Africa grapples with poverty, conflict, political instability, and environmental degradation, compelling many to seek better opportunities elsewhere. However, amidst these adversities, Christians in Africa are beacons of hope, actively engaged in addressing societal injustices and alleviating human suffering.
Figures like Archbishop Desmond Tutu – who worked beyond South Africa, influencing the struggle for justice and reconciliation across the African continent, Nelson Mandela - a revered South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and political leader, Fr. Michael Lapsley - Anglican priest and social justice activist known for his advocacy against apartheid, Bishop Abel Muzorewa - a Zimbabwean Methodist bishop and politician who played a significant role in the country's struggle for independence from colonial rule, Archbishop Benjamin Nwankiti - a Nigerian Anglican bishop and social activist who campaigned against corruption, poverty, and injustice in Nigeria and known for his outspokenness on political and social issues, advocating for the rights of the poor and marginalized, Anglican Archbishop John Kofi Amissah in Ghana who played a significant role in advocating for social justice, human rights, and national liberation. One significant aspect of the resurrection narrative that often comes to mind is the role of women in Christianity and their place in church leadership. Throughout history, the church hierarchy has predominantly been male-dominated, and the ordination of women remains a point of contention in many denominations. While strides have been made, the representation of women in clergy positions still lags behind that of men. In my own church, though we've made progress with nearly a hundred women in clergy roles, it pales in comparison to the roughly a thousand male clergy members. It's noteworthy that we've only ordained one and only female bishop. In the Anglican Communion, while we celebrate the presence of hundreds of female bishops, the prospect of a woman serving as Archbishop of Canterbury or York remains a point of anticipation. However, despite these advancements, it's disheartening that many individuals, including women, still harbor reservations about women leading worship, presiding over the Eucharist, and leading church communities often succumbing to deeply ingrained stereotypes and biases.

Sa ating ebanghelyo ngayon ay makikita natin na itinuring ng mga pariseo na makasalanan itong ipinanganak na bulag, pati nanay niya at pati na rin si Jesus na tumulong sa kanya. Katangi-an ng mag pariseo ang nagmamalinis. Parang katulad din ng marami sa atin na nagmamalinis at hinahagisan pa ng putik ang iba para maging masama ang tingin sa kanila ng mga iba pa.
Ang bulag na tinulongan ni Jesus upang makakita ay nilait at tiniwalag ng mga pariseo sa halip na kanilang paniwalaan.
In conclusion sa kwento natin sa Ebanghelyo ngayon ay sinabi ni Jesus,
“Naparito ako sa mundong ito upang humatol, at nang sa gayo'y makakita ang mga bulag at mabulag naman ang mga nakakakita.” Narinig ito ng ilang Pariseong naroon at siya'y kanilang tinanong, “Ibig mo bang sabihi'y mga bulag din kami?” Sumagot si Jesus, “Kung kayo nga'y bulag, hindi sana kayo hahatulang maysala. Ngunit dahil sinasabi ninyong nakakakita kayo, nananatili kayong maysala.”
Of course, we know that Jesus here is talking about blindness that is beyond physical illness. It is the blindness caused by the hypocrisy and self-interest of the Pharisees for the status quo and remaining in power.
For them, the one who healed the sinner was also a sinner. Over and over in the passage, the Pharisees call Jesus a sinner (as well as the man who was healed). For the Pharisees, healing on the Sabbath was a sin. So was making mud! They were totally and wilfully blind to the gifts of grace and healing before their very eyes.
Later, they would sooner collaborate with the Roman empire to have Jesus murdered than open their eyes and join him in sharing their gifts and fighting alongside the common people. Because Jesus is a sinner, and the wage of sin is death!

Ngayon ay kailangan din nating tingnan at pagninilayan ang mga sumusunod:
1. Tayo ba ay naging bulag din at di natin nakikita ang mga bagay na dapat nating Nakita sa ating paligid?
2. Tayo kaya ay minsan nang naging katulad din ng mag pariseo na di man physically bulag ay nabubulag-bulagan sa mga pangyayari sa ating community at sa ating lipunan?
3. Baka naman ay tayo yong mga taong parang madali lamang manglait sa mga taong mayroong opinion at paniniwala na hindi umayon sa atin.
4. Baka naman tayo rin ay katulad ng pariseo na nagtatakwil sa mga taong sa tingin natin ay yumaynig sa anumang poder at kayamanang mayroon tayo.
5. Ang pinakasimple ay… baka naman tayoyong mas madali o nakasanayan lang talagang manira ng ating kapwa.
Mga kapatid, sana ay maging handa at magsusumikap tayong magkaroon ng pagbabago sa buhay natin dulot ng ating pagsasabuhay ng mga katuruan sa panahon ng kwaresma – sa ating pagdarasal, pagsisisi, pag-aayuno, pagmumuni-muni (pagninilay), pagbibigay (almsgiving, gift-giving). Ang pagbabagong sana maliit man ay maging consistent at improving everyday towards becoming a good and mature Christians and sons and daughters of God. Sa pangalan ng ama, at ng Anak, at ng Espiritu Santo. Amen.

Ano ba ang kwaresma? Ang kwaresma ay ang apatnapung araw ng pagdarasal, pagsisisi, pag-aayuno, pagmumuni-muni (pagninilay), pagbibigay (almsgiving, gift-giving). Ito ay nagsisimula sa Miyerkules ng Abo or Miércoles de ceniza. Na ngayon taon ay mula ika-22 ng Pebrero hanggang sa ika-1 ng Abril. Bagamat ang tumatatak sa marami ay ang pag-aayuno kailangan din talaga nating gawin ang iba pang katuruan ng simbahan – pagsisisi, pagninilay, pagbibigay or pagtulong sa mga nangangailangan. At di rin dapat na ginagawa lang ang mga ito sa panahon lang ng kwaresma.

Epiphany means manifestation, introduction, appearance or to let it be known. The season after Christmas introduces the born child in a manger, in Bethlehem is the messiah. Today the last Sunday of Epiphany is the most glorious introduction of Jesus. The church assigned this a Transfiguration Sunday, the last Sunday after Epiphany and right before the beginning of lent on Ash Wednesday.
The story of Jesus’ transfiguration is the peak of the season of Epiphany which introduces Jesus in a most glorious way. Dazzling white, His face shone like a sun, and a bright cloud overshadowed them on the mountaintop. Then the appearance of Moses and Elijah who were long-time dead but are great and famous personalities in the faith history of the Jewish people. What a great show! Or What a great description and introduction by Matthew and Gospel writers.
The appearance of Moses and Elijah means that Jesus is the completion and fulfillment of the law and the prophecies as Jesus claims in Matthew 5:17.
Not seeing the point and overwhelmed by this very glorious, dramatic, cinematic event they just witnessed and because of human tendencies, Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
Immediately, however, Peter was corrected and redirected to the point of this glorious occasion. In verse 5, it says, “While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud, a voice said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; with him, I am well pleased; listen to him!’"
It was like saying, “Hey, Peter, Jesus, your master is really the Messiah that you and the Jewish people are waiting for so long and so, instead of clinging to that scrupulous idea of building houses here and staying and living in this mountaintop, what you must do is to listen to him.
Human nature leads people to not see the point.
Many people are trying hard to go and stay up above and do not want to go down- Then they have become ivory towers – the people in power in high positions and strata of society who are so privileged, in seclusion, and separated from the facts and practicalities of the real world. In everything they do, their motivation is the question of “what do I get out of doing something?”
These people unfortunately are also in the church individually and in running the church collectively. They run the church as an institution and their agenda is to defend it and its existence. So, they ended up defending the agenda of the institutional church agenda over and above the agenda of the people who is the church in the real sense. Yes, they have programs and funds for the poor and the needy, and everything they do is guided by the question, “what does the institution get in doing things?” They are using the poor and the malady of the people so they will get more for themselves – for their own interests.
Listen to him.
Listening is not only hearing. It is acting and responding to what you have heard. As the lyric of the song ‘sound of silence’, “people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening, people writing songs that voices never share.”
We do not need to repeat saying what we heard to prove that we are listening. As the saying goes, action speaks louder than words. Peter and the apostles proclaimed Jesus and the Gospel.
In the Acts of the Apostles, we can find them doing what they heard and learned from Jesus: 1) (4:32-35) 32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need. 2) (11:27-29) 27 Some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch during this time. 28 One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.) 29 The disciples, as each one was able, decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea.
Today, we are also challenged to listen to Jesus. Listening not only through our ears but also by seeing the situation of the people and feeling their loneliness and poverty and hardships in life and acting in response to what we have listened to. Amen.

Panginoong Diyos, umaasa kami sa iyo para sa aming mga buhay mismo, at umaasa rin kami sa mga mandaragat upang matugunan ang marami sa aming pang-araw-araw na pangangailangan. Patuloy mo sana silang bantayan upang maging ligtas sa panganib, kahirapan at sakuna alang-alang sa kanilang mga pamilya’t mahal sa buhay at para sa bayan.
Panginoon, nahihirapan po ng lubos sa di-patas na pagtrato ang aming mga mandaragat lalung-lalo na sa sahud at patakarang kontrakwal, diskriminasyon sa lahi at maging sa kasarian. Ang aming mga pinunong-bayan ay mas piniling panigan ang gahiganteng alon ng mga ahensyang ganid sa ganansya. Sampalin mo sana ng katarungan ang mga ganid na ito at tulunganmo kaming lansagin ang mga di-patas at di-makatarungang patakarang ito na umiiral laban sa mga mandaragat.
Panginoong Diyos, maging timon ka sana ng aming mga mandaragat na nagpapanatili sa kanila sa tuwid na landas. Maging sinag ka sana nila na sumusuporta sa mga oras ng matinding pagsubok. Puspusin nawa ng iyong Espiritu ang kanilang mga paglayag sa bawat araw, at panatilihing malakas ang mga katawan upang sila ay makapagtampisaw nang matatag sa paglalakbay sa buhay. Ito ang aming samo’t dalangin sa pangalan ni Hesukristong kaisa namin at kaisa ninyo Ama at ng Espiritu Santo, buhay at naghahari magpakailanman. AMEN.

The search officially was conducted more than an hour after the police were there in their compound. All the members of the family were commanded to stay outside the house while several police officers in civilian were observed to be going in and coming out of the house before the house was officially searched. A hand grenade, ammunition, and an old pistol were then found in Aldeem's room. it is unbelievable that Aldeem possessed such items in their house. Earlier on, Aldeem was already subjected to red-tagging. He is a musician and his music tells how Christians and people should look for the welfare of all people, for peace, justice, and respect for human dignity. He is living out the Christian mandate in serving the least, the lost, and the last of God's people - the prophetic ministry of the Church. He is not only singing it but also doing it in the best way he can. FREE ALDEEM NOW!
