Most of this potential, namely 61 percent, lies in areas with existing forests, where consistent protection could enable recovery and thus improved COâ‚‚ sequestration. You could also put it this way: finally leave the forests alone (to grow old)! Forests are powerful allies in the fight against the climate crisis. And that is precisely why Plant-for-the-Planet is also involved in forest protection: in close cooperation with the local Mexican authorities, for example, we are funding a small team of rangers to protect the Balam-kin and Balam-kÃº biosphere reserves on the YucatÃ¡n Peninsula in Mexico. Balam-kÃº is a biosphere reserve and means "jaguar temple" in the Mayan language. The Plant-for-the-Planet rangers protect these reserves to counteract the climate and biodiversity crisis. ··· ··· ··· ··· In November 2023, a new scientific study by ETH Zurich gets to the heart of the matter: Through renaturation and improved forest protection, global forest ecosystems can store up to 829 billion additional tons of CO₂. Most of this potential, namely 61 percent, lies in areas with existing forests, where consistent protection could enable recovery and thus improved CO₂ sequestration. You could also put it this way: finally leave the forests alone (to grow old)! Forests are powerful allies in the fight against the climate crisis. And that is precisely why Plant-for-the-Planet is also involved in forest protection: in close cooperation with the local Mexican authorities, for example, we are funding a small team of rangers to protect the Balam-kin and Balam-kú biosphere reserves on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Balam-kú is a biosphere reserve and means "jaguar temple" in the Mayan language. The Plant-for-the-Planet rangers protect these reserves to counteract the climate and biodiversity crisis. In cooperation with the Plant-for-the-Planet Foundation, he observes and analyses the growth of different tree species under different conditions in a study lasting several years. 16,000 trees were planted for this purpose in January 2020.
