Jeff Beck collaborated on the album in return for Wonder writing him a song. Between the album sessions, Jeff came up with the opening drum beat. Wonder told him to keep playing while he improvised over the top of it. He improvised most of the song, including the riff on the spot. They created a rough demo for the song that day. After finishing the song Stevie decided that he would let Jeff record the song as part of their agreement. Originally the plan was for Beck to released his version of the song first, with his newly formed power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice. However, due to a combination of the trio's debut album getting delayed and motown CEO Barry Gordie predicting that the tune would be a big hit and boost album sales releasing Stevie's version months ahead of the super group single In March of '73.

The music originated from Jones' piano on a crisp −20° winter evening in New York. After being developed with the singer the group headed into the studio to find when they re-emerged a blizzard had befallen the city and was reported to be the coldest night in the city's history.

In 2016 an instrumental version was featured in the Marvel studios film Thor: Ragnarok. Pentatonix sang the song as a mashup with Christmas Time Is Here for their 2023 compilation album The Greatest Christmas Hits.

Originally intended and written to be a country song and collaboration with Stevie Nicks. She became overwhelmed with the task of writing lyrics for the 10 minute instrumental demo she received and called back to politely decline. He worked out the writing and arranging with his band in a 6 hour straight jam session. His explanation of the meaning is as follows, ' When there is blood in the sky… red and blue = purple. Pertaining to the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting faith guide you through the purple rain. The title track to his proceeding album, 1999 also included similar references to a doomed ending under a purple sky. The name of the song originates from the 1972 song Ventura Highway by the band America.

The music from bits of ideas Page had collected from recordings. The first attempt at lyrics were improvised fireside in the cottage they were working in with Jimmy strumming the chords on guitar and Robert with pencil and paper in hand. The guitarist claims "a huge percentage of the lyrics were written there and then". He also recalls, "I knew it was good, but I didn't know it was going to be almost like an anthem… but I knew it was the gem of the album, sure". Never released on its own as a single it took until 1973 to reach anthemic status. Plant once gave $10,000 to listener supported radio station KBOO in Portland, Oregon during a pledge drive after the DJ solicited donations by promising the station would never play the song. He was channel surfing in a rental car he was driving to the Oregon Coast after a solo performance in Portland and was impressed with the non-mainstream music the station presented. When asked later for a reason why, he replied, "that it wasn't that he (the disc jockey) didn't like the song but he'd heard it before"
