media:description>Waiting is not an easy task or skill in a world of instant gratification. What makes it even harder, teaching the concept of waiting to an autistic kid with a sensory processing and language disorders. What makes it even harder than that? Knowing that the wait is for something that will help with sensory regulation. If I had it my way as a parent, I would instantly make the water warm enough to swim in... Right now. Problem is, that is not realistic.

media:description>Giving our daughter eyedrops is a challenge. She has autism and sensory processing disorder so it is definitely harder on her than it is on us. The key to it all is staying calm for her and making sure not to make the situation more stressful. Easier said than done, but it works.

media:description>You know that saying, but first, let me overreact. Yea, that might be me.
One of the questions I asked a ton early on because of parent worry... Will my autistic and non verbal daughter have issues when her baby teeth start coming out? Will she try to put it back because that is where it belongs? Will she try to take more out? Will her sensory processing disorder make losing teeth really difficult? What if this... What if that...
Now that we are through lots of teeth and lots of years, I can tell you. It will probably be okay. Every kid will probably react to baby teeth coming out differently so my best advice? Try not to worry and just be there for your kid. That usually works.

media:description>We are always encouraging our autistic daughter to stim when she needs to for regulating her senses. Some stims can be physically harmful which we re-direct to a stim that is more appropriate.
What is stimming? According to Google: Stimming, or self-stimulating behavior, is the repetition of physical movements, sounds, words, or moving objects. It can involve one part of the body, the entire body, or an object. Stimming can serve a variety of purposes, including: Reducing anxiety and calming the individual, Coping with sensory overload, and Relieving physical discomfort.

media:description>Shopping with our daughter is always an adventure. Lately she has really been into manikins. She appears to be naming them but we don't know for sure.
There was a time not too long ago that we were hesitant to take her shopping. Her OCD was getting really tough on her in these environments. It was important for us to keep going and to keep working through it. She is back to enjoying our shopping trips and not getting stuck on compulsions.

media:description>I love showing our daughter's progress school for a few reasons. One of them is to show that given the right supports, accommodations, and team; kids that are non-speaking with autism and intellectual disability can thrive and succeed. If you look back on our videos back when we first started this social media journey, you will see how impressive her progress is.
We are continuously so impressed with her progress and her team. This is our daughter's success story and this should be a common thing for special education kids, not just a rare occurrence. I want our story to be a message of hope for parents of kids with disabilities.

media:description>It is not because we don't have one. Morning routine during the school year does generally stay the same. Someday I will wake up early enough to show you.
We want to make sure we don't do the same routine for too long to promote flexibility. Weekends and snow days help with that. There is a balance and going into too much routine creates rigidity. Not enough routine creates sensory regulation issues.

media:description>Is this what it's like to have your kid argue with you? I feel like everyday parents can get frustrated when their kids argue. For me, arguing with my kid about our schedule was a milestone; an exciting moment. Of course I am not going to react in a way that encourages her to argue, this was just a moment in time that I will internally celebrate.

media:description>Don't worry! I did not include popping noises in this video!
Balloons popping can be very loud and startling. To our daughter, not so much. The interesting thing is, she is autistic and sensitive to noise. She wears noise cancelling headphones when out in public.
Public noises are very different. The loud pop is controlled by her and is just one loud noise. Out in public, there is so much unorganized background noise which all has one volume for her, loud. This is why she loves loud music, but needs headphones at a sporting event. Organized controlled sound is great. The random noises in a crowd or restaurant is much different, very overwhelming..

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 25.04.2024 · 23:00:15 ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· Waiting is not an easy task or skill in a world of instant gratification.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 24.04.2024 · 23:09:16 ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· Giving our daughter eyedrops is a challenge. She has autism and sensory processing disorder so it is definitely harder on her than it is on us. The key to it all is staying calm for her and making sure not to make the situation more stressful. Easier said than done, but it works.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 16.04.2024 · 22:00:27 ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· You know that saying, but first, let me overreact.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 05.04.2024 · 03:24:07 ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· We are always encouraging our autistic daughter to stim when she needs to for regulating her senses.

There was a time not too long ago that we were hesitant to take her shopping. Her OCD was getting really tough on her in these environments. It was important for us to keep going and to keep working through it. She is back to enjoying our shopping trips and not getting stuck on compulsions.

We want to make sure we don't do the same routine for too long to promote flexibility. Weekends and snow days help with that. There is a balance and going into too much routine creates rigidity. Not enough routine creates sensory regulation issues.

Our daughter seems to be getting more comfortable with this dad daughter date night environment. Waiting in lines was not a problem (normally causing disregulation) and she not only tolerated a food she normally pushes away, like the whole plate so that it is out of her reach, she picked up a known food that she has aversion with and tried it.
This goes to show that so much goes into the eating experience with our autistic daughter. The environment as a whole can play a part in how she interacts with food she normally avoids.
Overall, this was a fantastic night.

One thing I noticed over the last year, our daughter (she has been diagnosed with autism and intellectual disability) has found friends that accept her and love being around her. We did not facilitate this, it just happened.
I believe that it all starts with influence. Her friends treat her with equality, kindness, and inclusion. Where do kids learn these things? From their parents, guardians, family, teachers, and peers. I personally do not think people with autism have social issues, I think society has acceptance, equality, and inclusion issues. I believe it is important to share these real life moments. Maybe it will help someone out there in the world.
Last year when she went missing at a county fair, it was a very long 15 minutes of frantic searching and imagining worst case scenario. There is that one fear that sticks with you. The one that says, this is it.
We usually don't bring Norton (our daughter's service dog) when we go places with her friends because we don't want to hinder those relationships. Braylee is piggybacking, hugging, etc and that is impossible with her service dog attached. However, Norton may have prevented what happened that day.
Since then, we have invested in Angel Sense which is a GPS tracker and have gotten better with keeping her close in public places. Hopefully we never experience something like this ever again.
I wanted to share this to relate with other parents and to pass on important information. Maybe you are organizing a large event. Maybe this will help you think about protocols and procedures that need to be put in place if a child goes missing. #weefam #autism #disabilityawareness
