6:: Progressive Christian Bible Study – The Automatic Growth of God's Realm (Mark 4)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 13.06.2024 · 18:05:50 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· This week we're looking at two parables about the kingdom or realm of God, as told by Jesus. Both focus on growth and both describe this growth as happening automatically – by the hand of God. The realm of God is both external to us and internal inside of us. It's something happening in the world that we contribute to, and something happening inside of us because of the showering of grace in our lives.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 07.06.2024 · 07:39:35 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Second Corinthians 4:13-5:1 sets up a contrast between the external and the internal, the fading and the eternal, the ephemeral and the really real. When so much of life involves change, disappointment, suffering, hardship, etc., this text provides a different and more hope-filled way to view things by helping us to answer such questions as What matters most in life? What anchors our identity? Where can we find meaning and purpose?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 18.05.2024 · 01:09:41 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Pentecost Sunday is the day we celebrate God's spirit (wind, breath, power) in all things, especially the church. Acts chapter 2 narrates the spirit's arrival using the symbolism of fire and diverse languages/tongues to communicate the ideas of universalism, inclusivity, and the unity of humanity.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.05.2024 · 19:20:41 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· The Ascension of Jesus in the New Testament and in ancient Christian creeds presumes movement of Jesus from earth "up" to heaven. This language is problematic today; however, it doesn't mean the Ascension can't provide meaning in our lives of faith. One way to read the story is to see it as an example of God putting faith in us to carry on the work of Jesus.

16:: Progressive Christian Bible Study – Baptism and Belovedness (Mark 1:4-11)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 12.01.2024 · 07:11:23 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· When the New Testament gospel writers narrate the baptism of Jesus, they seem to struggle with the question of Why Jesus would need to be baptized. This week we look at this question with fresh eyes. Perhaps the struggle was over baptism as a symbolic reminder of grace. Why would Jesus need such a reminder? Mark's version of the story answers the question by highlighting the extraordinary things that happened when Jesus was baptized.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 04.01.2024 · 20:19:35 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· The story about the magi (or wise men) in Matthew's gospel shares a good deal in common with an ancient prophecy in Isaiah 60 about light shining on gentiles (non-Jews). This raises interesting questions about prophecy, fulfillment, and how the gospel stories were told by the gospel writers.

··· ··· ··· ··· During Advent we remind ourselves of a central theme of the season: the blending of divine and human, spirit and matter, the spiritual and the material. Put differently, the purpose of the religious/spiritual life is transforming the self in order to make a concrete difference in the world. Isaiah 61 makes this theme explicit.

Richard Rohr created a litany of these names while spending time on a retreat, and we'll use this litany as a lens to read the Pentecost story in a fresh way.

43:: Progressive Christian Bible Study – Ascension and Liberation in Luke 24

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 19.05.2023 · 02:28:23 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· This coming Sunday is Ascension Sunday. The gospel reading from Luke 24 narrates one of only two descriptions in the New Testament of Christ "ascending into heaven" after the resurrection. The problem with both accounts is that they are textually unstable, which is a fancy way of saying "we're not sure what the Greek text originally said." And yet, the Ascension occupies a large place in traditional Christian theology (e.g., the Apostles' Creed). To creatively probe this problem we'll be looking at the work of David Shields on fiction writing and drawing insights from feminist theology to see what Christ "ascending into heaven" makes possible for us.

Abundant life is about recognizing our belovedness and the belovedness of every person. The mission of the church is both to embody this kind of love and to live it in the world.
