Max is a pretty cool dude and a master of the “Western folk” tradition - his songs are beautiful stories and feel timeless. When he covers a tune, like his version of “Tall Buildings”, he has this ability to lock into the “heart” of a song like very few can. We’re big fans here and it’s a joy to have him back in the rotation with “Good Friend”.

Anthony Simpkinsns jumped in the tour van with Nolan for a leg of shows in Tennessee/Georgia opening for Red Clay Strays recently. They recorded this in the van one day, just jamming out and having fun on the way to Knoxville! Nolan is a great guy with a killer voice and a humble story - we’re pumped he was able to quit his mailman job to focus on a life in music.
“This song comes from a place of feeling guilty for your emotions, and coming to terms with who you are,” says Nolan.

media:description>I've known about Nolan Taylor a long time now. We actually met once, before Jon Grace's much celebrated Laurel Cove festival in Bell County, Kentucky. Nolan was probably still a mailman back then, and our mutual friend Aaron Cordell (amazing drummer and former roommate of Hayden Karchmer lol) brought him along for a hike. We all talked music and played tunes and had a good ole time.
Sometime after that, Nolan entered the "Gems in the Rough" contest we were holding. He produced easily one of the best recordings ever for it, which subsequently went hella viral, his song "500 Days" (https://youtu.be/AX52m6cU2M8?si=toalb9xpRJU-hOjo). Unfortunately, he didn't follow the rules (no cuts in the video, so we know you made it for the contest lol), and we had to disqualify his entry. Luckily that didn't stop him from getting a record deal with Atlantic, and gaining thousands of fans.
I jumped in the tour van with him for a leg of shows in Tennessee/Georgia recently. We recorded this in the van one day, just jamming out and having fun on the way to Knoxville. Nolan is seriously salt of the earth, a normal guy with a killer voice and a humble story. I can't stand rock stars, and despite sounding like one Nolan is not that guy.

We caught up with Cole Chaney in Nashville where he was opening for Charles Wesley Godwin in a legendary room, the Ryman Auditorium. Cole is the real deal. Just a humble dude who plays great music, and we couldn't be happier to see him playing the most esteemed stage in country music. This recording was done in two back-to-back sold-out nights on that mystical stage, and the audio is from night one.
If you don’t know much about The Ryman, it’s worth going down the rabbit hole! Colloquially known as the “Mother Church of Country Music”, it was built as a church in 1892 by a sea captain, became the home of the Grand Ole Opry for over 30 years, and is heralded as the birthplace of bluegrass. Not a bad spot for a live recording!

We did some clay shooting, watched grandad mill a bunch of lumber, grandma cooked dinner and he generally just gave me a window into his life. From what i've learned, Cole is the real deal. Just a humble dude who plays great music, and I couldn't be happier to see him playing the most esteemed stage in country music, The Ryman Auditorium. He sings songs about normal life, down to earth wisdom and family ties. Nothing pretentious, just three chords, the truth and some damn good instrumentation. I think me and Cole will definitely meet again. He has the same manager as Lost Dog street band, Jesse. We also connect on our unironic love of butt rock from the early 2000s/late 90s. Bring that stuff back, for us!

The full session showcases two songs; this is the second one, “Sunday". It was filmed in Ireland by Anthony Simpkins and Luke Brabazon during that last international Gems trip to the lovely Emerald Isle.
The popularity of the last clip goes to show that people are truly hungry for powerful and timeless human expression. We can all connect with voices, it’s the instrument we’re all born with! True, we don’t all sound as beautiful as Branwen, Anna, and Zoe, but we all certainly recognize the greatness and do our best to sing along.

When was the last time you listened to great tunes, A cappella? "Sunday" & "Red Robin" feature three human voices, that’s it. What more do you need, honestly?
There’s a ton of power in these delicate harmonies. There's a ton of power in the directness and depth of what the human voice is capable of emotionally conveying. While this style of music is as ancient and timeless as it gets, it still feels like a breath of fresh air. Lean into this one, it's worth it.

Anthony, me, went to Ireland and heard through the grapevine about this incredible three piece harmony group, Rufous Nightjar. They really knocked my socks off with the vocal control, the timing and precision. I have enough trouble singing random harmonies in the shower, so to hear them flawlessly blast through entire songs together really inspired me. Accapella groups like this are seriously lacking in America. Contemporary groups actually making a go at just using the human voice as an instrument are largely vanished from the scene. Still out there of course, but generally relegated to some corner of obscure nerdom like a barbershop quartet. In a world where voices can be "fixed in post" with the push of an autotune button, its still incredibly impressive to hear people using their natural voices to record stuff like this. Real human interaction, three people doing it the natural way, collaborating and creating in the moment.

Willi's songs are among the most evocative and extraordinary in the realm of folk music. He crafts immersive worlds with his lyrics like no other artist - I'm convinced that even if Willi couldn't play a single instrument, he'd still be churning out plays, novels, and screenplays instead of songs. Fortunately for us, he's a pretty darn good singer who can work wonders with just about anything you put in his hands.
On this particular field recording, Willi mentions it was inspired by “kind of a collection of a bunch of crazy stuff a bunch of good ‘ol boys have said to me over the times and some crazy stuff I added myself”
These days, Willi's always on the move! His live gigs are hitting home with folks from every corner, and he triumphantly lives up to the notion that "all the world’s a stage." Do yourself and your soul the incredible favor of catching one of his shows - he's everywhere.

2:: Casper Allen, howling at the moon under a bridge in NOLA! "Mosquito Ditch" is as real as it gets 💎📼

This one is from a few years back - Anthony Simpkins went down to the 9th ward of New Orleans and met all sorts of characters, including our boy Casper Allen! They captured this song under a sketchy bridge in the middle of the night and shot it entirely on miniDV film using a Sony Handycam from the late 90s.
The song isn't your typical hokey acoustic tropes - Casper weaves a story as contemporary & urban as it is classical blues. A St. James Infirmary for the streets of the 21st century, ripe with codeine-laced drinks, prostitutes, busy corner stores, and fast lane life. Max is a pretty cool dude and a master of the “Western folk” tradition - his songs are beautiful stories and feel timeless. When he covers a tune, like his version of “Tall Buildings”, he has this ability to lock into the “heart” of a song like very few can. Max, turns out, is the unofficial mayor and prodigal son of Taos, New Mexico. The guy knows how to tug your heartstrings; his performance of "Joe" and the John Hartford cover "Tall Buildings" are some of the most popular recordings we've made. He showed Anthony all around Taos landmarks like the old courthouse in the center of town. Seriously, this guy had keys to the whole city. He'd see old friends and acquaintances everywhere they went, people he went to kindergarten with, his parents friends, all types.
Goes to show that the man is not far off from the music - warm, welcoming, and comforting. Max has some tour dates on the calendar and is also coming out with a new single pretty soon so check out where he’s heading and support him however you can.

Anthony Simpkinsns jumped in the tour van with Nolan for a leg of shows in Tennessee/Georgia opening for Red Clay Strays recently. They recorded this in the van one day, just jamming out and having fun on the way to Knoxville! Nolan is a great guy with a killer voice and a humble story - we’re pumped he was able to quit his mailman job to focus on a life in music.
“This song comes from a place of feeling guilty for your emotions, and coming to terms with who you are,” says Nolan.

9:: Nolan Taylor, "Hold Me," ft. Clarke Sexton // GemsOnVHS™
01.01.1970 01:00:00 29.03.2024 16:56:15 I've known about Nolan Taylor a long time now. We actually met once, before Jon Grace's much celebrated Laurel Cove festival in Bell County, Kentucky. Nolan was probably still a mailman back then, and our mutual friend Aaron Cordell (amazing drummer and former roommate of Hayden Karchmer lol) brought him along for a hike. We all talked music and played tunes and had a good ole time.
Sometime after that, Nolan entered the "Gems in the Rough" contest we were holding. He produced easily one of the best recordings ever for it, which subsequently went hella viral, his song "500 Days" (https://youtu.be/AX52m6cU2M8?si=toalb9xpRJU-hOjo). Unfortunately, he didn't follow the rules (no cuts in the video, so we know you made it for the contest lol), and we had to disqualify his entry. Luckily that didn't stop him from getting a record deal with Atlantic, and gaining thousands of fans.

10:: 🤯 An epic night at the most sacred of stages, The Ryman. Cole Chaney is the real deal folks.
01.01.1970 01:00:00 21.03.2024 19:59:42 Cole Chaney is the real deal salt of the earth fella, so when I heard he was playing the most sacred of stages, Ryman Auditorium, opening for Charles Wesley Godwin, we wanted to come check it out. He was gracious enough to let me point a camera at him backstage, and on stage for that matter.
It was a pretty epic night, two nights back to back sold out and screamin' for more. Y'all who were there really showed up. Thanks to Jesse, his manager, who also manages Lost Dog Street Band!

We caught up with Cole Chaney in Nashville where he was opening for Charles Wesley Godwin in a legendary room, the Ryman Auditorium. Cole is the real deal. Just a humble dude who plays great music, and we couldn't be happier to see him playing the most esteemed stage in country music. This recording was done in two back-to-back sold-out nights on that mystical stage, and the audio is from night one.
If you don’t know much about The Ryman, it’s worth going down the rabbit hole! Colloquially known as the “Mother Church of Country Music”, it was built as a church in 1892 by a sea captain, became the home of the Grand Ole Opry for over 30 years, and is heralded as the birthplace of bluegrass. Not a bad spot for a live recording!

01.01.1970 01:00:00 15.03.2024 17:37:48 I've hung out with Kentucky songwriter Cole Chaney a couple times now. The first time, I drove up there to his grandparent's house where he played some songs. We did some clay shooting, watched grandad mill a bunch of lumber, grandma cooked dinner and he generally just gave me a window into his life. From what i've learned, Cole is the real deal. Just a humble dude who plays great music, and I couldn't be happier to see him playing the most esteemed stage in country music, The Ryman Auditorium. This recording was done in two back to back sold out nights on that mystical stage, and the audio is from night one.
He sings songs about normal life, down to earth wisdom and family ties. Nothing pretentious, just three chords, the truth and some damn good instrumentation. I think me and Cole will definitely meet again. He has the same manager as Lost Dog street band, Jesse. We also connect on our unironic love of butt rock from the early 2000s/late 90s. Bring that stuff back, for us!

The full session showcases two songs; this is the second one, “Sunday". It was filmed in Ireland by Anthony Simpkins and Luke Brabazon during that last international Gems trip to the lovely Emerald Isle.
The popularity of the last clip goes to show that people are truly hungry for powerful and timeless human expression. We can all connect with voices, it’s the instrument we’re all born with! True, we don’t all sound as beautiful as Branwen, Anna, and Zoe, but we all certainly recognize the greatness and do our best to sing along.

There’s a ton of power in these delicate harmonies. There's a ton of power in the directness and depth of what the human voice is capable of emotionally conveying. While this style of music is as ancient and timeless as it gets, it still feels like a breath of fresh air. Lean into this one, it's worth it.

15:: Rufous Nightjar, "Sunday," & "Red Robin," // GemsOnVHS™
01.01.1970 01:00:00 08.03.2024 17:15:11 A special double feature today from Ireland here for y'all. Anthony, me, went to Ireland and heard through the grapevine about this incredible three piece harmony group, Rufous Nightjar. They really knocked my socks off with the vocal control, the timing and precision. I have enough trouble singing random harmonies in the shower, so to hear them flawlessly blast through entire songs together really inspired me. Accapella groups like this are seriously lacking in America. Contemporary groups actually making a go at just using the human voice as an instrument are largely vanished from the scene. Still out there of course, but generally relegated to some corner of obscure nerdom like a barbershop quartet. In a world where voices can be "fixed in post" with the push of an autotune button, its still incredibly impressive to hear people using their natural voices to record stuff like this. Real human interaction, three people doing it the natural way, collaborating and creating in the moment.
My friend Luke Brabazon, the Irish filmmaker who has been helping me film a few different sessions from Ireland (https://youtu.be/E3ru5vfyqZU?si=tgYteXLWHYq-DvkJ) assisted me on this one. "I wrote this one in a dark time," says Jeremie, "I had just moved into a new apartment building and I heard an angelic voice singing but wasn't sure where it was coming from. I never ended up putting a face to that voice, but hearing their voice come down the hall during the tough times made things a little easier"
I think we all collectively owe that angelic voice a beer in return for the banger of a song it inspired. There's a full-production version of this tune on Jeremie's latest album, "Tears You Hide", which we highly recommend here at Gems. The whole album is stellar and guaranteed to make your foot tap and your heart sing - we're mighty proud of Jeremie and love all the things he's doing. Hard work pays off man, and he's out there doing the thing. Tons of tour dates on the calendar too, go support him out on the road!

17:: Jeremie Albino, "Across the Hall" // GemsOnVHS™
01.01.1970 01:00:00 30.06.2023 18:02:13 There aren't many folks I want to hop in the van with now a days. I spent a lot of time in them, rolling around the country, touring the gas stations of this great nation. Jeremie Albino called though, and when I found out it was him and Benjamin Dakota Rogers van, on a west coast tour with Sierra Ferrell.. well, I jumped in the van. From San Fransisco to Portland, to Boise, Idaho up to Seattle, then all the way into Canada for a Vancouver date. I'd never been to half of them towns, and I had good music to go along every mile of the way.
Knowing us, we had to pull off the side of the road a few times, take in the beauty of the nature surrounding us, and play a tune. Jeremie played this one high up in the Sierras, where all of a sudden visibility dropped to a few feet and snow appeared out of nowhere. It had been damn near 70 degrees just an hour before, so we all had to get out and laugh a bit at our sudden change in weather.
Jeremie's new album is a banger. Watching him open for Sierra, I found myself in awe of his ability to just stand up there and rock an entire crowd by himself. He has so much spirit, such a work ethic. Reminds me of Charley Crockett in that way. Never once did I see him falter, even when our hotel rooms were sold out, or when it was 3am and we still had to move instrument cases down from the third floor of some venue. He is a trooper.

Over the years, we've been fortunate to capture a few field recordings with Jeremie in various locations. From his father's taxi repair shop in Toronto (his home base) to sunny rooftops in Nashville (where Gems is based), and even a spirited duet with the amazing Cat Clyde. We've had some memorable musical moments with this dude and are very proud of him.

He's covering the song "Abilene", which was recorded originally in the 60's by George Hamilton IV. This version was captured in Scotland at the Pianodrome, where Anthony was joined by friends + fellow songwriters Sam Shackleton and Lucia.

"When I was in Scotland, there was a little spot Matt Heckler had told me about. The Pianodrome, it was a called. A venue, a colosseum of used and neglected piano parts, in a warehouse outside Edinburgh. They let us drop by for a visit and a song" says Anthony, "This is an old cover of a song my friend Ezra introduced me to. I always thought it was about Abilene, Texas, which was strange because there's nothing all that nice about that town. Later I found out it was written for some old western movie and was actually about Abilene, Kansas. Go figure. Never been."

Y'all might recognize these folks - a fateful trip up to Kentucky earlier this year found Jason Dea West, Benjamin Tod, Ashley, and Keith (of Resonant Rogues with his partner Sparrow Pants) all together in the same place, our friends at Muhlenberg whiskey facility.
Legends tell of a time when a couple dirty punks with some banged-up instruments used to hop the locomotives from town to town, busking for their wages and sharpening their skills. Things have changed since then, but each of these artists have went on to do great things, and are still making tunes to this day in their own respective bands.
Make sure to check this one out; the last time they played this song together was in 2011! To have them here for us to listen to is a rare and beautiful treat of folk history.

You have them play a grand reunion performance live in the Baird distillery whiskey cask room, of course. Shout out to Baird for letting us crash their retired school turned Kentucky's premier new whiskey making facility. Great people, great whiskey honestly. Yes we tried some of the stuff in the casks.
Also, if you don't know Barefoot Surrender, can you really call yourself a Lost Dog street band fan? Not in my book. Educate yourself on the history folks. The gritty, dirty roots of the thing. I've personally gotten the chance to play and hang with Jordan; he's just as kind and special as he seems. A hardworking songwriter, a great dad, and a great human. It's a winning combination and we're all really proud to see him kicking butt and hitting the road.

Molly has quite a stunning voice - pure, expressive, and sincere. She came to us via Luke Brabazon, an Irish documentary filmmaker that Anthony met on his previous trip out to the Emerald Isle. Luke felt inspired by Molly and her wonderful songs and actually filmed this session for the channel; thanks for turning us on to such a phenomenal songwriter.

01.01.1970 01:00:00 26.05.2023 19:56:52 When I was last in Ireland, I went to a house show on a whim in Dublin. Nothing better than seeing live music in an intimate space, and I often meet kindred musical spirits in such environments. One such person is Luke Brabazon, an Irish documentary filmmaker whom I immediately hit it off with. In his little home on the southside of Dublin city, he was throwing a series of performances, cramming as many friends into his little living room for a night of songs and fun. I loved his work, his spirit and ethos, so after a night of pints we decided to collaborate. From Luke himself;
"A few weeks after I met Anthony, I was invited to the Duncairn Arts centre in Belfast to participate in their creative collective weekend. Once a season, they bring together about twenty of the island's best young folk musicians to create new music together.
Within one of the groups, I heard Molly O'Mahony singing. Her voice is deep and soulful, and she was a quiet but experienced and grounded presence in the circle, thoughtfully giving input to the song that was being created.
We got to chatting, and she reminded me that we'd actually talked on the phone about working together with her band Mongoose a few years ago. I heard someone from Australia recently describing Ireland as being too small to think of as a country on its own - more like a very large community living on an island together. Moments like this make me think this could be very true.
During the Sunday afternoon, we took a few minutes out from the rest of the crowd to film in the beautiful Australia Hall, which felt like a fitting venue for this performance of "Golden Thing".

Lemoncello is comprised of Laura Quirke (on guitar here) and Claire Kinsella (on the banjo). They're a truly magical musical group. Every song is a banger, and every song sounds authentic and true. It's the sound of two fine people doing what comes most naturally to them, and we're very grateful to have the chance to capture it for us all to enjoy and be inspired by.
Laura is quite the filmmaker as well, she directed some very cool and expressive music videos for some of the tunes - I highly recommend looking for them. She also directed a full film (on 16mm tape! crazy cool!) that I can't wait to see, as the trailer is incredibly moving. All in all, Lemoncello are a special pair of humans doing powerfully creative things. Support them however you can.

01.01.1970 01:00:00 19.05.2023 19:17:47 And there I was, back in Dublin, Ireland for a spell in October of 2022. I'd loved my first couple trips so much; the magic of the music, the pub sessions, the artists and the buoyant spirit of it all. I wanted to see what Dublin for a month might look like, living like a local, really in there. Well, turns out it is a lot like living anywhere as me for a whole month. Mystery solved! It isn't the place so much as the people, and you meet more people when you're moving, so my advice is to keep it moving. This trip was most special when I was traveling and meeting others, and most insufferable when I was sitting alone in my rented flat in town.
Some folks I met in my travels last time, and was so lucky to meet again this time, were Laura Quirke and Claire Kinsella, together the band Lemoncello (https://youtu.be/zSBKP7tG9Kk). I love everything these two put out, and the artistry they pour into it. So my metaphorical hats off to them, thanks for putting up with me and my weird little DV camera. They fixed me dinner and tea for pete's sake. 01.01.1970 01:00:00 18.05.2023 16:24:54 We're looking back today at @LemonCello - They're a wonderful Irish duo comprised Laura Quirke (on guitar here) and Claire Kinsella (on the cello). This field recording was captured in Dublin on the last Gems trip out there. The tune is called "Always Neighbors".
Tomorrow we've got a new field recording of theirs releasing, but for now I just want to revel in this song. It's one of my all-time favorite sessions, unabashedly. They had this to say: "To us, Always Neighbors is an ode to the cyclical nature of love and life. A reminder that in order to be free, we must let the past go while knowing it is what has given us the resilience to march on.”
This one has grown on me over the listens, I find myself singing it around the house and reflecting on the deep sentiment of estranged lovers growing together in place but apart in mind.
