PertSnergleman's Review:
-------------------------------------------

Connors earned $90,000 for the 3-hour-9-minute triumph and became the first male tennis professional to earn more than $4 million in his career. But equally important to Connors, his major titles at Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows, Queens, assure the 30-year-old left-hander of a No.1 ranking for the year, an honour Connors had lost to John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg in recent seasons.

At a time when oversized racquets, overpowering serves and serveand-volley clones are flaunting their presence on the men's tour, Connors remains in a class by himself. He still uses the same Wilson T2000 stainless steel racquet that is almost archaic alongside the new, expensive graphite and composition models. His relentlessly aggressive, uninhibited, all-court style is more than a trademark.

The victory continued the reign of American champions who have dominated this event since the Open was moved from Forest Hills, Queens, to Flushing Meadows in 1978. Connors also became the ninth consecutive left-hander to win in men's singles.

That Connors will solidify his claim to the year's top spot, with Borg's self-imposed absence, is only one of the elements to the championships. A second was Connors's improved serve, which allowed him to return to the attacking style that characterised his earlier years on the circuit.

A capacity crowd of 20,532 swelled attendance for the $1.5 million championships past the 400,000 mark (407,450) for the first time. Yesterday's turnout was treated to the same daylong excitement that made this tournament the most interesting and invigorating since the open era began in 1968...

...But it was Connors who put a pulsating finish to the championships. And just as he had electrified Wimbledon with an emotionally charged five-set triumph over McEnroe earlier in the summer, Connors stoked the emotional pump one more time yesterday, as he had said he might.

Power may be the new force for men's tennis in 1982, but consistency and courage carried Jimmy Connors to a fourth United States Open men's singles title on this glorious occasion.

Enjoy my friends! :)
