Yâ€™ see, a while ago, I made a promise to a goofy kid with nothing but a Washburn guitar and a dreamâ€. Deep in the Forest of Focaccia near the Caves of Marinara, there lives a fearsome Dragon who fiercely guards a wondrous, circular food source: Pizza! â€œWhich of my brave Knighs is willing to risk certain incineration to bring Pizza back to Camelot?â€ The Knights look at each other nervously. Some wistle quietly. Then the fearless and stupidly good-looking Sir Lance-alot steps forward to kneel before King Arthur. â€œI will take up the Quest, and I will use my lance alot to slay the Dragon!â€ The other Knighs breathe a sigh of relief, murmering softly. Suddenly the beautiful Lady Guenivere, who has always had a â€˜thingâ€™ for Lance-Alot, shrieks, â€œWait! Didnâ€™t you hear the part about the fire-breathing Dragon? Please, oh great absolute monarch Arthur, donâ€™t let him go!!! I know this Dragon - heâ€™s aways flying over me when Iâ€™m bathing. Heâ€™s a real creep!â€ King Arthur asks Lance-Alot, sotto voce, â€œTell your chick to chill! Get the pizza, and Iâ€™ll order beer.â€ Lance-Alot kisses Guenivere enough to banish any common sense, and promises to be back in a few minutes. He jumps on his steed named McNee and gallops across the countryside to the Enchanted forest. Reaching the Caves of Marinara, Lance-Alot is shocked to find that the Dragon has captured Guenivere, and threatens to cook her like he has cooked the huge pizza which lies before him. As much as he loves Guenivere, his Quest is to get the pizza, and a firey battle ensues. After an expertly choreographed fight scene, Lance-Alot pulls Guenivere on to McNeeâ€™s back, and grabs the pizza, hightailing it back to Camelot. The Dragon, his family and friends take to the sky in defeat. Lance-Alotâ€™s heroism is rewarded by Arthur and all the Knights at Camelot with warm camaraderie, and many kisses from Guenivere. ··· ··· ··· ··· The late Tony Walters was born in Cleveland, Ohio, son of a professional jazz muscian. I worked with him on many sessions, gigs, and on my solo albums. His credits include touring with Diana Ross for 4 years, Tina Turner, Sting, George Michael, Toto, Robbie Williams, The Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue, Michael MacDonald, Brenda Russell, Kenny Loggins, Natalie Cole. I also produced 4 duets with one of Tony’s biggest fans, Michel Legrand. I later produced an album we were both very proud of, “Lucky to Be Me”. Because of his great session skills, and because he could read music, I did an a cappella arrangement of the beautiful Chaka Khan/Bruce Hornsby song “Love Me Still”. Bring back the divine, and rather shiny liquid so we may live eternal life (without commercials or robo calls!)” Across the desert they would have to travel, on camels, horseback, and even on foot. It was a mystically hopeless task. Then the Pharoah, ready for lunch, called out once more to inspire his fearless, yet simple-minded men. “Your journey will be plagued by heat, sand, locusts, and scorpions." But take heart, for if you find the CHROME WATERFALL, someday in the future, the prophets fortell that a struggling, bearded composer known as RICHARD NILES will compose a piece of music about it, and he will force the brilliant cellist DENNIS KARMZYN and the phenomenal pianist CLIVE DUNSTALL to play this challenging, yet mellifluous piece. Niles arranged the great standard “When I Fall in Love” for Ball as a duet with Shirley Bassey, based on the success of the song as a duet for Clive Griffin and Celine Dion. ··· ··· ··· ··· “Chase Through Manhattan” is music by Richard Niles – a soundtrack to a noir thriller full of crime, passion, sex, and unpaid royalties. New York has been ravaged by a killer who steals people’s clothes so often, it is known as the Naked City! Police Commissioner Niles, a hard-bitten cop from the sun-baked Sodom of Hollywood, takes on the case with nothing but a working copy of Sibelius and a couple of crazy detectives. Dennis Karmazyn, armed with a cello that has played on 4000 film scores, hits the streets with his trigger-happy British partner. Clive Dunstall laughs contemptuously at the avalanche of notes Commissioner Niles throws at his smoking piano. “Ha, ha,” he snorts. “You set ‘em up, and I’ll knock ‘em down!” The thrilling ending spells tears before bedtime for the crooks, and a fat invoice for the Commisssioner. Niles looks into camera, without blinking, inhales another espresso and grunts, “When you start chasing evil, you get TOLD - told to shove it by wise guys in limos and frails with gold records on their bathroom walls. Sure, there are gonna be more grifters with gold shoes, and more jazz babes willing to take their cash. To hell with the consequences, I’m going through with this – not just because it’s my job. Y’ see, a while ago, I made a promise to a goofy kid with nothing but a Washburn guitar and a dream”. ··· ··· ··· ··· Performed by cellist Dennis Karmazyn and pianist Clive Dunstall, “Imperial Quest”, a musical composition by Richard Niles, tells an ancient story of 6th Century Britain. King Arthur falls asleep in a mystical forest and has a prophetic vision of a new type of nourishment for mankind. Back at Camelot, he assembles the Knights of the Round Table an tells them about his mystical revelation. Deep in the Forest of Focaccia near the Caves of Marinara, there lives a fearsome Dragon who fiercely guards a wondrous, circular food source: Pizza! “Which of my brave Knighs is willing to risk certain incineration to bring Pizza back to Camelot?” The Knights look at each other nervously. Some wistle quietly. Then the fearless and stupidly good-looking Sir Lance-alot steps forward to kneel before King Arthur. “I will take up the Quest, and I will use my lance alot to slay the Dragon!” The other Knighs breathe a sigh of relief, murmering softly. Suddenly the beautiful Lady Guenivere, who has always had a ‘thing’ for Lance-Alot, shrieks, “Wait! Didn’t you hear the part about the fire-breathing Dragon? Please, oh great absolute monarch Arthur, don’t let him go!!! I know this Dragon - he’s aways flying over me when I’m bathing. He’s a real creep!” King Arthur asks Lance-Alot, sotto voce, “Tell your chick to chill! Get the pizza, and I’ll order beer.” Lance-Alot kisses Guenivere enough to banish any common sense, and promises to be back in a few minutes. He jumps on his steed named McNee and gallops across the countryside to the Enchanted forest. Reaching the Caves of Marinara, Lance-Alot is shocked to find that the Dragon has captured Guenivere, and threatens to cook her like he has cooked the huge pizza which lies before him. As much as he loves Guenivere, his Quest is to get the pizza, and a firey battle ensues. After an expertly choreographed fight scene, Lance-Alot pulls Guenivere on to McNee’s back, and grabs the pizza, hightailing it back to Camelot. The Dragon, his family and friends take to the sky in defeat. Lance-Alot’s heroism is rewarded by Arthur and all the Knights at Camelot with warm camaraderie, and many kisses from Guenivere. ··· ··· ··· ··· Composer Richard Niles wrote “Tame thy Pen” in 1974 while at the Berklee College of Music studying with Pat Metheny. The title is an anagram of Metheny’s name. The song is in the Real Book, a well-known songbook used by musicians on gigs. Niles recorded the composition on his album “Club Deranged” in 1999 with Danny Gottlieb (drums) and Steve Hamilton (piano). In his new book “Adventures in Jazz Composition” Niles answers the question, “What makes a composition a JAZZ composition?” He reveals the techniques and concepts he has used throughout his career writing for his many albums as guitarist, but also as leader of his jazz orchestra BANDZILLA (“Blue Movies” 1987, and “Bandzilla Rises!!! 2018).
