12.19.23 Sixth track, opener to the B-side and lead single, October 24, 1972 from his 15th album Talking Book, October 24, 1972. Jeff Beck collaborated on the album in return for Wonder writing him a song. Between the album sessions, Jeff came up with the opening drum beat. Wonder told him to keep playing while he improvised over the top of it. He improvised most of the song, including the riff on the spot. They created a rough demo for the song that day. After finishing the song Stevie decided that he would let Jeff record the song as part of their agreement. Originally the plan was for Beck to released his version of the song first, with his newly formed power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice. However, due to a combination of the trio's debut album getting delayed and motown CEO Barry Gordie predicting that the tune would be a big hit and boost album sales releasing Stevie's version months ahead of the super group single In March of '73.
