 “It was very small, thank God!” says Stefan Johansson, the disbelief and relief still in his voice 30 years after the fact. “Even so, another couple of feet to the left. No, less. “I had no time to react. None. The signal from my brain to brake didn’t even reach my foot it happened that quickly. I was doing 170mph over a brow and the deer’s just sat in the middle of the road.” It was during Friday’s first practice session for the 1987 Austrian Grand Prix that Sweden’s ‘Little Leif’ met the local fauna on the approach to Rindtkurve. “It tore off the left-front suspension – there were four gaping holes where the pick-up points had been – and that corner carried back and sliced off the sidepod and rear suspension. The whole left side was pretty much gone. “It was morning and the grass was moist. In those conditions you accelerate when you leave the track. But there was quite a long run-off and so I had plenty of time to think about it. I prefer accidents when you spin and – boof! – you’re in the wall.” Though his McLaren MP4/3 was wrecked and he’d broken a rib, Johansson knew that he was lucky to be alive. The poor deer was not so fortunate. Johansson: “Apparently it had been walking around for a while. So it was a mystery why the session hadn’t been stopped.” Team boss Ron Dennis was furious, and the pilfering of salvageable parts from the wreckage further soured his mood. As he had after his Bambi carambolage – he was fifth-fastest in Saturday’s wet session – he exhibited the spirit that epitomised his career: “That’s just what you do: get back in it and get back on it. Hostess Karen Deblitz, a self-confessed Anglophile - "I always tell people I'm Swiss/German, with an English heart!" - is an accomplished musician with two albums to her credit. "I was inspired by punk rock when I was 15; bands like The Clash and The Ramones. But I also liked '60s girl groups, like The Shangri-Las and The Supremes. I started out in 1982 as lead singer in a three-girl group called Chin Chin". She plays bass guitar, pedal steel and a bit of mandolin, and with former boyfriend, Ernest Maeschi, formed a folk band that played gigs with The Pogues (in their post-Shane McGowan phase) in Switzerland. Now they play together in Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited. Their first album, Lost TV Themes, comprised self-penned parodies of typical soundtracks. The second is another electronic instrumental, The Fluid Soundbox, which includes a track dedicated to Johnny Herbert. "Basically Ernest writes the songs,'" says Karen, "and then I suggest changes here and there, altering the drum grooves and the base lines, the percussion, adding my stuff to them so they become a mixture. It's an instinctive process." Blending two careers isn't easy, especially as F1 always takes precedence. "We don't do any concerts but during the winter, when the season is over, I work in the studio. Once the season starts, the music stops! I love F1 and the Red Bull Sauber Petronas team is full of really good people. There was a pastoral feel to the old Österreichring. Nestled in the foothills of the Styrian Alps, its run-offs were lush meadows, its spectator banks speckled with wild flowers. One half-expected Bambi to gambol across the track… “It was very small, thank God!” says Stefan Johansson, the disbelief and relief still in his voice 30 years after the fact. “Even so, another couple of feet to the left. No, less. “I had no time to react. None. The signal from my brain to brake didn’t even reach my foot it happened that quickly. I was doing 170mph over a brow and the deer’s just sat in the middle of the road.” It was during Friday’s first practice session for the 1987 Austrian Grand Prix that Sweden’s ‘Little Leif’ met the local fauna on the approach to Rindtkurve. “It tore off the left-front suspension – there were four gaping holes where the pick-up points had been – and that corner carried back and sliced off the sidepod and rear suspension. The whole left side was pretty much gone. “It was morning and the grass was moist. In those conditions you accelerate when you leave the track. But there was quite a long run-off and so I had plenty of time to think about it. I prefer accidents when you spin and – boof! – you’re in the wall.” Though his McLaren MP4/3 was wrecked and he’d broken a rib, Johansson knew that he was lucky to be alive. The poor deer was not so fortunate. Johansson: “Apparently it had been walking around for a while. So it was a mystery why the session hadn’t been stopped.” Team boss Ron Dennis was furious, and the pilfering of salvageable parts from the wreckage further soured his mood. As he had after his Bambi carambolage – he was fifth-fastest in Saturday’s wet session – he exhibited the spirit that epitomised his career: “That’s just what you do: get back in it and get back on it. But there's another one, 'Something for Johnny' and it was created by the band Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited for their 1998 album 'The Fluid Soundbox' (for the full album: https://open.spotify.com/intl-fr/album/3l3ksLB0qQpRXy4Tov3VsC?si=O4kOlFFwS-eiXkhR6_4tiA ). One of SSSU band member was Karen Deblitz, hostess in the Sauber F1 team for which Johnny drive from 1996 to 1998. Hostess Karen Deblitz, a self-confessed Anglophile - "I always tell people I'm Swiss/German, with an English heart!" - is an accomplished musician with two albums to her credit. "I was inspired by punk rock when I was 15; bands like The Clash and The Ramones. But I also liked '60s girl groups, like The Shangri-Las and The Supremes. I started out in 1982 as lead singer in a three-girl group called Chin Chin". She plays bass guitar, pedal steel and a bit of mandolin, and with former boyfriend, Ernest Maeschi, formed a folk band that played gigs with The Pogues (in their post-Shane McGowan phase) in Switzerland. Now they play together in Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited. Their first album, Lost TV Themes, comprised self-penned parodies of typical soundtracks. The second is another electronic instrumental, The Fluid Soundbox, which includes a track dedicated to Johnny Herbert. "Basically Ernest writes the songs,'" says Karen, "and then I suggest changes here and there, altering the drum grooves and the base lines, the percussion, adding my stuff to them so they become a mixture. It's an instinctive process." Blending two careers isn't easy, especially as F1 always takes precedence. "We don't do any concerts but during the winter, when the season is over, I work in the studio. Once the season starts, the music stops! I love F1 and the Red Bull Sauber Petronas team is full of really good people. The music, though, gives me an important second interest in my life." #f1 #retrof1

Emmanuel Collard who was also testing (he had driven the JS45 on the 17th) for Prost as possible replacement for Panis, completed 52 laps with a best of 1m16.62. McLaren and Ferrari were trying out different fuel loads and set-ups for the race. Ferrari was also testing a new front wing. Giancarlo Fisichella sprained his ankle during a friendly soccer match on Tuesday. He had it looked at in the hospital, but it was not serious. It did feel a little sore however so he did not do many laps today. -Friday June 19, 1998 (From: http://www.atlasf1.com/news/1998/720.htm) Heinz-Harald Frentzen was rushed to a hospital in Nevers today after being knocked unconscious in a major crash with the tyre barrier, after sliding at 200mph. The track stewards pulled the German out of his wrecked Williams and he was rushed immediately to the hospital. Medical check ups revealed Frentzen had no internal injuries, but after regainging concious he complained about neck and back aches, and was therefore hospitalized for overnight checks. In a different incident, which occured shortly before HHF crashed his Williams, Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher also spun his car and hit a tyre barrier. The impact was strong enough to totally wreck the Ferrari's front, but Schumacher was luckier than his fellow countryman and left the incident unhurt. Earlier reports, coming from a local French news agency, as if Schumacher and Frentzen had actually crashed into eachother, turned out to be false and aparently a result of misunderstanding.
