In the last US Open played on its original surface at the Forest Hills, Jimmy took down the great Aussie Ken "Muscles" Rosewall 6-1 6-0 6-1 on September 9, in what has been the most one-sided Grand Slam final ever! This was the first out of five US Open crowns for the crowd favourite Connors and he would become the only player in history who won one Grand Slam on three different surfaces. Despite his age, "Muscles" was still among the best players in the world and he was seeded 5th at the Forest Hills, beating John Newcombe in the semis to set Connors clash. Another interesting fact proves how consistent "Muscles" was, as he played in the US Open quarter-final on the day when Jimmy was born 22 years earlier, also winning the title here in 1956 when his rival was just four years old! It was all about Connors during the entire match, losing just 42 points overall and facing three break points, saving them all to keep his serve intact. On the other hand, "Muscles" never found his rhythm, getting broken eight times from 12 break points Jimmy created and dropping 35 out of 54 points behind his serve, hitting only five service winners in the entire match. Also, the veteran had only eight winners from the field, compared to 20 service winners from Connors and an additional 33 from the field, which was just too much for the Aussie to handle. It just goes to show... muscles ain't everything. Enjoy! :)

The more tired I felt, the better I thought I hit the ball. It was a mental thing – push, push – and I didn’t get angry at anything because I needed every ounce of energy I had…I learned certain things about wasting energy.” McEnroe, whose victory earns him a 66-2 record for the year, says he learned from his five-set loss to Lendl in the French Open final earlier in the year of the importance of conserving energy and that his famed temper tantrums are only physically counterproductive. It was McEnroe’s fourth U.S. Open singles title and his seventh – and final – major singles title. Back in the day, when the two best-of-five set men’s semifinals were played on consecutive days, conservation of energy was a major part of pre-event preparation and match strategy and McEnroe better channeled his energy than he did before. Enjoy it everyone! :)

But equally important to Connors, his major titles at Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows, Queens, assure the 30-year-old left-hander of a No.1 ranking for the year, an honour Connors had lost to John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg in recent seasons. At a time when oversized racquets, overpowering serves and serveand-volley clones are flaunting their presence on the men's tour, Connors remains in a class by himself. He still uses the same Wilson T2000 stainless steel racquet that is almost archaic alongside the new, expensive graphite and composition models. His relentlessly aggressive, uninhibited, all-court style is more than a trademark. The victory continued the reign of American champions who have dominated this event since the Open was moved from Forest Hills, Queens, to Flushing Meadows in 1978. Connors also became the ninth consecutive left-hander to win in men's singles. That Connors will solidify his claim to the year's top spot, with Borg's self-imposed absence, is only one of the elements to the championships. A second was Connors's improved serve, which allowed him to return to the attacking style that characterised his earlier years on the circuit. A capacity crowd of 20,532 swelled attendance for the $1.5 million championships past the 400,000 mark (407,450) for the first time. Yesterday's turnout was treated to the same daylong excitement that made this tournament the most interesting and invigorating since the open era began in 1968... ...But it was Connors who put a pulsating finish to the championships. And just as he had electrified Wimbledon with an emotionally charged five-set triumph over McEnroe earlier in the summer, Connors stoked the emotional pump one more time yesterday, as he had said he might. Power may be the new force for men's tennis in 1982, but consistency and courage carried Jimmy Connors to a fourth United States Open men's singles title on this glorious occasion. Enjoy my friends! :)

Support us through Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/PertSnergleman ------------------------------------------- PertSnergleman's Review: ------------------------------------------- Despite a tender toe and spurts of diarrhoea forcing him to leave the court for six minutes during the second set, Connors rewarded his faithful who view the left-handed double-grunter as an adopted New Yorker. At 31 years old, Connors found himself surrounded by younger pros in the top 10. But as this $2 million tournament demonstrated, Connors remained an individualist whose combative spirit and unrelenting style has become as much a legacy to the sport as his tournament titles and his status, with this victory, as the first man to win more than $5 million playing tennis. Any hopes Lendl had of becoming the first male player in 23 years to win the championship without losing a set were quickly dispelled by Connors, who now has beaten Lendl in 11 of their 14 meetings and extended the string that male left-handers have enjoyed as Open champions since 1973. Neither player performed at the emotional and physical peaks they are known for with Lendl serving two double faults in dropping serve in the second game, and Connors lost his serve from 40-0 in the following game with a game-ending double fault. Asked to compare this 1983 victory with his 1982 triumph, Connors said, ''It's not sweeter, but it's the first time I've won two in a row. I had chances to win two in a row and have let them pass by. I just wanted to do it one more time.'' At a time when Lendl needed his big serve the most, with a set-point at 5-4 in the third set, the lanky Czechoslovak double-faulted into the net, bothered by gusty winds and perhaps his own nerves. Revived by the roars of the crowd and Lendl's unexpected gift, the third-seeded Connors then broke serve with two winning volleys and swept the remaining games en route to the $120,000 first prize and his 100th career singles title, easily tops on the career list. Another capacity crowd of 20,575 (18,430 paying) swelled the total attendance for the championships to a record 427,313 (376,676 paying). Enjoy my friends!

Sanchez-Vicario, 17 years and five months old, defeated Graf 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 7-5 to end the West German’s Grand Slam run and hand her only her second loss in the year. “I went out on court at mentally 100 percent, thinking I could win,” said Sanchez, who had lost to Gral in straight sets in their three previous meetings. Sanchez displayed remarkable poise for someone so young. Trailing 5-3 in the third set and with Graf serving for the match, Sanchez kept the ball in play until the defending champion made some crucial mistakes. Graf said she had some physical discomfort in the late stages of the match - she had to leave the court briefly between games - but she gave full credit to her young opponent. “She was Just plaving a great match," said Graf. "She was really playing some unbelievable shots, close to the lines, sometimes hitting the lines." Graf was disappointed, however, with her own performance. “First of all, I shouldn't have lost the first set," she said. “I had my chances and I didn't use them at all today. I Just made too many mistakes. Just at the end I was weak." "(I thought) It’s not me who is playing on the court at the moment, not putting pressure on. That’s not me.” Sanchez, who reached the quarterfinals of the French Open in 1987 and 1988, attacked Grafs backhand from the beginning and ran for every powerful forehand that the West German could fire at her. “I'm very happy, it's a wonderful day for me." Sanchez said, on the verge of tears and covered in red clay from her victory leap. "I beat the No. 1 in the world, and I'm going to celebrate with my family.” Gabriella Sabatini of Argentina is the only other player to defeat Graf this year. Prior to this match, Graf had lost only four sets all year.

Enjoy! ------------------------------------------- PertSnergleman's Review: ------------------------------------------- Seles, a sweet but a merciless 16 year old, paralyzed Graf with a barrage of winners launched from both sides. Her uncanny ability to take the ball on the rise and her utter fearlessness about connecting with the sidelines allowed Seles to undermine Graf's superior serve and snub her renowned forehand bullets. Most important, Seles's remarkable refusal to become dismayed when Graf fought her way back from a 3-0 first set deficit to hold 4 set points at 6 points to 2 in the tie breaker proved that the teen-ager had the mettle to match her appetite for this clay-court title. ''It's incredible because this is where it all started for me last year, getting into the semis,'' said Seles, who was beaten then by Graf in three sets. ''But at the age of 15, I couldn't beat her mentally, and physically I wasn't as strong. But today in the final, my strategy was to just play as well as I could, no tactics; just think about it like I was in a match on my home court, and not be afraid of her.'' It was the 32d consecutive singles-match victory for Seles, who last month in Berlin ended a Graf winning streak at 66 matches. ''So far I've only lost two matches against her, so she's not a nightmare yet, and I hope she doesn't become one,'' said Graf, who accepted her defeat with a passivity that verged on resignation. This was the first time in four years that Graf had lost two tournaments in a row, an unsettling trend for a champion accustomed to collecting trophies. Graf accepted her runner-up platter, wiped away a tear and stepped forward to make her concession speech, just as it began to rain. Graf said the reasons for her confidence problem were multiple. ''It's everything together,'' she said. ''Today when I was close, I didn't play the right shots, and that's usually something that's very strong about me,'' said Graf, who squandered her fourth and final set point of the first-set tie breaker by double-faulting to 6-6, her only double-fault of the match. ''I just don't feel 100 percent sure of my shots,'' said Graf, for whom conviction in playmaking has always been a trademark. ''If I would have won the first set, I would have won the match, but I didn't,'' said Graf, who squandered two break points with Seles serving at 4-all in the second set. ''She took the risks, had the freshness, and she played with aggressiveness.'' In the end, the match without a doubt belonged to the Yugoslav teen-ager, who broke away from the Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida this winter and is now trained solely by her father, Karolj, a former cartoonist, who applied sports science and physics principles to his daughter's training techniques. Seles had no such difficulties: she knew she simply wanted to hit each ball like an inside-the-park home run. Although this was her first Grand Slam final, Seles played with a balance of poise and aggression that was markedly absent from her opponent's game. The ever-effusive Seles said she planned to take advantage of today's accomplishment to talk her parents into letting her apply her $293,000 winner's check toward the car of her dreams, a Lamborghini. What a way to open your Grand Slam account... Enjoy!

Support us through Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/PertSnergleman ------------------------------------------- PertSnergleman's Review: ------------------------------------------- Although Seles lost, the point was made: Graf could be had. Seles, who's from Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, debuted on Court Central in the third round by waving to the crowd as she entered the stadium and throwing flowers into the stands. When Seles attempted to present a bouquet to her opponent, fourth-seeded Zina Garrison, and Garrison refused it, the spectators booed Garrison. "It's a bunch of hype," said Garrison after being blown away 6-3, 6-2. "She's just another baseliner." And Madonna is just another Pepsi-Cola ad. Seles, ranked No. 22 worldwide, originally said she didn't think she gave Graf a scare. But she changed her answer moments later saying, 'Well, maybe a little.' At 5-feet-8 and 108 pounds, Seles has the shots of a double-barreled shotgun. She was the the first player during the two-week event to extend Graf to three sets on the red clay of Roland Garros. She already knows the parts of her game that need to be worked on for another possible encounter with Graf. 'It doesn't matter that I lost.' said the blonde-haired Seles, who was facing Graf for the first time ever while also playing her maiden Grand Slam event. 'I would have been happy to win the match,' said the spirited Yugoslavian phenom, who has been working out in Florida as one of Nick Bollettieri's prized pupils. 'But I'm happy with my play.' Of course, that was before Seles's physical resiliency, hitting power, competitive zest and tactical precocity took Graf to the brink in their semifinal, a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory for Graf... and at once it was clear that if a player is sufficiently quick and irrepressible enough to keep hanging in and slugging it out with Graf, the champ gets anxious and irritable. Enjoy this one friends...

Seles and Navratilova, who met in the U.S. Open final last month, played with intensity normally reserved for a Grand Slam event. Support us through Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/PertSnergleman -------------------------------------------- PertSnergleman's Review: -------------------------------------------- Steffi Graf nearly saw the defense of her third title crumble as suddenly as men's #1 Jim Courier's pursuit of his first. Playing the last match on Centre Court, Graf dropped her first set to Mariaan de Swardt of South Africa, won the second set decisively and then needed to hang on for a 5-7, 6-0, 7-5 victory. De Swardt put on a fierce display of serving that kept Graf on the defensive and almost resulted in the second biggest upset of the day. Though many expected de Swardt to fold, she hung on to provide Graf with some nervous moments. De Swardt fought off a break point in the eighth game to even the set, then won the first point on Graf's serve. But in the end, Graf was too strong for her 21-year-old opponent, ranked 76th in the world. She won eight of the last 10 points and the match. "It was a very difficult match," the 23-year-old German said of de Swardt, who is playing doubles here with Elise Burgin of Baltimore. "She really just played well. She served very well. Except for that one game in the first set, I don't feel bad at all for some reason." Graf said, "Maybe my return wasn't as sharp as I wanted it to be, but I only struggled on one service game. It's just the way she played." While the second-seeded Graf advanced to the fourth round, three lesser seeds fell: -- No. 9 Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere was beaten 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) by Kristen Godridge, 19, of Australia, ranked No. 141. -- No. 11 Jana Novotna was ousted 6-3, 6-3 by American Patty Fendick, ranked No. 68. -- No. 16 Judith Wiesner was upset 6-1, 7-5 by Naoko Sawamatsu, who became the first Japanese woman to get this far.

Support us through Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/PertSnergleman -------------------------------------------- PertSnergleman's Review: -------------------------------------------- A disappointed Kim Clijsters said she was not prepared to blame a controversial line call late in the third set for her loss to Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final of the 2004 Australian Open. Clijsters was clearly upset with the call, which gave Henin-Hardenne the decisive break in the final set and allowed the top seed to serve for the title. At the time, the No.2 seed questioned the overruling by chair umpire Sandra De Jenken and later said the call had helped turn the tide of the final. It was the third time in less than 12 months the 20-year-old has lost a grand slam final to her compatriot. Afterwards Clijsters did not want the overruling to be seen as her excuse for losing the match. "I'm not the type of player that's gonna start complaining after matches," she said. "That's something at the moment [that is] very disappointing, I think. "A few people have told me that it was in. So that's even more disappointing then. But I'm not going to blame the umpire or anything because everyone makes mistakes. But of course it's disappointing." Asked whether she was annoyed that Henin- Hardenne had become involved in the line call, Clijsters said she did not want to enter into such a debate. "I'm not going to get into things like that. I don't want to start any trouble or anything," she said. "You know, things happen . . . so I don't really want to get into too much." What Clijsters would say is that she believed the shot was a winner. "You feel things when they come off the racquet," she said. "I've been playing for 12 years. Now, as soon as I hit the ball, I probably know if it's going in or out. "I definitely had the feeling it was good but nothing I can do about it now." Henin-Hardenne said the decision was crucial but was "pretty sure" the umpire got it right. "It was important because it was a break," she said. "And I needed to take one game in this point after losing three games in a row. The umpire took her responsibilities and I think it was a very tough call, but I think it was just long." Clijsters has now lost all four of her grand-slam final appearances (three to Henin). She is often accused in the media of choking in big matches, but could it be that she is simply too nice to win? Questioned about the overrule, Clijsters said: 'I'm not the sort of player who complains after matches. I definitely had the feeling it was in and it was disappointing that she [the umpire] overruled, but everyone makes mistakes.' When pushed to comment further, she said: 'I don't want to start any trouble.' Henin, however, was brooking no argument. 'I needed to take a game,' she said. 'It was a key point and right now I don't care too much about it.' End of discussion. Henin now holds three of the four majors and will go into Wimbledon determined to gain the only title missing. 'That's definitely the goal,' she said. If taking your chances, fairly or unfairly, is the difference between a champion and a runner-up then, on the evidence of this match at least, she may well achieve it.

I n this mind-set, he believed he could do anything at any time. He tried shots that usually qualify as risky, and they worked. Enjoy!

Support us through Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/PertSnergleman ------------------------------------------- PertSnergleman's Review: ------------------------------------------- Saturday 12 September 1992 - 5 hours and 26 minutes... It is the longest match in the history of the US Open and also one of the most entertaining semis ever at this Major, as Edberg & Chang pushed each other to the limits all the time. In what was an extraordinary battle of two different styles and tennis philosophies, Edberg rushed to the net 254 times (won 144 points) while Chang tried to cross the finish line first with his monitored baseline error-free game. At the start, Edberg appeared to be struggling with his serve, which forced him to engage in more baseline rallies than usual. Chang took the first set, 7-6. In the second set, the Swede made a much better impression, and soon, he was up 4-0. Abandoned by his serve again, he saw his opponent coming back, but he eventually managed to seal the second set, 7-5. A similar scenario happened in the third set, with the defending champion leading 5-2, before being pegged back and then winning the set 7-6. If Edberg thought he was going to race through the fourth set, then he was disappointed. Chang kept on fighting for every point, and when the players reached 5-5, it seemed that Edberg was now paying the price for his two previous five-set matches against Krajicek and Lendl. Taking advantage of his opponent’s weariness, the 1989 Roland-Garros champion won five games in a row to lead 3-0 in the decider, and soon, he even obtained two double break points, almost match points. Edberg saved them and clawed his way back in another twist, only to be broken again at 3-2. Chang couldn’t hold on to his serve either, and eventually, the 23rd break of serve, which gave Edberg a 5-4 lead, was the last. Saving a last break point, the Swede propelled himself into the final. With five hours and 26 minutes of play, Edberg and Chang had just played the longest match in US Open history. The Swede had approached the net no fewer than 254 times. “I had chances, he had chances — it was just incredible — but now there’s only one match to go,” said Edberg. It was sort of a tough match again, mentally. He had me down 3-0, 15-40, and then the momentum changed.” The following day, Edberg would defeat Pete Sampras in the final, claiming a second consecutive US Open crown, his last major title. This success would make him world No 1 again, although only for three weeks. In total, the Swede would spend 72 weeks on top of the ATP ranking. In 1993, he would reach a last Grand Slam final in Australia, then he would slowly decline until his retirement at the end of 1996. Enjoy!

I never give up in a match. However down I am, I fight until the last ball. My list of matches shows that I have turned a great many so-called irretrievable defeats into victories." — Bjorn Borg Borg understood the necessity of being in shape, of being as strong at the end of matches as you were at the beginning. This athleticism allowed him to dictate matches and gave him five Wimbledon championships and six French Open titles, often won back-to-back. Borg was the author of the modern game built on talent but bolstered by strength and endurance. His reign on these natural surfaces highlighted his strengths: his speed, his endurance, and his reaction time. His arsenal included a wicked two-handed backhand with heavy topspin that aided his accuracy, as well as an underrated serve. Perhaps his greatest attribute was his coolness under pressure. Because of his unflappable concentration, Borg was nicknamed the “Ice Man,” or “Ice Borg.” He never let anything or anyone take him out of his game. Support us through Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/PertSnergleman -------------------------------------------- PertSnergleman's Review: -------------------------------------------- Martina Navratilova heard the future of women’s tennis in 1989 at the $1-million Virginia Slims Championships, and the sound was memorable. The Navratilova-Seles match began as a seemingly mild battle of wills between an upwardly mobile 15-year-old rookie from Yugoslavia and a 33-year-old veteran intent on proving she need not look backward to gaze on her better days. Monica Seles’ constant barrage of shots were not a surprise to the 33-year-old Navratilova. The two met in the final of the Virginia Slims of Dallas in September 1989, and Seles held two set points in the first set before losing, 7-6, 6-3. “I was expecting her power because of Dallas,” said a relieved Navratilova, ''Survival of the fittest,'' Navratilova added, not quite in jest, after advancing to the semifinals of the Virginia Slims Championships for the first time since 1986. “But she hit one ball tonight that was harder than any ball that’s ever been hit against me. Thank God, the linesman realized it was out, because I could barely even see it. That thing is like a bazooka. I don’t know what’s in her racket. It must be corked.” “I certainly played well, I can’t deny that,” said Seles, who had leg cramps for the first time in her career. “I just couldn’t win my service games. That’s never happened before.” For all of Seles’ power, she also has the youthful tendency to hit the ball with only one pace. When that fails, the ball goes out. Only on rare occasions did she alter her stroke for the sake of accuracy. “I certainly played well, I can’t deny that,” said Seles, who had leg cramps for the first time in her career. “I just couldn’t win my service games. That’s never happened before.” Enjoy!
