Official Baseball Rule 5.09(b)(11) makes no mention of which way to turn, but instead states, "Any runner is out when they fail to return at once to first base after overrunning or oversliding that base. If they attempt to run to second they are out when tagged..."
The phrase "if they attempt to run to second" is interpreted as a physical indication from the batter-runner that they are attempting to advance beyond first base. For most plays of this nature—and true for the Scott play here as well—this manifests by a sudden shuffle of the feet as the player turns his body and moves toward the next base.
Simply turning into fair territory or to the left as opposed to turning rightward toward foul territory is not on its own ample evidence with which to call a runner out (when tagged) after losing overrun protection at first base./media:description>

Although Official Baseball Rule 5.10(j) pertains to substitutions and states a substitute pitcher is not considered into the game until said pitcher takes their place on the pitcher's plate (rubber), it's the pitch clock rules that really riled up Schumaker and his ball club.
According to the timer rules for pitching changes and inning breaks, the clock starts when the umpire signals to the bullpen that there is a pitching change...but then resets back to two minutes (if it's under two minutes) when the substitute pitcher steps onto the warning track.
In this case, due to the confusion, the correct Giants pitcher Doval didn't step onto the warning track for quite some time after the initial call to the bullpen, so the clock operator in Miami simply held the timer at two minutes, knowing it would be reset to 2:00 as soon as Doval stepped on the track.
Schumaker wanted a pitch clock violation and automatic ball called against San Francisco for this delay, but the rules do not allow for a violation in this situation, provided that Doval is ready to play according to the prescribed time limits...that start not when the umpire signals the bullpen that a new pitcher is on the way, but upon said new pitcher stepping onto the warning track—all that "wasted" time was simply reset to 2:00 pursuant to the warning track reset rule./media:description>

Official Baseball Rule 5.09(b)(11) makes no mention of which way to turn, but instead states, "Any runner is out when they fail to return at once to first base after overrunning or oversliding that base. If they attempt to run to second they are out when tagged..."
The phrase "if they attempt to run to second" is interpreted as a physical indication from the batter-runner that they are attempting to advance beyond first base. For most plays of this nature—and true for the Scott play here as well—this manifests by a sudden shuffle of the feet as the player turns his body and moves toward the next base.
Simply turning into fair territory or to the left as opposed to turning rightward toward foul territory is not on its own ample evidence with which to call a runner out (when tagged) after losing overrun protection at first base.

Wendelstedt School's interpretation of the runner's lane interference rule (OBR 5.09(a)(11) is that "The determination is not whether the throw is true, but whether it could still reasonably retire the runner" so that even though Brewers batter-runner William Contreras failed to run within the runner's lane on a ground ball to Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya, Amaya's throw was ruled to not have been reasonable.
RULES DIFFERENCE! In college and high school, the NCAA/NFHS rulesets would have put batter-runner Contreras OUT for runner's lane interference because at those levels, altering the fielder's throw IS grounds for an RLI call. At the pro level though, it is NOT and requires the catcher's throw have a reasonable chance to retire the runner. Close call!
The ejection for strike two to Cubs batter Dansby Swanson in the 11th featured both a strike three mechanic given on strike two (oops!) plus a low-zone pitch that was dropped by the catcher and looked worse than it was (the computer had it as a strike as well).

With a runner on first, Tarpons batter Anthony Hall hit a ground ball to Tortugas second baseman Johnny Ascanio, who threw to shortstop Victor Acosta to force out baserunner R1 Brenny Escanio at second, whose throw to pitcher Zach Maxwell covering first base arrived just as batter-runner Hall's foot came down at first base. Thus, the two elements of this play are the timing of safe/out, and also the potential pulled foot by the pitcher covering first base.
In a crew of two, although the first base umpire often can take a pulled foot on their own, the home plate umpire just so happens to be in an ideal position to provide information about a potential pulled foot by the fielder on a close play at first base. This is because the plate umpire is generally on the foul line with a perfect view of the side of the base, due to the plate umpire's positioning for officiating a potential runner's lane interference infraction on the batter-runner's part.
Here, 1B Umpire Robb initially calls the Tarpons batter-runner out at first base. Upon request from at-bat manager Balkovec, she confers with her partner at home plate, and the crew sticks with the out call after the help. Balkovec dissents and is ultimately ejected for arguing the crew's post-consultation ruling that the runner was out at first base.

It turns out Official Baseball Rule 6.01(i)(2), also known as the home plate collision rule, has a very specific exception to the standard plate blocking safe call that one might ordinarily expect in such a situation: "...It shall not be considered a violation of this Rule 6.01(i)(2) if the catcher blocks the pathway of the runner in a legitimate attempt to field the throw (e.g., in reaction to the direction, trajectory or the hop of the incoming throw, or in reaction to a throw that originates from a pitcher or drawn-in infielder)."
Accordingly, Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts was indeed a drawn-in infielder when he fielded Reds batter Nick Senzel's infield ground ball and, thus, catcher Sanchez was legally allowed to block De La Cruz from scoring, even though he didn't yet have the baseball in his mitt.

In the 10th inning against Seattle, Washington intentionally walked JP Crawford to get to Rodriguez. After ball one, Miller warned pitcher Weems for coming set prior to Rodriguez being in the box and alert to the pitcher (looking up at the pitcher). This is the Scherzer Rule and the penalty for the first infraction is to warn the offender. On the 3-0 pitch, Weems again came set before Rodriguez was alert, resulting in a second violation during the same at-bat for an automatic ball, the fourth of the at-bat.
Was Rodriguez's gamesmanship in delaying his look up at the pitcher legal? Or will it soon be outlawed a la the Contreras Rule about having one foot in and one foot out of the box in an attempt to cause the pitcher to violate the Scherzer Rule?
