The band name comes from a CARCASS song off the "Swansong" 1996 album. BLACKSTAR released only a full-length album. After a while, the band was forced to change its name to BLACKSTAR RISING. BLACKSTAR proceeded to split-up around 1998/1999 after Regadas had decided to leave the band. In 1999 drummer Ken Owen fell victim to a brain haemorrhage, which effectively put the band to rest for good. They played a straightforward '70s metal/rock style not unlike the album "Swansong" from CARCASS. BARBED WIRE SOUL was the first and only full-length album released in 1997 through Peaceville Records. The band recorded a demo that year, "Demo '87", before Danny Coralles joined in 1988 immediately prior to the recording of their second demo, "Critical Madness", and along with Reifert and Cutler, would be a constant in the band's lineup. The band signed to Peaceville Records and released their debut album, "Severed Survival" in 1989. These early recordings featured a pioneering death metal style that adopted a slower, doom metal influenced sound. A difficult UU.S. tour in 1993 led to the decision to disband Autopsy after the recording of a final album. "Shitfun", released in early 1995, was heavily influenced by hardcore punk and would prepare fans for ABSCESS, previously a side project of Danny Coralles and Chris Reifert which would become their main band after AUTOPSY's demise. AUTOPSY was featured in the 2005 music documentary "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" when the film's narrator and star, Sam Dunn read aloud a verse from the band's song "Charred Remains". Along with fellow Bay Area band POSSESSED and Reifert's previous group DEATH, AUTOPSY have been considered a pioneering band in the death metal genre. Early bands such as ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, GOREFEST, IMMOLATION, CANNIBAL CORPSE and DEICIDE have all credited AUTOPSY as an influence in their sound. In addition, AUTOPSY have helped to pioneer death-doom. The band disbanded in 1995 and reunited in 2009. THE TOMB WITHIN is an Extended Play released September 13, 2010, through Peaceville Records. In Josef Dominik's place, Michael Wulf joined, just to leave the band shortly after the recordings of what would be their first full-length album, 1986's "OBSESSED BY CRUELTY", to join KREATOR (where he would last only one show) With their new guitarist Frank Gosdzik, the most legendary Sodom line-up recorded two albums (plus a live album, "MORTAL WAY OF LIVE", the first of various SODOM releases which had a censored cover in Germany), "PERSECUTION MANIA" (which was the first SODOM album produced by the band's long-time producer Harris Johns and also was the first cover to feature the band's mascot "Knarrenheinz") and "AGENT ORANGE" (including the single "AUSGEBOMBT"). Gosdzik left in 1989 (like Michael Wulf before, he joined KREATOR) and was replaced by ex-ASSASSIN guitarist Michael Hoffmann. In 1992, Tom fired Christian Dudek after increasing bouts with substance abuse. Guido Richter, who would stay in the band until 1996 (and, like many former SODOM members, was still embittered that Tom fired him), became the new drummer. From 1997 to 2010, SODOM had a consistent line-up of Thomas Such, Konrad Schottkowski, and Bernd Kost. In 2007, Tom re-assembled the "INTHE SIGN OF EVIL" membership (Christian Dudek and Josef Dominik) to re-record the original E.P. and other songs from the same era and release it as the full-length album it was originally intended to be under the name "THE FINAL SIGN OF EVIL". The band is currently composed of Thomas Such, guitarists Frank Gosdzik (who was a member of SODOM from 1987 to 1989 and rejoined in 2018) and Yorck Segatz, and drummer Toni Merkel. Along with KREATOR, DESTRUCTION and TANKARD, SODOM has been referred to as one of the "Big Four" of Teutonic thrash metal. While three of those bands (except TANKARD) created a sound that would influence the death metal and black metal genres, SODOM's early music style would greatly influence many late 1980s and early 1990s black metal bands more than others. The band name comes from a CARCASS song off the "Swansong" 1996 album. BLACKSTAR released only a full-length album. After a while, the band was forced to change its name to BLACKSTAR RISING. BLACKSTAR proceeded to split-up around 1998/1999 after Regadas had decided to leave the band. In 1999 drummer Ken Owen fell victim to a brain haemorrhage, which effectively put the band to rest for good. They played a straightforward '70s metal/rock style not unlike the album "Swansong" from CARCASS. BARBED WIRE SOUL was the first and only full-length album released in 1997 through Peaceville Records. The band recorded a demo that year, "Demo '87", before Danny Coralles joined in 1988 immediately prior to the recording of their second demo, "Critical Madness", and along with Reifert and Cutler, would be a constant in the band's lineup. The band signed to Peaceville Records and released their debut album, "Severed Survival" in 1989. These early recordings featured a pioneering death metal style that adopted a slower, doom metal influenced sound. A difficult UU.S. tour in 1993 led to the decision to disband Autopsy after the recording of a final album. "Shitfun", released in early 1995, was heavily influenced by hardcore punk and would prepare fans for ABSCESS, previously a side project of Danny Coralles and Chris Reifert which would become their main band after AUTOPSY's demise. AUTOPSY was featured in the 2005 music documentary "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" when the film's narrator and star, Sam Dunn read aloud a verse from the band's song "Charred Remains". Along with fellow Bay Area band POSSESSED and Reifert's previous group DEATH, AUTOPSY have been considered a pioneering band in the death metal genre. Early bands such as ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, GOREFEST, IMMOLATION, CANNIBAL CORPSE and DEICIDE have all credited AUTOPSY as an influence in their sound. They were mostly influenced by bands like MOTÖRHEAD, TANK, RAVEN, and VENOM. They soon found a drummer called Rainer Focke who was quickly replaced by Christian Dudek, with whom they released two demos, 1982/83's "WITCHING METAL" & 1984's "VICTIMS OF DEATH", before signing a deal with SPV GmbH. After a 1984 gig in Frankfurt (with DESTRUCTION & TANKARD), Manfred Schütz of SPV GmbH approached the band & spoke the legendary sentence "You guys are so bad, you will sell a lot of records!" This led to the recording of their debut E.P. "IN THE SIGN OF EVIL". Missing was Frank Terstegen, who'd left the band. He was replaced by Josef Dominik (recommended to the band by KREATOR's Mille Petrozza), who also wouldn't stay very long. In Josef Dominik's place, Michael Wulf joined, just to leave the band shortly after the recordings of what would be their first full-length album, 1986's "OBSESSED BY CRUELTY", to join KREATOR (where he would last only one show) With their new guitarist Frank Gosdzik, the most legendary Sodom line-up recorded two albums (plus a live album, "MORTAL WAY OF LIVE", the first of various SODOM releases which had a censored cover in Germany), "PERSECUTION MANIA" (which was the first SODOM album produced by the band's long-time producer Harris Johns and also was the first cover to feature the band's mascot "Knarrenheinz") and "AGENT ORANGE" (including the single "AUSGEBOMBT"). Gosdzik left in 1989 (like Michael Wulf before, he joined KREATOR) and was replaced by ex-ASSASSIN guitarist Michael Hoffmann. In 1992, Tom fired Christian Dudek after increasing bouts with substance abuse. Guido Richter, who would stay in the band until 1996 (and, like many former SODOM members, was still embittered that Tom fired him), became the new drummer. From 1997 to 2010, SODOM had a consistent line-up of Thomas Such, Konrad Schottkowski, and Bernd Kost. In 2007, Tom re-assembled the "INTHE SIGN OF EVIL" membership (Christian Dudek and Josef Dominik) to re-record the original E.P. and other songs from the same era and release it as the full-length album it was originally intended to be under the name "THE FINAL SIGN OF EVIL". The band is currently composed of Thomas Such, guitarists Frank Gosdzik (who was a member of SODOM from 1987 to 1989 and rejoined in 2018) and Yorck Segatz, and drummer Toni Merkel. Along with KREATOR, DESTRUCTION and TANKARD, SODOM has been referred to as one of the "Big Four" of Teutonic thrash metal. While three of those bands (except TANKARD) created a sound that would influence the death metal and black metal genres, SODOM's early music style would greatly influence many late 1980s and early 1990s black metal bands more than others. The band went through many lineup changes in its early stages. Since 2013, the band has consisted of Ian, drummer Charlie Benante, bassist Frank Bello, vocalist Joey Belladonna and lead guitarist Jonathan Donais. Ian and Benante (who replaced one-time drummer Greg D'Angelo in 1983) are the only two members to appear on every album, while Bello has been a member of Anthrax since 1984, replacing original bassist Dan Lilker. After two stints in Anthrax, from 1984 to 1992 and again from 2005 to 2007, Belladonna returned to the band in 2010. ANTHRAX is considered one of the leaders of the thrash metal scene from the 1980s and is part of the "Big Four" of the genre, along with METALLICA, MEGADETH and SLAYER. They were also one of the first thrash metal bands (along with OVERKILL and NUCLEAR ASSAULT) to emerge from the East Coast. The band was originally formed in 1983 as DEATH STRIKE, after the demise of the band WAR CRY. Paul Speckmann began playing bass in WAR CRY where he met drummer Bill Schmidt who was drafted to replace previous WAR CRY drummer Joe Laccino. Together, Speckmann and Schmidt formed a more aggressive metal band based around VENOM, SLAYER and MOTÖRHEAD, and the emerging extreme metal movement. Eventually, Schmidt and Speckmann left WAR CRY, who, after their departure, also lost most of their heaviness. Schmidt had begun writing songs in the thrash vein as early as mid-'83 and Speckmann followed suit. Speckmann then started his own band, DEATH STRIKE, using songs originally written for MASTER. He was joined by guitarist Chris Mittlebrun and together wrote more DEATH STRIKE songs. A second guitarist, the sixteen-year-old Kirk Miller, was brought in along with drummer John Leprich. After DEATH STRIKE's "Fuckin' Death" demo made an impact on the underground, Bill Schmidt begged Speckmann to rejoin the band. As DEATH STRIKE drummer John Leprich could barely get the beats down for "Pay to Die" and was, according to Speckmann, a drunk, Schmidt reentered the fold. After kicking out Miller (who Speckman says was really just a session musician), the band was renamed MASTER. Guitarist Chris Mittlebrun stayed in the band as Schmidt was highly impressed with his songwriting skills. They named their band MASTER in 1985 and auditioned twenty-six guitarists, none of whom were suited to the task. This caused Schmidt to leave MASTER and join the local metal act MAYHEM INC. ABOMINATION was an American Thrash Metal band from Chicago, Illinois formed in 1987 by Paul Speckmann. The trio added drummer Oliver Werner and second guitarist Bernhard Rappric. Their earliest written song was called "Ray Death", a song about nuclear war and their first gig was played in a local classroom in 1983. Soon after, Bernhard Rapprich left the band as his conservative father did not want him "hanging around with a bunch of drunks" and he was replaced by Andy Bulgaropoulos. At first, they were known under the names AVENGER and VORTEX before settling on TANKARD in 1983. The band chose their name after looking through a dictionary and seeing a word defined as "beer mug". In the early days of the band, Andreas Geremia used to play bass and Frank Thorwarth was the singer. Later, they switched their roles. Alongside KREATOR, DESTRUCTION and SODOM, TANKARD is often considered one of the "Big Four" of Teutonic Thrash Metal. Stylistically, TANKARD have consistently played thrash metal that thematically centres primarily on alcohol reverence unlike the remaining "Big Teutonic Four" who are all known for covering such topics related to death, politics, violence and anti-fascism. Manne Svensson, Johan Enochsson and Nicke Hagen (together with Daniel Robertsson on bass) were also in a side-project called FLESHCRAWL, formed in the summer of 1991. It explains the "Nicke from Fleshcrawl" credit on the "Seeming Salvation" inner-sleeve. Some demos were recorded but never officially released. "Dreams Like Deserts" in 1995. In 1996, they were joined by MAYHEM guitarist Rune Eriksen, who contributed to the release of "Black Thrash Attack", their first full-length album. The band is heavily influenced by early thrash bands such as Voivod, Slayer, Sodom and Kreator, to the latter they have also dedicated some of their songs. The band's main lyrical themes focus on blasphemy, death and aggression. In 2004, they were the first band to be signed to Tyrant Syndicate Productions, a sub-label of Peaceville Records, run by Nocturno Culto and Fenriz (both of Darkthrone) The band was put on hold after Carl-Michael Eide was in an accident in late March 2005. It is alleged that he either jumped or fell out from a fourth floor window, and landed on his legs after falling ten metres. In May 2006, Eide appeared as a guest in the Norwegian radio programme Tinitus, where he confirmed he uses a wheelchair due to being paralyzed from the ankles down. It was originally formed in 1985 as UNKNOWN DEATH by vocalist Oscar Garcia and guitarist Jesse Pintado. They would rename themselves TERORIZER after recruiting drummer Pete Sandoval, who remains the band's sole constant member throughout their discography, in 1986. After releasing a handful of demo tapes in 1987 and 1988 and splitting up in 1988, they recorded the full-length album "WORLD DOWNFALL" posthumously in the now legendary Morrisound Recordings studio (Tampa, Florida) with engineer-guru Scott Burns. At the time of this recording TERRORIZER's original bass player Garvey was in jail so David Vincent (MORBID ANGEL) filled in. TERRORIZER struggled to find success during their initial existence, and would disband in 1988 after Sandoval left to join MORBID ANGEL. They were briefly regrouped by David Vincent to record their highly influential debut album "WORLD DOWNFALL" (1989), before they split up again later that year when Pintado left to join NAPALM DEATH. In 2005, Pintado and Sandoval reformed TERRORIZER without Garcia. TERRORIZER became inactive once again due to Pintado's death only five days after the album's release on August 27, 2006. After being revived by Sandoval in 2009, TERRORIZER has released two more albums, Hordes of Zombies (2012) and Caustic Attack (2018), each featuring a different lineup. The band's current line-up consists of Sandoval, bassist David Vincent, vocalist Brian Werner and guitarist Richie Brown. TERRORIZER's lyrics were typical socio-political grindcore lyrics with animal rights/environmental topics handled as well. WORLD DOWNFALL is their debut studio album released on November 13, 1989, through Earache Records. It was produced by David Vincent (MORBID ANGEL), who also performed bass on the album, and engineered by Scott Burns at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida. ZYKLON-B was a Norwegian black metal supergroup founded in 1995. The band's members were Tomas "Samoth" Haugen (guitar and bass) and Vegard "Ihsahn" Tveitan (keyboard) from EMPEROR, Kjetil "Frost" Haraldstad (drums) from SATYRICON and Björn "Aldrahn" Gjerde (vocals) from DØDHEIMSGARD. Their lyrics dealt mainly with death, apocalypse and warfare. The band recorded only one E.P. Other versions of the featured songs were featured on split releases with MAYHEM and SWORDMASTER. The name refers to Zyklon B, a gas used in gas chambers during the Holocaust. Despite the name the band states that "Zyklon-B is not related to any political or racial preference". They were mostly influenced by bands like MOTÖRHEAD, TANK, RAVEN, and VENOM. They soon found a drummer called Rainer Focke who was quickly replaced by Christian Dudek, with whom they released two demos, 1982/83's "Witching Metal" & 1984's "Victims of Death", before signing a deal with SPV GmbH. After a 1984 gig in Frankfurt (with Destruction & Tankard), Manfred Schütz of SPV GmbH approached the band & spoke the legendary sentence "You guys are so bad, you will sell a lot of records!" This led to the recording of their debut E.P. "In the Sign of Evil". Missing was Frank Terstegen, who'd left the band. He was replaced by Josef Dominik (recommended to the band by Kreator's Mille Petrozza), who also wouldn't stay very long. In Josef Dominik's place, Michael Wulf joined, just to leave the band shortly after the recordings of what would be their first full-length album, 1986's "Obsessed by Cruelty", to join Kreator (where he would last only one show) With their new guitarist Frank Gosdzik, the most legendary Sodom line-up recorded two albums (plus a live album, "Mortal Way of Live", the first of various Sodom releases which had a censored cover in Germany), "Persecution Mania" (which was the first Sodom album produced by the band's long-time producer Harris Johns and also was the first cover to feature the band's mascot "Knarrenheinz") and "Agent Orange" (including the single "Ausgebombt"). Gosdzik left in 1989 (like Michael Wulf before, he joined Kreator) and was replaced by ex-Assassin guitarist Michael Hoffmann. In 1992, Tom fired Christian Dudek after increasing bouts with substance abuse. Guido Richter, who would stay in the band until 1996 (and, like many former Sodom members, was still embittered that Tom fired him), became the new drummer. From 1997 to 2010, SODOM had a consistent line-up of Thomas Such, Konrad Schottkowski, and Bernd Kost. In 2007, Tom re-assembled the "In the Sign of Evil" membership (Christian Dudek and Josef Dominik) to re-record the original E.P. and other songs from the same era and release it as the full-length album it was originally intended to be under the name "The Final Sign of Evil". The band is currently composed of Thomas Such, guitarists Frank Gosdzik (who was a member of Sodom from 1987 to 1989 and rejoined in 2018) and Yorck Segatz, and drummer Toni Merkel. Along with Kreator, Destruction and Tankard, Sodom has been referred to as one of the "Big Four" of Teutonic thrash metal. While three of those bands (except Tankard) created a sound that would influence the death metal and black metal genres, SODOM's early music style would greatly influence many late 1980s and early 1990s black metal bands more than others. In late 1990, the band originally started under the name ENTHRONE by Roger Rasmussen (then bearing the pseudonym Lord Nosferatu) and Johnny Krøvel (who used the pseudonym Lord Karnstein). Together they produced a self-released demo tape, "Black Winds", in 1991. In 1992, ENTHRONE changed its name to "CARPATHIAN FOREST". Since the release of the now legendary demo "Bloodlust & Perversion" in 1992 and their 1993 promo "Journey Through The Cold Moors Of Svarttjern", the band have earned a cult status in the Norwegian Black Metal scene. CARPATHIAN FOREST are unique among Black Metal bands in their use of themes for their lyrics, as they not only deal with Satanism, darkness, anti-Christianity, etc. but also include sadism, sexual depravity, suicide and other morbid themes besides the usual Black Metal ones. To date, the band has released three studio albums: Abbath (2016), Outstrider (2019) and Dread Reaver (2022). In April 2015, Olve Eikemo recruited members to the band, specifically Tom Cato Visnes from "God Seed" and drummer Kevin Foley to participate in the band. They also recruited "Vredehammer" guitarist and vocalist Per Valla to tour with the band as lead guitarist. On December 12, 2015, it was announced that drummer Kevin Foley left the band. Several days later on December 15, live member Per Valla left the band. At the start of 2016 Gabe Seeber, donning the Creature mask, joined as live drummer replacing Kevin Foley and replacing Per Valla is Ole André Farstad, who played on the debut album, joined as live guitarist. On July 11, 2018, Tom Cato Visnes have left the band due to conflicting views on lyrical concepts of the upcoming album. Emil Wiksten also left the band shortly after. The band originally formed as DOLMEN in 1989, and after briefly taking the name AZATHOTH, they became ABSU in 1991. After recording two demos and releasing an E.P., they were joined by Russley Givens (drums, vocals, lyrics), David Ward (guitars), and Brian Artwick (keyboards, synth, sequencing). The band is heavily influenced by early thrash bands such as Voivod, Slayer, Sodom and Kreator, to the latter they have also dedicated some of their songs. The band's main lyrical themes focus on blasphemy, death and aggression. AURA NOIR was formed in 1993 by Carl-Michael Eide and Ole Jørgen Moe, who sent out a couple of demos before releasing the underground E.P. "Dreams Like Deserts" in 1995. In 1996, they were joined by MAYHEM guitarist Rune Eriksen, who contributed to the release of "Black Thrash Attack", their first full-length album. In 2004, they were the first band to be signed to Tyrant Syndicate Productions, a sub-label of Peaceville Records, run by Nocturno Culto and Fenriz (both of Darkthrone) The band was put on hold after Carl-Michael Eide was in an accident in late March 2005. It is alleged that he either jumped or fell out from a fourth floor window, and landed on his legs after falling ten metres. In May 2006, Eide appeared as a guest in the Norwegian radio programme Tinitus, where he confirmed he uses a wheelchair due to being paralyzed from the ankles down. Although BURZUM never played live performances, it became a part of the early Norwegian black metal scene and is considered one of the most influential acts in black metal's history. He has also released four dark ambient and neofolk albums. The word "burzum" means "darkness" in the black speech, a fictional language crafted by Lord of the Rings writer J. R. R. Tolkien. BURZUM's lyrics and imagery are often inspired by fantasy and Norse mythology, and do not feature the political views Vikernes is known for. Vikernes recorded the first four BURZUM albums between January 1992 and March 1993. From 1994 to 2009, He was imprisoned for the murder of Mayhem guitarist Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth and the arson of three churches. While imprisoned, he recorded two dark ambient albums using only synthesizers, as he had no access to drums, guitar, or bass. Since his release from prison in 2009, he has recorded several more albums. FALLEN is his eighth full-length album released in 2011 through Byelobog Productions. FALLEN was recorded and mixed during two weeks in Grieghallen studios, using a Spector bass with alembic electronics on a Vox AC50 amp from 1965, a Ludwig drum kit (with a 26-inch kick) from 1975, a Neumann M149 microphone and stereo Schoeps CMTS 501 U microphones for vocals, an OBH Nordica Harmony 6487, a custom Stig instrument and a Peavey 23 guitar on a Peavey 6505 (120 Watt) amp. According to Varg Vikernes himself, "Musically "FALLEN" is like a cross between "Belus" and something new, inspired more by the debut album and "Det som engang var" than by "Hvis lyset tar oss" or "Filosofem". The sound is more dynamic – we mastered the album as if it was classical music – and I was more experimental than I was on Belus in all respects. Lyricwise it is similar to the debut album, in the way that it is more personal and focuses on existential issues, but the mythological undertone known from Belus is still there. After a 1984 gig in Frankfurt (with Destruction & Tankard), Manfred Schütz of SPV GmbH approached the band & spoke the legendary sentence "You guys are so bad, you will sell a lot of records!" This led to the recording of their debut E.P. "In the Sign of Evil". Missing was Frank Terstegen, who'd left the band. He was replaced by Josef Dominik (recommended to the band by Kreator's Mille Petrozza), who also wouldn't stay very long. Juha Sulasalmi formed NOMINON in January 1993 together with Peter Nilsson, after their previous band CHORONZON had broke up. To get a complete line-up was difficult so they stayed as a duo. With this line-up they released two demos: Daemon I and II - both in 1993. The music they played back then was a mix of Death Metal and Black Metal, and the demos were spread only in the Swedish underground.
