1:: Barrell Bourbon Batch 034 - REVIEW - Is this Blended Bourbon Worth $100?
01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 22.06.2023 · 16:12:50 ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· Barrell Craft Spirits latest blended bourbon product, Barrell Bourbon Batch 034, is on shelves and ready for review! This batch follows the widely lauded batch 033. I loved that one so this bottle has big shoes to fill.
This bourbon is a blend of four straight bourbon whiskies distilled and aged in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana for 6, 8, 10, and 15 years. It is cask strength / barrel proof coming in at 114.62 proof (57.31% ABV).
At around $100, this isn't a bourbon that you can just pull from the shelf whenever the mood strikes. So is this something special? Or just a so-so blend that's not worth that expense?

Finished bourbons can be a bit tricky, but Lux Row Distillers and John Rempe have a pretty good track record with their Blood Oath releases. There's some nicely aged bourbon in this blend, but I started the bottle worried that the sherry would overtake any subtle notes imparted by the extra time in oak.

Remus Repeal Reserve makes a splash each year it comes out due to the often highly aged bourbon used in its blend. Ultra aged bourbon from MGP isn't easy to find, and when you do find it, it's usually not cheap!
The 2022 release, Remus Repeal Reserve VI, comes on the heels of the highly touted Remus Repeal Reserve V, which landed on many whiskey drinkers' short lists for bourbon of the year in 2021. VI is blended with some younger whiskeys than V, but does that make for a lesser experience? And is it worth the $100 or so you'll need to pay if you're lucky enough to find this around MSRP?

The Bardstown Bourbon Company Origin Series Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon (black label) and Kentucky Straight Bourbon (white label). Both releases are 6-years old and come in at or just under 100 proof. The Bottled-in-Bond has a wheated mash bill while the Straight bourbon has a high rye mash bill.
Unlike most new releases more than three years old from newer distilleries, both of these bourbons are coming in at a manageable price point of around $50. Can these two bourbons compete to be the new kings of value? I nose, taste, score, and grade them both to find out!
