Looks like we have a rules myth to clear up. Article: Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/closecallsports Discord: https://discord.gg/eFXWr7yHWM Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CloseCallSports Twitter: https://twitter.com/CloseCallSports Official Baseball Rule 5.09(b)(11) makes no mention of which way to turn, but instead states, "Any runner is out when they fail to return at once to first base after overrunning or oversliding that base. If they attempt to run to second they are out when tagged..." The phrase "if they attempt to run to second" is interpreted as a physical indication from the batter-runner that they are attempting to advance beyond first base. For most plays of this nature—and true for the Scott play here as well—this manifests by a sudden shuffle of the feet as the player turns his body and moves toward the next base. Simply turning into fair territory or to the left as opposed to turning rightward toward foul territory is not on its own ample evidence with which to call a runner out (when tagged) after losing overrun protection at first base./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="502" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="14254"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:4xUCr1sqIk0/id> yt:videoId>4xUCr1sqIk0/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UC9GWtLCWRpJHD0ViUYeNQ8Q/yt:channelId> title>E17 - Dave Martinez Ejected by Two Umpires (Cory Blaser, Todd Tichenor) Over Uncalled Obstruction/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xUCr1sqIk0"/> author> name>CloseCallSports/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9GWtLCWRpJHD0ViUYeNQ8Q/uri> /author> published>2024-04-20T03:45:42+00:00/published> updated>2024-04-22T00:01:07+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>E17 - Dave Martinez Ejected by Two Umpires (Cory Blaser, Todd Tichenor) Over Uncalled Obstruction/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/4xUCr1sqIk0?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i1.ytimg.com/vi/4xUCr1sqIk0/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>HP Umpire Cory Blaser ejected Nationals manager Dave Martinez for arguing 2B Umpire Nate Tomlinson's obstruction no-call [out call] on runner Ildemaro Vargas' unsuccessful stolen base attempt. 01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 22.04.2024 · 19:30:07 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· When MLB made base blocking obstruction a point of emphasis prior to the 2024 season, we saw several POE-related calls in Spring Training. But as the season progresses, obstruction calls have decreased, leaving some otherwise-obstruction calls going unanswered. Why? 8:: Out for Turning the Wrong Way? Busting the Myth After Batter-Runner Scott Loses Overrun Protection

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 21.04.2024 · 23:05:00 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· After Philadelphia tagged out Cardinals batter-runner Victor Scott in St Louis, TV speculated he "turn[ed] the wrong way" after hitting an infield single and sprinting past first base. Simply turning into fair territory or to the left as opposed to turning rightward toward foul territory is not on its own ample evidence with which to call a runner out (when tagged) after losing overrun protection at first base.

9:: E17 - Dave Martinez Ejected by Two Umpires (Cory Blaser, Todd Tichenor) Over Uncalled Obstruction

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 20.04.2024 · 03:45:42 ··· ···

··· ··· ··· ··· 1B Umpire Andy Fletcher ejected Cubs 1B Coach Mike Napoli and HP Umpire Erich Bacchus ejected Cubs manager David Ross after a bizarre strike two call sequence in extra innings. RULES DIFFERENCE! In college and high school, the NCAA/NFHS rulesets would have put batter-runner Contreras OUT for runner's lane interference because at those levels, altering the fielder's throw IS grounds for an RLI call. At the pro level though, it is NOT and requires the catcher's throw have a reasonable chance to retire the runner. Close call! The ejection for strike two to Cubs batter Dansby Swanson in the 11th featured both a strike three mechanic given on strike two (oops!) plus a low-zone pitch that was dropped by the catcher and looked worse than it was (the computer had it as a strike as well).

17:: Umpire Isabella Robb Ejects Tarpons Manager Rachel Balkovec in First All-Woman Ejection in Minors

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 04.07.2023 · 21:25:37 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Minor League umpire Isabella Robb's ejection of Tampa Tarpons (Single-A Yankees) manager Rachel Balkovec is the first all-woman ejection in affiliated baseball, it also featured a key play concerning a pulled foot at first base as well as crew consultation to help with this call. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2023/07/umpire-isabella-robbs-ejection-of.html Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CloseCallSports Twitter: https://twitter.com/CloseCallSports Discord: https://discord.gg/eFXWr7yHWM With a runner on first, Tarpons batter Anthony Hall hit a ground ball to Tortugas second baseman Johnny Ascanio, who threw to shortstop Victor Acosta to force out baserunner R1 Brenny Escanio at second, whose throw to pitcher Zach Maxwell covering first base arrived just as batter-runner Hall's foot came down at first base. Thus, the two elements of this play are the timing of safe/out, and also the potential pulled foot by the pitcher covering first base. In a crew of two, although the first base umpire often can take a pulled foot on their own, the home plate umpire just so happens to be in an ideal position to provide information about a potential pulled foot by the fielder on a close play at first base. This is because the plate umpire is generally on the foul line with a perfect view of the side of the base, due to the plate umpire's positioning for officiating a potential runner's lane interference infraction on the batter-runner's part. Here, 1B Umpire Robb initially calls the Tarpons batter-runner out at first base. Upon request from at-bat manager Balkovec, she confers with her partner at home plate, and the crew sticks with the out call after the help. Balkovec dissents and is ultimately ejected for arguing the crew's post-consultation ruling that the runner was out at first base.

The strike three call, specifically, ran into graphics problems due to significant digits and rounding. 23:: Catcher Gary Sanchez LEGALLY Blocked Elly De La Cruz From Scoring on Confirmed Out Call...Rule Recap

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 01.07.2023 · 01:56:22 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Padres catcher Gary Sanchez blocked Reds baserunner R3 Elly De La Cruz's pathway to home plate before possessing the ball, so why did replay confirm HP Umpire Jeff Nelson's out call instead of awarding a Reds run due to a violation of the home plate collision rule? Article: https://www.closecallsports.com/2023/06/yes-catcher-can-block-plate-with-drawn.html Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CloseCallSports Twitter: https://twitter.com/CloseCallSports Discord: https://discord.gg/eFXWr7yHWM It turns out Official Baseball Rule 6.01(i)(2), also known as the home plate collision rule, has a very specific exception to the standard plate blocking safe call that one might ordinarily expect in such a situation: "...It shall not be considered a violation of this Rule 6.01(i)(2) if the catcher blocks the pathway of the runner in a legitimate attempt to field the throw (e.g., in reaction to the direction, trajectory or the hop of the incoming throw, or in reaction to a throw that originates from a pitcher or drawn-in infielder)." Accordingly, Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts was indeed a drawn-in infielder when he fielded Reds batter Nick Senzel's infield ground ball and, thus, catcher Sanchez was legally allowed to block De La Cruz from scoring, even though he didn't yet have the baseball in his mitt.

24:: Called for Balk in Game 1 of Doubleheader, Pitcher Ejected Arguing Opponent's Balk No Call in Game 2

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 30.06.2023 · 22:55:45 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· A balk against Buffalo pitcher Casey Lawrence in Game 1 of a Triple-A doubleheader prompted an ejection in Game 2 as Lawrence shouted from the dugout when HP Umpire Chris Marco did NOT call a balk on Worcester. Let's review the no-step balk rule and try and figure this out. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2023/06/milb-ejection-chris-marco-runs-casey.html Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CloseCallSports Twitter: https://twitter.com/CloseCallSports Discord: https://discord.gg/eFXWr7yHWM Due to the quirks of minor league scheduling, 1B Umpire Marco, who called the balk on Lawrence in Game 1, was working behind home plate in Game 2 when Lawrence continued his balk complaint from earlier in the day, unhappy that the umpires did not call a balk on Worcester Red Sox pitcher Chase Shugart for a similar move and pickoff attempt at first base. What's your call?

··· ··· ··· ··· 1B Umpire Ben May ejected Tigers DH Miguel Cabrera for arguing a check swing strike three call. Unaware he had been tossed, Miggy sat in the dugout until Detroit manager AJ Hinch came over and told him. Miggy's reaction after that? Better than the ejection itself. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2023/06/mlb-ejection-122-chad-fairchild-1-bob.html According to both San Diego & Pittsburgh, Nick Martinez and Steven Wilson were also later ejected arguing this call after the inning, by Nic Lentz, though neither was memorialized on film. 29:: E121 - Dave Martinez Ejected After Out of the Base Path Call by Derek Thomas on Keibert Ruiz's Run

30:: E120 - Scherzer Rule Call Prompts Jim Hickey's Ejection Arguing Baseball's New Pitch Clock Rules

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 28.06.2023 · 20:08:01 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· HP Umpire Brennan Miller ejected Nationals pitching coach Jim Hickey for arguing a Scherzer Rule violation call on Nats pitcher Jordan Weems, resulting in an automatic ball four to Julio Rodriguez. Miller warned Weems earlier in the at-bat for violating the same rule. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2023/06/mlb-ejection-120-brennan-miller-1-jim.html Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CloseCallSports Twitter: https://twitter.com/CloseCallSports Discord: https://discord.gg/eFXWr7yHWM In the 10th inning against Seattle, Washington intentionally walked JP Crawford to get to Rodriguez. After ball one, Miller warned pitcher Weems for coming set prior to Rodriguez being in the box and alert to the pitcher (looking up at the pitcher). This is the Scherzer Rule and the penalty for the first infraction is to warn the offender. On the 3-0 pitch, Weems again came set before Rodriguez was alert, resulting in a second violation during the same at-bat for an automatic ball, the fourth of the at-bat. Was Rodriguez's gamesmanship in delaying his look up at the pitcher legal? Or will it soon be outlawed a la the Contreras Rule about having one foot in and one foot out of the box in an attempt to cause the pitcher to violate the Scherzer Rule?
