We have a tornado.” The F-1 tornado knocked the power out for hours and caused minor damage near Yukon, but the ceremony was never rescheduled.  No words could prepare the class of ‘74 for this moment.  The 1974 graduates have completed all of their coursework of the original 500. Around 200 were there to formally receive their diplomas in front of their children and grandchildren. And for some, their parents. Not everyone was able to attend.  The ceremony was paused to acknowledge the loss of 93 classmates already gone. Their pictures brought back a flood of memories, and family members walked the stage on their behalf.  After five decades of waiting, the class of ‘74 finally turned their tassels. And this time, Mother Nature cooperated./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="8" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="424"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:9hTk07ROiKg/id> yt:videoId>9hTk07ROiKg/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCSGeXKPLsXkSCIwaG2cCjLA/yt:channelId> title>Oklahoma Man Awaits Sentence In Turks And Caicos Ammunition Case/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hTk07ROiKg"/> author> name>News 9 YouTube/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSGeXKPLsXkSCIwaG2cCjLA/uri> /author> published>2024-06-21T13:51:58+00:00/published> updated>2024-06-23T20:42:54+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Oklahoma Man Awaits Sentence In Turks And Caicos Ammunition Case/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/9hTk07ROiKg?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i2.ytimg.com/vi/9hTk07ROiKg/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>An Oklahoma man who has spent the last two months stuck in Turks and Caicos will be sentenced Friday morning. Ryan Watson from Arcadia was caught with ammo in his luggage back in April and he was arrested. He's been on the island ever since. Watson will be formally sentenced at 9 a.m. Tulsa time. That's when he and his family will find out what happens next. Ryan and his family went to Turks and Caicos for a family vacation. When they were trying to leave, airport security found hunting ammo in his bags. It's illegal on the island to have any unlicensed ammunition. Watson's family said they have some hope now. Just last week officials on the island passed an update to the ammunition law. "It's certainly going in the right direction now because they've given the judges the ability either do a fine or you know, an incarceration or custody or both. And so they've given them that ability to try to make sure that the judgment fits the circumstances." If the judge imposes a sentence of only a fine, Watson could be released immediately. That means he could fly home and be back in Oklahoma Friday night./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="2" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="323"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:Z4gd32LNMxs/id> yt:videoId>Z4gd32LNMxs/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCSGeXKPLsXkSCIwaG2cCjLA/yt:channelId> title>How OKC’s Metro Tech Aviation Brings Opportunities And People To Oklahoma/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4gd32LNMxs"/> author> name>News 9 YouTube/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSGeXKPLsXkSCIwaG2cCjLA/uri> /author> published>2024-06-21T13:47:13+00:00/published> updated>2024-06-26T21:01:07+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>How OKC’s Metro Tech Aviation Brings Opportunities And People To Oklahoma/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/Z4gd32LNMxs?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i3.ytimg.com/vi/Z4gd32LNMxs/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Metro Tech is helping fill a need in Oklahoma’s aviation workforce.  The technology school is investing millions of dollars into its MacArthur campus.  Metro Tech’s aviation student Richard Jordan Jr. said this program is where the sky is the limit. “I love working with my hands. I couldn’t sit behind a desk to save my life,” Jordan said. “I feel like I can be myself here.”  Jordan moved to Oklahoma for this opportunity and has seen his life take shape. “I love the experience,” he said.  Jordan is one of 280 students in Metro Tech’s Aviation program. Superintendent Aaron Collins said the school invested $1.8 million to elevate this building’s appearance.  “That’s the value of Oklahoma career tech,” Collins said. “You see a place in which you have pride.”  Collins said people like Jordan are in high demand in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma aviation workforce needs 300 mechanics each year. Flight takes a team and Jordan knows something about teamwork.    The former Missouri Southern State All-American linebacker takes lessons from the gridiron and applies them to his life. His mom works in aviation too and serves as his inspiration.  “Had a great time, but it was definitely just a stepping stone to realize that there’s more to life just than football,” Jordan said. “Maybe the hope is flying for FedEx or a major airline one day. That’d be great.”  Jordan had no ties to Oklahoma, but this opportunity landed Richard where he said he belonged.  “I got hooked so I’m here now,” Jordan said. “Proud to say that I'm a metro tech graduate one day.”  The Oklahoma City Airport Trust repaired the roof of Metro Tech’s facility. The public is invited to check out the renovations and the campus at an open house Friday morning from 10 a.m. to noon at 5600 S MacArthur Blvd in Oklahoma City next to Will Rogers World Airport. Metro Tech is taking applications now for the fall semester./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="5" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="147"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:FbMA4uAtD1M/id> yt:videoId>FbMA4uAtD1M/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCSGeXKPLsXkSCIwaG2cCjLA/yt:channelId> title>FAA, Southwest Airlines Investigating Low-Flying Commercial Jet/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbMA4uAtD1M"/> author> name>News 9 YouTube/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSGeXKPLsXkSCIwaG2cCjLA/uri> /author> published>2024-06-21T13:44:38+00:00/published> updated>2024-06-25T03:07:05+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>FAA, Southwest Airlines Investigating Low-Flying Commercial Jet/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/FbMA4uAtD1M?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i3.ytimg.com/vi/FbMA4uAtD1M/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>The Federal Aviation Administration and Southwest Airlines say they are investigating after a commercial jet flew dangerously low over Yukon early Wednesday morning. According to the FAA, an automated warning sounded prompting an air traffic controller to alert the crew of Southwest Airlines Flight 4069 that it had descended to a low altitude while over Yukon, about nine miles away from Will Rogers World Airport in City. According to the flight tracking website FlightAware, the Boeing 737-800 en route to Oklahoma City from Las Vegas had descended to about 500 feet. A spokesperson for the FAA confirms they are looking into the circumstances promoting the low altitude warning. In a statement, Southwest Airlines said: “Southwest is following its robust Safety Management System and is in contact with the Federal Aviation Administration to understand and address any irregularities with the aircraft’s approach to the airport. Nothing is more important to Southwest than the Safety of our Customers and Employees.” Statement from FAA "This information is preliminary and subject to change.  After an automated warning sounded, an air traffic controller alerted the crew of Southwest Airlines Flight 4069 that the aircraft had descended to a low altitude nine miles away from Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City.  The FAA is investigating the incident that occurred around 12:05 a.m. local time on Wednesday, June 19. Please contact the airline for additional information." The City Planning Commission is greenlighting the plan, which features a new area for Sooner's basketball and gymnastics. "The idea has been said to use it as a catalyst to create more jobs, to create more housing, to candidly create more attractions," said OU's Athletic Director Joe Castiglione. But two OU economics professors who spoke before last night's vote argue that it's not a slam dunk. "Economic research shows that arenas are not economic drivers. They are not this economic catalyst that these folks are claiming to be true," said Cynthia Rogers, an OU Professor of Economics. Castiglione claims that basketball, gymnastics, and other school events would use the arena only 41 days of the year. One hundred thirty or more other nights would be professionally managed to bring in trade shows, concerts, and graduations. "The athletes they are being recruited all over the country are the elite. They have choices. We want them to choose OU," said Castiglione. But before that can happen, the university is asking for additional financial support from the city. OU is requesting a TIF, which means retaining property and sales tax dollars to fund about $230 million of the $300 million arena. During Tuesday's City Council meeting, the board voted to ask residents what they think. OU President Joseph Harroz was not pleased about the delay. Some councilors say that's how they'll base their vote./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="1" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="299"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:Xvx4W1tAKWs/id> yt:videoId>Xvx4W1tAKWs/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCSGeXKPLsXkSCIwaG2cCjLA/yt:channelId> title>Old School Car Cruisers Car Show: You're A Part Of The Family/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xvx4W1tAKWs"/> author> name>News 9 YouTube/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSGeXKPLsXkSCIwaG2cCjLA/uri> /author> published>2024-06-16T02:47:27+00:00/published> updated>2024-06-20T06:51:52+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Old School Car Cruisers Car Show: You're A Part Of The Family/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/Xvx4W1tAKWs?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i1.ytimg.com/vi/Xvx4W1tAKWs/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Old School Cruisers car show seven years in the making is all about giving back. Little did they know, they were giving back way more than they anticipated. “We’ve been doing car shows for about seven or eight years,” said Pastor Mike, president of the Old School Cruisers car club. They are the old school cruisers car club. and this Saturday there will be no shortage of really cool cars for a really good purpose. “We would like for our firefighters to be blessed with bottled water, the impact that we can have on the homeless alliance and the homeless community,” said Pastor Mike. They are asking everyone, participants and guests, to bring a case of bottled water to be given to the Midwest City Fire Department, as well as slightly used or new athletic shoes for the homeless alliance. “It gives us a whole new meaning on why we put car shows together,” said Pastor Mike. The car show is free to attend. There will be entertainment and vendors in the Heritage Plaza parking lot, at Reno and Air Depot in Midwest City. “It’s $20 for cars, $15 for non-cars, three-wheelers as well as motorcycles,” said Pastor Mike. “Lloyd had just gotten his '72 Chevy and I’ve got an old truck too, and I said man we ought to go to this car show, and he was like in awe,” said Annette Allison a participant in last year’s car show.  Last year’s car show changed the lives of Annette and her husband Lloyd. “I look up and here comes this guy walking toward us,” said Lloyd Allison. That guy was Geno Harkins, also known as 'Corvette Geno'. “Can you help with some wiring on the windows? I couldn’t figure out why the windows wouldn’t work up and down,” said Harkins. Lloyd and Annette went and fixed the truck windows that day. “And since then, he’s been out there until midnight almost every night,” said Harkins. They have all become like family and Mr. Geno is still happily driving his '74 Chevy truck that he bought brand new. “I’ll be ninety in about three months, and I wanted to drive this thing a little bit before I meet my maker up there,” said Harkins. “It’s why we do what we do, is to make a difference,” said Pastor. Mike The car show is the Saturday, June 15, in the Heritage Plaza parking lot. The alert was later canceled after the woman was found. Oklahoma County Sheriff's office confirmed that the woman was located, and safe. The scene unfolded outside an Edmond coffee shop. Oklahoma County Sheriff's deputies said they believed this was a possible robbery. However, they revealed limited facts in a case with lots of questions.  “We are trying to figure out all the details,” said Deputy Aaron Brilbeck, public information officer with the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office. “This is very early on in the investigation.”  A Northwest Edmond business strip typically isn’t covered with investigators. However, that was the scene Friday afternoon as Oklahoma County Sheriff’s deputies searched for clues.    “We’re still looking for the suspects in this case right now,” Brilbeck said.  Brilbeck said three men who were possibly carrying guns took a 43-year-old woman from the Edmond Coffee Jerks location on North MacArthur Boulevard and Northwest 178th Street. “We do not believe this was a random kidnapping,” Brilbeck said.  News 9 is not naming the victim or showing her photo in this story due to the lack of information and the potentially sensitive nature of the case – but Brilbeck said a deputy found the victim alone on the southwest side of OKC.  “She was taken and checked out by EMSA,” Brilbeck said. “She’s okay.”  Brilbeck said he could only share a few details about the unique case.  “Still trying to figure out exactly what happened,” Brilbeck said. “It’s extremely unusual for something like this to just kinda happen.”  One employee at the coffee shop told News 9 they saw the incident but were confused about what happened. Brilbeck said they have talked to several witnesses at that shop to learn more information. Investigators said they will release more details on this case early next week./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="17" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="1423"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:8DTjcepb1pc/id> yt:videoId>8DTjcepb1pc/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCSGeXKPLsXkSCIwaG2cCjLA/yt:channelId> title>No Injuries Reported After Car Crashes Into Norman Apartment/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DTjcepb1pc"/> author> name>News 9 YouTube/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSGeXKPLsXkSCIwaG2cCjLA/uri> /author> published>2024-06-16T02:40:42+00:00/published> updated>2024-06-17T10:19:14+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>No Injuries Reported After Car Crashes Into Norman Apartment/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/8DTjcepb1pc?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i1.ytimg.com/vi/8DTjcepb1pc/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>No injuries were reported after a car crashed into an apartment in Norman Friday evening, police say. Oklahoma City police said the gunfight stemmed from a dispute on social media. The mother of the youngest suspect, only 14 years old, has come to her son’s defense. The mother said on Friday her son has never been in trouble, but this week the U.S. Marshal’s Service arrested the teenager and searched his bedroom. The mother said law officers did not find anything. The mother of the accused teenager does not want to show her identity but wants her voice heard. “He doesn’t come from a broken home,” said Donna, the suspect’s mother. “He’s not a bad kid.” Her 14-year-old son now sits in custody at the Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Center. She said her son was not at the southwest Oklahoma City home where a gunfight turned deadly killing 17-year-old Gjmon Davis earlier this month. “I do have proof of it yes, there’s numerous witnesses saying he was not there,” said Donna. “As for him being in a group chat, yeah, but him being there and doing that, no.” The group chat on Instagram escalated into an argument between two groups. Police said one of the posters gave the group an address where they could "fight or shoot it out." Arrest warrants stated the 14-year-old and 19-year-old Shicobion Goosby had guns at the scene and the younger teen fired his weapon.  “He didn’t point no gun,” said Donna. “Like he doesn’t even have a gun at all.” Police arrested six people this week in connection to the shootout that killed Davis, including the victim's younger brother. Police said 21-year-old Keamarion Harris drove the victim and five others to the home where the shooting happened. Harris then drove the victim to a local hospital where he died. They all face first-degree murder charges. “I don’t want my baby to get lost in the system for no reason,” said Donna. “He’s a good kid.”  Police said the car Harris drove to and from the scene was stolen. He faces an additional charge for the stolen car. Three of the suspects are in custody at the Oklahoma County Detention Center and the other three are at the juvenile detention center. None of them have been formally charged by the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="9" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="643"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:qmR4WnchohA/id> yt:videoId>qmR4WnchohA/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCSGeXKPLsXkSCIwaG2cCjLA/yt:channelId> title>1 Shot In NE OKC Road Rage Incident/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmR4WnchohA"/> author> name>News 9 YouTube/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSGeXKPLsXkSCIwaG2cCjLA/uri> /author> published>2024-06-16T02:35:51+00:00/published> updated>2024-06-21T21:38:34+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>1 Shot In NE OKC Road Rage Incident/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/qmR4WnchohA?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i2.ytimg.com/vi/qmR4WnchohA/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>One person is injured after being shot in the arm in a road rage incident in northeast Oklahoma City on Friday, police confirmed. 1:: 50 Years In The Making: Moore Class Of 1974's Graduation

01.01.1970 01:00:00 21.06.2024 13:53:17
There were some loose ends to tie up for the Moore High School class of 1974. 50 years after they started their graduation ceremony, they finally got a chance to finish it.  Jamie Allen and Mike Wilson are among about 500 students who were supposed to graduate from Moore High on May 23rd, 1974.  And until now they've had some unfinished business hanging over their heads.  That evening, they lined up in a cap and gown on graduation day but never got a chance to walk across the stage.  Then all of a sudden, the students heard, “Everybody's gonna clear out, everybody take cover. And this time, Mother Nature cooperated.

2:: Oklahoma Man Awaits Sentence In Turks And Caicos Ammunition Case

01.01.1970 01:00:00 21.06.2024 13:51:58
An Oklahoma man who has spent the last two months stuck in Turks and Caicos will be sentenced Friday morning. That means he could fly home and be back in Oklahoma Friday night.

3:: How OKC’s Metro Tech Aviation Brings Opportunities And People To Oklahoma

01.01.1970 01:00:00 21.06.2024 13:47:13
Metro Tech is helping fill a need in Oklahoma’s aviation workforce. Metro Tech is taking applications now for the fall semester.

4:: FAA, Southwest Airlines Investigating Low-Flying Commercial Jet

01.01.1970 01:00:00 21.06.2024 13:44:38
The Federal Aviation Administration and Southwest Airlines say they are investigating after a commercial jet flew dangerously low over Yukon early Wednesday morning. Please contact the airline for additional information." Background  The automated system is the Minimum Safe Altitude Warning (MSAW), which alerts controllers if an aircraft gets too low.

6:: Proposed $1 Billion Norman Entertainment District: How Would You Vote?

01.01.1970 01:00:00 16.06.2024 02:51:27
After months of postponing discussions, the new Entertainment District in Norman is one step closer to reality. The City Planning Commission is greenlighting the plan, which features a new area for Sooner's basketball and gymnastics. Some councilors say that's how they'll base their vote.

7:: Old School Car Cruisers Car Show: You're A Part Of The Family

01.01.1970 01:00:00 16.06.2024 02:47:27
Old School Cruisers car show seven years in the making is all about giving back. Registration starts at 9 a.m. For more information visit their Facebook page @ Old School Cruisers, Inc.

8:: ‘Unusual’ Reported Kidnapping In Edmond; Oklahoma County Sheriff Investigates

01.01.1970 01:00:00 16.06.2024 02:44:51
A Kasey Alert was issued for a 43-year-old woman, on Friday afternoon in Edmond. Investigators said they will release more details on this case early next week.

10:: Mother Comes To Son's Defense After Arrest In Connection To Deadly SW OKC Gunfight

01.01.1970 01:00:00 16.06.2024 02:38:53
Six people are behind bars, accused in a planned shootout that killed a metro high school student in early June. None of them have been formally charged by the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office.

16:: Oklahoma Grocery Tax Cut To Take Effect Late Summer Following Budget Passage

01.01.1970 01:00:00 31.05.2024 16:28:11
With the passage of the state budget, Oklahomans will soon save money at the grocery store. State lawmakers cut the state’s portion of taxes on groceries. Lawmakers said people can expect to see savings at the end of August.   Most of us can relate to a cart filled with food and an empty wallet after checkout.  “Groceries are very, very high right now,” said Myrtle Taylor, who lives in Oklahoma City. “It is hard to feed a family.”  Taylor has enough to worry about already. She pushes through each day because She’s coming off surgery.   “I’ve been off work since December,” Taylor said. “I’ve been having to rehab myself, having to walk all over again, having to talk all over again. I almost died.”  Her grocery bill at the checkout counter adds another cost to her life.  “A lot of people don’t get any assistance,” Taylor said.  The Consumer Price Index shows the cost of food is up three-point-four percent from the spring of last year.  “I need all the help I can get,” Taylor said.  This year, lawmakers cut the state’s four-point-five percent grocery tax – which is expected to save the average Oklahoman $400 per year. People will feel relief in about 90 days.   “Halleluiah because we need it,” Taylor said.  Sen. Julia Kirt (D-Oklahoma City), said lawmakers disagree on many things, but they joined together for this.  “When we came together, we were able to get something really good done, which is what the people of Oklahoma want us to do,” Kirt said. “This was a time when we really put people first over politics.”  Kirt said the tax cut overs A chance for people like Myrtle to leave the store with less worry and a little extra cash to spare.  “This is gonna be a blessing,” Taylor said.  Counties and municipalities can still charge taxes. Those taxes help pay for roads and EMS services.  Some things are not covered under the grocery tax cut. That includes ready-to-eat foods, like pre-packaged foods and fruit bowls, as well as alcoholic beverages and tobacco products.

Two former staff members with Anadarko Public Schools have been charged with sexual battery, according to court documents. In a statement from the district, Superintendent Jerry McCormick said the district takes the matter seriously and is committed to student safety. According to court documents, one of the accused is former teacher Jim Pahcoddy, who is charged with eight counts of sexual battery and left the district in 2016. More recently, he worked for Boone Apache Public Schools but the district has not yet confirmed if he is still employed by the district. Keith Knight is charged with one count of sexual battery and was the transportation director for Anadarko Public Schools until May 4 of this year. He had worked for the district since 2006 and began as a janitor, except for a nearly four-month stretch between 2018 and 2019. Court documents say the alleged incidents happened in 2013. Myles Stephenson Jr., a former teacher at Boone Apache Public Schools, was arrested in April and charged with lewd acts.  One Anadarko alumni, who prefers to be anonymous for her safety, said she filed a report against Pahcoddy after Stephenson was arrested and saw more women coming forward with similar experiences in Caddo County. McEntire grew up on her family's ranch outside of Atoka and said she credits her success to the grit and determination she was raised with. "I lived on a working cattle ranch all of my life, I was one of Daddy's hired hands, and I was paid by room and board, so it was a rough way of life, but it taught me a lot," McEntire said. Her love of music developed at a young age through her mother, Jacqueline. "My first time behind a microphone was in the first grade; I was singing 'Away In A Manger.' Mama was the one that encouraged us kids to sing. She taught us how to sing because she could sing," McEntire said. She said her singing is a God-given talent, but she would not have been so successful without hard work, luck, and encouragement from her family. "When Mama and I were going to Nashville to meet with Red Steagall to sing a couple of the songs that he had written. I was him hawing around, wanting to pull over and get an ice cream, 'Can we take a detour?' and she said 'Reba, if you don't want to do this we can go home,' but she said, 'Reba if you do this I will be living my dreams through you.' I said 'Well, shoot, why didn't you say that in the beginning? Let's go,'" McEntire said. She said she was doing it for her mom and loved every minute of it, which made it harder when her mom died in 2020. 'When Mama passed, I told Suzy, because we were cleaning Mama and Daddy's house out, I said 'I don't have it anymore,' and she said 'What do you mean?' I said 'Mama's gone, I don't have anybody to do it for anymore," she said 'You'll get it back," McEntire said. With time and faith, she said she got it back about a month later. She says faith is something she has relied on for her whole life and career. "I have known about the lord all of my life, so to be at a point where I don't have him with me, I don't know how I would even exist," McEntire said. "I don't think I could deal with life, so it inspires me, it comforts me, it encourages me, and I am never alone, and I have someone on my side." She says no matter how successful she becomes, Oklahoma will always be her home. "It's the people, I love Oklahoma, the heritage, the history, everything about it I love...except the tornadoes," McEntire said.

19:: 'They're Weaponizing Our Judicial System:' Senator Markwayne Mullin Reacts To Trump Verdict

01.01.1970 01:00:00 31.05.2024 14:35:15
A historic ruling as former President Donald Trump becomes the first United States president to be convicted of a crime after a Manhattan jury found him guilty on 34 counts Wednesday. With this unprecedented ruling, many Americans are left wondering about its potential implications for this November's upcoming presidential election. U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin joined News 9 This Morning to discuss. Mullin is on the campaign trail with the Senate and the Trump team and said when the news broke, he found himself disappointed in the judicial system. "Personally, for me, it was a sad day," Mullin said. "We shouldn't be doing this to our judicial system and just giving it a black eye." He said he thinks the ruling will be overturned and Trump will never face jail time. He said Democrats are using this as a political tactic to sabotage his political run. "As we all know, that doesn't keep the president or actually any person from running for political office," Mullin said. He said he thinks this will only begin to fuel Trump's supporters and donors. "This is going to backfire greatly on the Democrat Party," Mullin said. While the convictions were related to business filings, Trump has also been accused of paying off a porn star after having an affair. Mullin said he considers Trump a friend and is confident in his moral character. "Anybody that knows President Trump on a personal level understands this is a man that loves this country. He absolutely loves his family, and he loves the people, and he will do anything for it," Mullin said. He said the national media has been unfair to Trump and that they portray him in a bad light compared to other politicians such as President Barack Obama and President Joe Biden. "That doesn't fit into the national media's mindset. They always want to just go after the stuff that may be questionable and so they continue to drag his character through the mud," Mullin said. "The character I know is a man that's a solid individual that has raised good kids." Mullin said he thinks this will not affect the ballot in Oklahoma and will actually drive out more voters. "This attack on President Trump is going to drive turnout at a higher level than what we even saw in 2020. The more they go after President Trump, the more people get upset because they see that they're weaponizing our judicial system, and people want to take back this country," Mullin said. He feels the country is in a bad place under President Biden and that voters want to turn it around. "We've got to turn this ship around. It's going in the wrong direction underneath the leadership of Joe Biden, and I believe people see that and that's why people are moving toward President Trump." Mullin said.

20:: Police Pursuit With Stolen RV Ends In NW OKC Drainage Ditch

01.01.1970 01:00:00 31.05.2024 03:45:31
A pursuit with a stolen RV ended in a crash on Thursday in Northwest Oklahoma City. The suspect drove the RV off-road through a park and took a nosedive into a drainage ditch. The concrete ditch Cole Hopper, 32, crashed into was in Smitty Park near I-44 and Pennsylvania Avenue. Police said Hopper stole the RV and had crack cocaine and Fentanyl when he was arrested. “This is something that is kind of new to us or unusual for us,” said Msgt. Gary Knight, Oklahoma City Police Department. A slow-speed pursuit with the RV came to a crashing end Thursday morning. “It’s unclear exactly what this person’s plans were to do with the motorhome, but it was stolen,” said Knight. The vehicle was reportedly stolen from Camping World on the Broadway Extension. An officer spotted the motorhome near I-44 and May Avenue. “When they tried to pull it over the motorhome fled,” said Knight. Officers followed the RV on neighborhood streets. Police said Hopper went off-road into Smitty Park, through a fence, and took a nosedive into a concrete ditch.  “That obviously disabled the vehicle,” said Knight. “The driver got out and fled on foot, he was apprehended a short time later.” Police described Hopper as a career criminal. He served a prison sentence for manslaughter and racked up possession of contraband charges while in prison. Hopper has recent arrests and charges for drug possession in McClain and Cleveland Counties. Following the pursuit, Hopper was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center jail on charges of a stolen motor vehicle, eluding police, possession of drugs, and trafficking drugs. His bond was set at $37,500.

23:: Lawmakers Pass State Budget: $12.47 Billion

01.01.1970 01:00:00 30.05.2024 23:26:18
Lawmakers officially passed a state budget on Thursday. Topping out at $12.47 billion, Republican lawmakers call this a record budget. Touting the new state budget - with record savings, investments in education, and the long-awaited grocery sales tax cut, Rep. Kevin Wallace (R- District 32) said, “It really is a great budget for the state of Oklahoma and we have a record number of savings with an estimate of about $4.7 billion.” But there was debate down to the wire. The main concern coming from House Democrats was that lawmakers didn’t spend all the money they had available. They call it money - left dormant. Lawmakers also increased funding for state agencies by two percent, and the overall budget is five percent less than they spent in 2025. The budget passed overwhelmingly and wrapped up the final session of the 59th legislature. The only step left is for Governor Stitt to officially sign the budget - which would go into effect on July 1.

27:: 2025 Oklahoma State Budget Breakdown

01.01.1970 01:00:00 29.05.2024 16:16:08
After weeks of deliberation, the House and Senate have agreed on a state budget for the 2025 fiscal year. The budget is set at $12.47 billion, a $700 million decrease from last year’s budget. One of the Senate’s goals during this year’s negotiations was to put $1 billion into savings. The budget negotiations ended suddenly last week after what seemed like stalemate after stalemate. The governor told the committee Tuesday that if they could agree on the budget that day, he would not veto it. It took less than four hours for negotiations to end. A big priority for the Senate this year was an emphasis on transparency. There were a total of eight budget summits between the House, Senate and governor. The budget still has to be passed. This will happen after the Joint Committee on Appropriations meets and looks over the plans. After the budget passes out of committee, it will move to the House and Senate for approval, and then to the governor’s desk. The budget is supposed to make it to the governor’s desk by Friday.

28:: Emergency Management Provides Update On Mayes County Storm Damage

01.01.1970 01:00:00 29.05.2024 16:08:38
A deadly storm swept from Claremore, through Mayes and into Pryor Saturday. Two people were killed and many were injured in the storms. Mayes County emergency managers say damage is extensive. They estimate 50-60 homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed.  Around 24,000 residents were without power after the storms. Providers are working to replace power lines and return power to the affected areas. The Red Cross has set up a shelter in Pryor at the Mayes County Fairgrounds.

29:: Fallen Trees From Tornado In Claremore Damage Several Homes

01.01.1970 01:00:00 29.05.2024 16:06:03
Saturday night's tornado left streets on the east side of Claremore littered with uprooted trees and branches tangled in power lines. The city is without power with a lot of cleanup ahead. "I was laying in bed and when I woke up I thought it was thunder rumbling," Claremore resident, Buddy Robertson said. "Then I went outside and saw the trees down on both sides and figured it must've been a tornado." Robertson is a lifelong Claremore resident and says he’s never seen anything like this in his hometown. "As far as I know and the rumor has always been a tornado has never touched down in Claremore," he said. Saturday night's tornado did significant damage to homes and power lines as well as a horse race track and RV park east of the town. Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton says everyone is coming together to help. "We're blessed on a day like this we have help from everybody,” Walton said. He says the number one priority is cleanup. "If you got a neighbor or someone that you can go and check on maybe get their driveway clear then do that,” he said. Nearly every street on the east side of Claremore sees trees completely uprooted, exposing the earth below, including Robertson’s home. "I was grateful because it didn't go through the house, so I was really pretty lucky," he said describing the tree that fell on his home during the storm. He says he’s confident the city will come together. "Oh yeah Claremore’s a great city," he said. "When people talk about small communities and Oklahoma values and stuff like that. Nothing says it louder than people's actions," Walton added. Over 20 injuries have been reported in Claremore, but no fatalities. The American Red Cross has a shelter at the Memorial Heights Baptist Church on West Will Rogers Blvd.

30:: Wedding Ceremony Interrupted By Strong Winds, Tent Collapse In Oklahoma

01.01.1970 01:00:00 29.05.2024 16:02:43
High winds collapsed part of a wedding tent in northwest Oklahoma on Saturday. That collapse sent around 30 people to the hospital, but all are expected to be OK. There were over 100 guests in attendance to celebrate Gavin McCullough and soon-to-be Anna McCullough in Woods County on Saturday. The ceremony was in Capron, Oklahoma. The wedding party delayed the ceremony pending the weather, then the situation escalated quickly. Video from the scene showed strong wind and rain outside the wedding tent before the camera panned and then the collapse began. The McCullough family said that most people only ended up with scratches, cuts or bruises. Everyone injured has since been released from the hospital except for one person taken to OU for a punctured lung. The father of the groom, Randy McCullough, is a recently retired OHP Trooper and he thanked all the wedding guests for stepping in to help, with many of them being first responders themselves. "Once everybody jumped in, took care of each other, once those that are injured got taken care of, everybody stuck around and said what do we need to do? Before we even left that night, the mess was cleaned up," Randy said. The family said they're grateful the situation wasn't worse. Randy confirmed the bride and groom are also OK and will eventually make plans for a new ceremony.

34:: Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief Serving Communities With Tornado Damage

01.01.1970 01:00:00 30.04.2024 20:35:50
The Sulphur community is working to rebuild the heart of their city after an EF-3 tornado destroyed homes and buildings Saturday. The Coca Cola Porch is highlighting how Oklahomans are coming together and stepping up after the tornado outbreak. News 9's Jordan Ryan was in Sulphur with Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief showing us how volunteers are stepping up.  “We've got these guys here that are preparing food and getting ready to send it out to serve this community and the other communities around that need help. And we have chainsaw teams that are here that are working with homeowners,” Jason Yarbrough, state director with OBDR, said. “So right now, we've identified about 50 different homeowners that are needing help that have come through us. And so those folks are out there beginning to work on those homes and clear up that debris that they've experienced.” Clearing up storm damage can be traumatic for some homeowners. “It does bring a smile to their face when we show up on their property because we are bringing that help and that hope and a little bit of healing along the way,” Yarbrough said. The volunteers with OBDR stay on cots in local churches. “These guys don't get luxury and they don't get paid for what they do,” Yarbrough said. “They're doing this out of the love in their hearts and just an opportunity to serve.”

35:: While Oklahomans Rebuild, Sulphur Residents Face A Downtown Wiped Away In An Instant

01.01.1970 01:00:00 29.04.2024 19:40:24
As many Oklahomans sift through the rubble and rebuild their communities after severe weather devastated parts of the state, residents in Sulphur are at the beginning of a long road to recovery. The EF-3 tornado that struck Sulphur devastated the city's downtown, causing a drastic shift in the lives of 5,000 residents who call Sulphur their home. News 9 Meteorologist Lacey Swope visited the town on Monday morning to survey the extent of the damage as many residents began to wake up in the dark. Officials confirmed one person was killed and more than 30 people were hurt. News 9's Cameron Joiner gave another look at the damage and recovery efforts Monday afternoon.

36:: 'This Was The Real Deal': Tornado Devastates Ardmore Neighborhood

01.01.1970 01:00:00 29.04.2024 19:37:12
In Saturday night’s outbreak, Ardmore was hit by a tornado that ripped through one neighborhood leaving a path of destruction. Carter County is among the 12 counties declared in a state of emergency by the Governor. The city is still in the dark without power as crews work to repair power lines in the area. Plainview Estates was hit by the Ardmore tornado just before 10 p.m. Five homes were destroyed and several more have minor damage. But to this community, it’s what happened when the sun came up that matters most. "I had a feeling, I mean we've had them before, but this was the real deal," Greg Piatt, an Ardmore resident who lost his home, said. He said the tornado hit hard and fast. "Within minutes it's over," Piatt said. "You think you're going to have plenty of time and there wasn't plenty of time." Saturday night's tornado ripped the roof off his home. What was once enclosed, is now open and shows a backdrop of destruction. Piatt’s home was the first hit in Plainview Estates, and the destruction depicts the tornado's path. "The tornado just came right through here," he said, pointing to the 4 other homes destroyed behind his. "I mean they're just families that are devastated." But as the sun rose, so did help. Dozens of people came to Piatt and his neighbor's aid. Some were friends and family, some were strangers. "No, I didn't know anything about them,” Bob Edinger said. He got to Plainview Estates Sunday morning ready to lend a helping hand. "Came down and I saw all this damage over here and I had to do something," he said. He spent his entire day uncovering the treasures of someone else’s life, from letters to family photos. "Photos from their past at least as far back as when they got married," Edinger said. Left to rebuild, Piatt says it’s teaching them something valuable. "You got to love people and use things and don't get them confused," he said. Things can be replaced, people can’t. "It's really amazing. You get to experience God's blessings," Piatt said. "Someone like Bob who comes in that we don't even know just shows up and our friends texting us all night long." A community standing together through it all. No injuries were reported in Ardmore, but the American Red Cross has set up a shelter at the Christ Community Church on Mount Washington Road in Ardmore for anyone displaced by last night’s storm.

37:: 1 Dead, At Least 30 Injured After Tornado Hits Town Of Sulphur; Business District Torn Apart

01.01.1970 01:00:00 29.04.2024 19:34:45
One person is dead, at least 30 others are hurt, and about 75 homes were damaged after a tornado hit the town of Sulphur in Murray County Saturday night. The National Weather Service confirms the tornado that hit that area was rated an EF-3. Osage SkyNews 6 flew over Sulphur Sunday to get a look at the area. Businesses, homes, and public buildings all have extensive damage. City officials said that the entire business district of downtown was dramatically affected. The downtown area took a direct hit, including a bar that had about a dozen people inside Saturday night. Brian McDaniel with the City of Sulphur said they have seen a huge outpouring of support and that they are trying to coordinate volunteers to the best of their abilities. Damage can be reported at damage.ok.gov The person killed in Sulphur was a woman who was in that downtown bar when the building collapsed. The bar owner described the moment the tornado hit. “I looked and saw the windows just imploding, straight at me. And at that point, I saw the whole building coming at me. I turned and I just went down and just went next to my cabinet and curled up," said Raina Valkoun, Bar Owner. Valkoun said she was trapped for about 45 minutes until first responders could rescue her. She said she hoped they would also find the other woman alive. “I was hoping that they’d find her and she had found a breathing hole like I did. I’m hoping that she went fast. What I did was lay there, wondering if I was going to die or not die and worrying about it. I’m hoping she didn’t have that worry," Valkoun said. Police now have parts of downtown closed off from the public to prevent any looting overnight. They said they are arresting people who trespass. Dustin Payne said he's lived in Sulphur his entire life and never experienced something like this. Payne said he was home with his two kids when he got an alert that the storm was in their direct path. He and his family were trying to get to the shelter shortly after, but just didn't make it. He described the experience as very intense as he tried to keep his kids calm after a tree fell on top of their car. Payne said thankfully his family is unharmed, and they are taking time to pick up the pieces.  Classes in Sulphur are closed on Monday. The superintendent said classes will likely be canceled longer to allow district officials to asses damage on school campuses. The superintendent said the high school is without electricity and every school bus has damage. The Red Cross also has a shelter open for families who don't have a place to stay.

38:: Downtown Sulphur Closed To Prevent Looting Authorities Say

01.01.1970 01:00:00 29.04.2024 19:32:02
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Murray County Sheriff's Office said they're putting a strict lockdown on the downtown area to prevent looting. Authorities said anyone in the downtown area will be arrested after 10:30 p.m., no exceptions. People in Sulphur are recovering Sunday morning after a tornado caused significant damage to the area. Andy Freeman the Sulphur City Manager says at least 20 people have been injured at this time, but they are still doing search and rescue. During a press conference Sunday afternoon, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt said the damage to Sulphur was the "worst damage he's seen" during his tenure as governor, and said one person was confirmed to have been killed as a result of the tornado. The Murray County Sheriff's Office recommends avoiding the area as they assess damage. ---- *ATTENTION PUBLIC* DO NOT COME TO SULPHUR UNLESS YOU ARE A FIRST RESPONDER!!! AGAIN DO NOT COME TO SULPHUR!!! Stay at home and do not come to LOOK! Those who are, you are making things difficult for all emergency personal to do their job! Sulphur is currently very congested. Reunification is at CrossWay Rec Center church.Do not call 911 unless it’s an actual emergency! Please be respectful and let emergency personal do their job!! --- Sulphur Public Schools Superintendent Matt Holder released the following statement on social media Sunday: Dear Bulldog Family: Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with our students, staff, friends and neighbors as we face the devastating loss and damage caused by last night’s tornado. We appreciate the emergency personnel who urgently responded to help our community, the utility employees who are working to restore service, and the countless volunteers who have offered their assistance during this difficult time. Our greatest priority is the safety and well-being of our students, staff and all Sulphur residents. Currently, we are working closely with city and county emergency management officials to determine how to best move forward. We know our fellow community members have experienced injuries, loss and destruction to their homes and places of business. Most are also still without electricity and internet access, including some of our schools. Classes will be closed tomorrow – and likely longer – to allow district officials to assess damage on school campuses and to give families time together. We will communicate more about school plans when additional information is available. We know it is important for students to return to school as quickly as it is safe and possible to do so. Currently, we know the following about the condition of our school sites: As of this letter the HS is without electricity. Several sites, including Sulphur High School, have water damage. Every bus in our transportation fleet has been severely damaged. Most campuses and athletic fields have loose debris, broken tree limbs and downed fences. We are grateful to the many community partners and area school districts who have offered support over the last few hours. This includes Davis Public Schools, which will provide two school buses to our district so that our track team can attend regional competition in Madill tomorrow. Coaches will send information about the competition to participants today. We are #SulphurStrong, and the faith, resilience and unity of our community will help us overcome this tragedy. If you need immediate assistance and support, the Red Cross has resources available for residents at Crossway Baptist Church on Broadway Avenue. Our school team will also work to assist families in any way that we can. This is a close-knit community, and we take pride in caring for one another. I know we will come together during this great time of need. Every day – but especially today – thank you for your support of Sulphur Public Schools and the Sulphur community. Sincerely, Matt Holder Superintendent Murray County Emergency Management reported a significant amount of damage in Sulphur and numerous injuries. The Red Cross opened a shelter at Crossway Church, 2108 W Broadway Ave., Sulphur. The Murray County Sheriff's Office said that the Crossway Church is also serving as a reunification center. Gov. Kevin Stitt released the following statement: “My prayers are with those who lost loved ones as tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma last night. Thank you to Oklahoma Emergency Management and those who have worked through the night to keep Oklahomans safe and have worked to clear debris and assess damage.”

40:: 'Pure Devastation' House Speaker Charles McCall Reflects On Tornado Damage In Sulphur

01.01.1970 01:00:00 29.04.2024 19:28:14
A community was left in ruins after tornados ripped through the state over the weekend. Officials confirm one person was killed and dozens more are hurt in one of the hardest hit areas, Sulphur. House Speaker Charles McCall, who oversees District 22, which includes Sulphur, visited the town on Sunday and spoke with News 9 about the damage in the community. McCall said it was surreal to walk around the town, which once had landmarks standing for decades, and see the destruction in person. "The gravity of the situation, the pictures don't really do it justice," McCall said. "Pure rubble, streetlights pulled out of the ground, including the concrete that anchored them in the ground, things snapped, it is just pure devastation." He said most of the town is beyond repair, but the people and first responders of Murray County and House District 22 have stepped up. "Oklahomans, they're very tough and resilient people; I was very impressed," McCall said. "They were there working search and rescue, clearing debris and I'm very thankful." McCall said there has been a tremendous outpouring of support from several resources, including local churches and companies like Walmart and Amazon. "The largest church in Sulphur has opened up their facilities for families who have lost their homes and lost everything; companies like Walmart and Amazon that reached out to me personally yesterday and said 'What can we do?' and so I think they're sending gift cards so people can order things and it can be shipped directly to them," McCall. He said that restoration will take some time, but families will be able to put their lives back together eventually. He also shared his condolences to those who lost their lives in the damage. State officials are asking anyone affected by storms to report damages at damage.ok.gov, which will help emergency managers coordinate recovery.

42:: Sulphur Business Owner Recalls Moments Storm Destroyed Business And Trapped Her Under Rubble

01.01.1970 01:00:00 29.04.2024 19:24:12
As storms rolled into downtown Sulphur, a local business owner said was fighting for her life, as well as the lives of her customers. Raina’s Sports Lounge owner Raina Valkoun said it was a typical Saturday night at her bar with many of her regulars, but in an instant, the walls began to cave in around them. While more than a dozen people were inside Raina’s Sports Lounge when the building began to collapse, Valkoun said she was buried under five feet of debris. After being pinned for 45 minutes, first responders thought they rescued everyone, but Valkoun said one of her long time friends and customers didn't make it. “I was hoping that they’d find her and she had found a breathing hole like I did, I’m hoping that she went fast," Valkoun said. "What I did was lay there wondering if I was going to die or not die...I’m hoping she didn’t have that worry." Now, Raina is heartbroken by the loss of her friend and bar, but thankful to see another day. “I went around and have seen these homes, I see people but they are alive," Valkoun said. State leaders say around 30 people were injured from this particular storm, and Valkoun said about half of those people were in her bar.

News 9 was joined by Aaron Cooper with OG&E to talk about what the process will look like to get power restored to those impacted by the severe weather. “We have about 1200 people now on the ground working these storms. As they finish up in one area, they move to where the damage is the most severe,” Cooper said. “Our crews live and work in these communities. These are their friends and neighbors. They are dedicated, committed.” The responding crews are dealing with all kinds of storm damage. “It's been very significant, especially those areas in southern Oklahoma. We've seen broken poles, uh, broken cross arms, lines down,” Cooper said. “There were flooded roads, closed roads, debris everywhere. Sometimes that can slow things down a little bit. But our crews have been out there since the storms rolled in on Saturday night working to get everyone back and connected in some areas.”
