Composer Richard Niles wrote “Inside Story” for his new album, “NILES SMILES”, a groove-driven, infectiously funky album that expresses Niles’ trademark imagination and humor. The sound is a dazzling section of three brass, (trumpeter John Thirkell (who has performed on 40 Top 10 hits, including Bruno Mars), saxist Snake Davis (Sting), and trombonist Joey Sellers (Jazz Aggregation), with a virtuosic rhythm section, including guitarist Niles, drummer Ian Palmer (Randy Brecker, Martin Taylor), bassist Mark Egan (Pat Metheny, Gil Evans), and Niles’ son Alexander Niles on keyboards. Niles’ impossible vocal arrangements are performed by the supersonic Kim Chandler (The Bee Gees, Michael McDonald).
“Inside Story” is analyzed in Niles’ new book “Adventures in Jazz Composition”.
