After Abram won a convincing victory over the coalition forces that took his nephew Lot, and plenty of others, captive (see Genesis 14), Abram could have been riding high, but there were still plenty of things to cause uncertainty, doubt or fear. Despite God’s promise of many descendants, he and his wife were still waiting for child number one. God had also promised them the land, but it hardly belonged to them since plenty of other people also lived there. Nothing was happening quickly.
In the midst of the delayed answers to God’s promises, the Lord once again graciously spoke to Abram in Genesis 15. It’s a fascinating dialogue with unexpected twists and turns. It is that text to which we turn our attention this Sunday. We will explore the specific circumstances with regard to Abram, but also the broader implications for us. We’ll also partake in the Lord’s Supper.
