For the past 50+ years Kansas City Young Audiences has partnered with area schools as well as arts and community organizations to provide superior arts education and integration. With the help of workshops, residencies, and the Community School of the Arts, KCYA has served more than 5 million students across the KC metro. Since 2007 Kim Shope has served as the head of the dance department at KCYA’s Community School of the Arts. Her experiences studying and teaching at the Kansas City Ballet School have made her an invaluable asset to the teaching artists and students at KCYA. In addition to teaching, Kim danced professionally for the Kansas City Ballet from 1984 to 1998. Kim also teaches a "Move It- Get Healthy" workshop in several elementary schools each year. These days you can find her in the studio choreographing and preparing her fabulous students for their Spring Dance Performance “Back to the 80s.”
Whether it’s classical ballet or contemporary hip hop, the Community School of the Arts at Kansas City Young Audiences has the dance to suit your child. Offering classes 6 days a week in the Spring, Summer, and Fall we also have the classes to fit your schedule. Starting at 2-years old, students are welcome to join KCYA for a Parent & Me: Pre-Ballet Class to introduce them to dance and movement. From there students can progress through our Pre-Ballet program and continue on all the way to Ballet VI. If ballet isn’t your bag, we offer Hip Hop or Hip Hop/Jazz Combo classes for students as young as 5-years old. Add to that a Musical Theatre class with tap dancing, and there is truly a style for every dancer.
