“I am the true vine, and my father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruits.” (John)

“Those who say, “I love God,” and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen.” (1 John)

Bearing fruit in loving our fellow human beings, whom we can see, encapsulates a fundamental aspect of our Christian faith and practice. In John 15:1-8, Jesus employs the metaphor of the vine and branches to elucidate the essential connection between believers and Himself. He emphasizes that true spiritual growth and productivity stem from a deep, intimate relationship with Him. This growth is manifested in tangible outcomes, symbolized by bearing fruit. This fruit represents not only the internal transformation of believers, characterized by virtues like love, joy, and peace, but also our external actions of service, compassion, and making disciples. In essence, bearing fruit in this context encompasses both our personal holiness and our active engagement in fulfilling the Great Commission – go and make disciples.

In our Christian discipleship journey, the call to bear fruit in loving our fellow human beings remains an enduring mandate—a call that reverberates through the corridors of Scripture and echoes in the lives of believers throughout history. From the teachings of Jesus in John 15 to the exhortations of the apostle John in his first epistle, and finally, to the practical example of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8, the message is clear: authentic faith is inseparable from selfless love. As we heed this call, embracing love as the hallmark of our Christian identity, we participate in the ongoing work of God's kingdom, bringing light to darkness, hope to despair, and reconciliation to division. May we, therefore, go forth with renewed fervor and commitment, bearing fruit in loving our fellow human beings, and thereby glorifying God and extending His love to all.
