that I started at FCCLA in '13 is one of the reasons I consider '13' a lucky number. Two more are: I-Chin's and my son Maximilian Adrian Sebastian was born the same year, 2013, and the late great German football striker Gerd Müller wore the number 13 on his jersey when playing for the national team in 1970 and 1974 (when they won the World Cup). So, when I discovered that my Prelude Concert in this video started with Piston #13 (a combination of stops that I pre-programmed) I felt compelled to share that fact with the people in attendance :) One of my missions at FCCLA is that The Great Organs of First Church will be played, maintained and upgraded into perpetuity. A few days earlier, our Choral Director Dr. David Harris had stopped me in the hallway to let me know that it was the 50th Anniversary of Pink Floyd's legendary album The Dark Side Of The Moon on March 1, 2023. Wow, 50 years! And wouldn't it be nice to celebrate this anniversary on the pipe organ. I had done the final track from the album, "Eclipse", before... during my first 'organica' series in 1999. So, that became the obvious choice. (The fact that we were growing towards a particularly beautiful new moon helped :) I felt I needed a soft, meditative Intro in order to make the "Eclipse" Intro entrance more effective. The Gregorian Chant "Sanctus" from Missa Orbis factor came to mind. So, I got to do two favorite things: improvising on Gregorian Chant and on Pink Floyd. King George I had requested this concert music from the composer for a boat ride. He and his aristocratic entourage boarded one barge while about fifty musicians performed Händel's music on another during the trip between Whitehall Palace and Chelsea. Water Music was a big success with the king, his guests and many Londoners who came to the river to hear it too. Thirty-two years later, in 1749, the king's son, George II, would commission Händel to write the Music for the Royal Fireworks. ~ FCCLA Organist-in-Residence: Christoph Bull FCCLA AV Team: Kaspar Abbo, Danny Hesse, Marc Doten, David Saldaña If you're so inclined, please like, comment, subscribe. ~ FCCLA In-person and Online Concerts, Services and Events: https://www.fccla.org/visit https://www.fccla.org/live FCCLA YouTube Channel with Archive of Weekly Organ Prelude Concerts and Inclusive Services with Choral and Organ Music: https://www.youtube.com/c/firstchurchla FCCLA Donation Opportunities: https://www.fccla.org/giving Select 'Contributions - Organ' in pull-down menu, if you want to support The Great Organs. Thankfully, the practice of castrating prepubescent boys in order to preserve their pristine voices has been discontinued and in modern performances the piece is sung by a countertenor, contralto or mezzo-soprano. It can also be sung by a tenor or high baritone an octave below. It was written in the key of F Major (the dominant to the Bb of this organ version) and the original instrumentation was Oboe, Strings and Continuo. He also used the musical material for the middle movement, a Largo in Ab Major, of his fifth Keyboard Concerto, BWV 1056. The piece may have been a 'spin-off' of the opening Andante from Flute Concerto in G major (TWV 51:G2) by Bach's friend Georg Philipp Telemann. This organ performance of Bach's piece was recorded on Friday, June 4, 2021, during the first run-through of the weekly Organ Prelude Concert at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles to take place two days later. I first played the original piece once through and then added a paraphrased and ornamented repeat from 2:21 on. I'm dedicating this video to the great Frederick Swann (July 30, 1931 – November 13, 2022). Fred was organist at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles from 1998 and 2001 and is the church's Organist Emeritus. He was the first person to invite me to concertize there in 1999. He also invited me to perform at UCLA's Royce Hall during the 2004 National Convention of the American Guild of Organist in Los Angeles for which he was program chair. In subsequent years, he became a much loved and generous mentor and supporter. I 'inherited' Fred's last student at University of Redlands, Dr. Philip Hoch, when Philip joined the DMA program at UCLA a few years ago and I cherish this connection. On February 12, 2017, Frederick Swann joined David Goode, Jaebon Hwang and myself in performing at a major event entitled 'Organ Spectacular', celebrating the 150th anniversary of First Congregational Church of Los Angeles and uniting several living FCCLA organists, which was enthusiastically celebrated by a beyond-capacity crowd. The pictures of Fred at the end of this video are from that treasured day. I first learned playing the pipe organ at that same church, studying with then-Kantor Hermann Schaeffer. Like myself, Kantor Michel has a predilection for mixing pipes with Jazz. This performance of his Chorale Prelude IN DIR IST FREUDE (Afro-Cuban) is preceded by a rendition of the Chorale it is based on. Johannes Michel was born on October 1, 1962, which means it's time to say: Happy 60th birthday, Johannes Michel!" It became famous as the theme for the PBS television program Masterpiece Theatre and is also popular in weddings. A classical Rondeau (French) or Rondo (English) is a form in a which a principal theme (like a Refrain) is alternated with one or more contrasting themes. 45:: Church Service Organ Prelude turns into "God Save The Queen"

I had programmed Johann Georg Albrechtsberger's Praeludium XI in F, concluding with an Improvisation on the piece, as I often do. When Queen Elizabeth passed on the Thursday before that Sunday, I felt compelled to honor her by adding "God Save The Queen" in a very somber way at the end of the Prelude. When practicing the Albrechtsberger piece, I realized I could incorporate the tune in the Improvisation. That meant it wouldn't be as somber, although I did decrescendo and slow down into the quoted music. I was fine with the 'happy' context of the Albrechtsberger performance and improvisation because I looked at it as accompanying the ascent of the soul to heaven with a joyful reception there. The timing of this occurring three days after death added to that perception. This tribute had nothing to do with my feelings about the monarchy which is something people obviously have different opinions about. As a fervent supporter of democracy I have my skepticisms, but it's really the business and decision of the Commonwealth. Rather, I felt some genuine sorrow about the passing of a person, and an appreciation for that person, who had 'always been there' throughout my life and who I can't help but admire for her consistency, steadiness and humour. Working until two days before her death at age 96, obviously speaks volumes. Blessed be her soul." ~ FCCLA In-person and Online Concerts, Services and Events: https://www.fccla.org/visit https://www.fccla.org/live FCCLA YouTube Channel with Archive of Weekly Organ Prelude Concerts and Inclusive Services with Choral and Organ Music: https://www.youtube.com/c/firstchurchla FCCLA Donation Opportunities: https://www.fccla.org/giving Select 'Contributions - Organ' in pull-down menu, if you want to support The Great Organs. 47:: Alexander Courage - Star Trek TOS Theme - Where No One Has Gone Before - Christoph Bull, Pipe Organ

The theme's original title is "Where No Man Has Gone Before". I slightly updated this to "Where No One Has Gone Before" as women went to space then and are going now. As a matter of fact, the first pilot of the series, 'The Cage', featured a character named Number One, a female First Officer played by Majel Barrett who later played Nurse Christine Chapel in the series and married its creator, Gene Roddenberry. Growing up in Germany, family members, friends and I loved watching re-runs of 'Raumschiff Enterprise' as 'Star Trek' was called there. We re-enacted the adventures of Kirk, Spock, Pille (Dr. McCoy/Bones' nickname in the German dubs), Uhura, Scotty, Sulu and Chekov in the playground of our elementary school. Since the organ console of The Great Organs of First Church is very much like the command center of a spaceship, it made perfect sense to adapt this theme for pipe organ. Thank you, FCCLA AV Team Captain David Saldaña, for the beautiful live (!) video overlays. The digital reflections of the church's rose window on the right side of the bottom keyboard from 4:27 to 5:09 very much remind me of the instrument buttons on the Bridge of the Starship Enterprise. And thank you, Kaspar Abbo, for being such a faithful and fun partner in the sanctuary while filling the corona vault between March 2020 and September 2021. This rendition is an unedited performance from the last pre-service run-through before our weekly half-hour Prelude Concert at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles on May 9 of 2021. Please excuse a brief digital artifact at 5:30. Between the organist being able to send signals to 18,000+ pipes via the organ console and between me scheduling a live premiere of this video in places ranging from Mannheim, Germany, to Los Angeles, California, and many other spaces in the universe and multiverse via internet stream, I find it quite amazing how much stuff actually works :)" ~ FCCLA YouTube Channel with Archive of Weekly Organ Prelude Concerts and Inclusive Services with Choral and Organ Music: https://www.youtube.com/c/firstchurchla FCCLA In-person and Online Concerts and Events: https://www.fccla.org/visit https://www.fccla.org/live FCCLA Donation Opportunities: https://www.fccla.org/giving Select 'Contributions - Organ' in pull-down menu, if you want to support The Great Organs.
