How do I open a PDF with Adobe Reader on a Mac? The default PDF application on a Mac is called Preview. This program is not compatible with newer PDF files. So Adobe Reader works better. Here's the trick: Don't try to open the PDF file by clicking on it. Instead, launch Adobe Reader. Then go to the File menu, select Open, and choose the PDF you want. You may be prompted to make Adobe the default program when opening PDFs. If you agree to this option, then in the future you should be able to open PDFs by clicking on them. ··· ··· ··· ··· Kansas City Young Audiences Community School of the Arts Beginner Ballet Class taught by Miss Kim Shope (Excerpts) Kansas City Young Audiences Community School of the Arts Ballet Students are ages 6-9 years old. The youngest student is 6 years old and was just moved up to this class. I invited 5 of her classmates to also move up but they will not be able to re-join the class until Fall Session 2015. Kansas City Young Audiences’ Community School of the Arts is a not for profit organization that teaches dance, music and theater classes and camps to a diverse student population. More than 20% of our students receive scholarships and many would not have the opportunity to reap the many benefits dance lessons offer without financial assistance. Most of our students attend classes once per week and still participate in our delightful all-inclusive performances. CSA’s more advanced dance students attend classes two to three days per week and we encourage them to explore other activities that will create young adults with many interests and life skills. This is in contrast to many dance studios that require multiple classes per week limiting their time to pursue other dreams and develop other skills. Performances by the delightful and dedicated dance students of Kansas City Young Audiences' Community School of the Arts are danced by more than 80 young students age 3 to 16 years old. Our young students are assisted by the more experienced dancers creating a sweet camaraderie between the different classes, enhancing leadership skills, responsibility and the importance of teamwork. Teenage dancers are often encouraged to choreograph their own solos or small group dances for performances. This opportunity has proved to be a deeper learning experience for our students by giving them chances to grow artistically by enhancing self expression, creativity and self esteem while developing their vital life skills including critical thinking, organization, decision making, responsibility, and communication. “I observe the dancers as they create, reflect, challenge and adapt during their collaborations and know this is learning at its best.” ~ Kim Shope CSA Dance Teaching Artists share their love of dance with all students regardless of experience, ability, size, or economic background. Dance Teaching Artists value the overall well being of each individual child and strive to incorporate important life skills and learning experiences into all dance classes. We encourage their growth by giving them the confidence to set and achieve goals through trial and error to enhance resiliency. Training incorporates “call and response activities” that take advantage of verbal and physical learning modes to absorb more and develop a deeper understanding of dance technique and terminology. We teach Observation and Communication skills during classes. Even the youngest dance students are asked to observe one of their peers demonstrating a step and verbalize what the student did correctly. As students advance they may create a dance step combination for their whole class and explain proper technique before and after the combinations are executed. “I see the pride swell in a child when their peers tell them they pointed their toes, jumped really high or tried their hardest and know this is an added benefit of asking students to share the correct technical aspects of the step.” ~ Kim Shope Kim Shope Head of Dance Department Kansas City Young Audiences Community School of the Arts www.kcya.org 816-531-4022

··· ··· ··· ··· For the past 50+ years Kansas City Young Audiences has partnered with area schools as well as arts and community organizations to provide superior arts education and integration. With the help of workshops, residencies, and the Community School of the Arts, KCYA has served more than 5 million students across the KC metro. Right now the Community School of the Arts is gearing up for another great summer of camps and classes and you’re invited! Visit kcya.org for a full lineup of camps and classes or snag a brochure before you leave tonight. Since 2007 Kim Shope has served as the head of the dance department at KCYA’s Community School of the Arts. Her experiences studying and teaching at the Kansas City Ballet School have made her an invaluable asset to the teaching artists and students at KCYA. In addition to teaching, Kim danced professionally for the Kansas City Ballet from 1984 to 1998. Kim also teaches a "Move It- Get Healthy" workshop in several elementary schools each year. These days you can find her in the studio choreographing and preparing her fabulous students for their Spring Dance Performance “Back to the 80s.” Whether it’s classical ballet or contemporary hip hop, the Community School of the Arts at Kansas City Young Audiences has the dance to suit your child. Offering classes 6 days a week in the Spring, Summer, and Fall we also have the classes to fit your schedule. Starting at 2-years old, students are welcome to join KCYA for a Parent & Me: Pre-Ballet Class to introduce them to dance and movement. From there students can progress through our Pre-Ballet program and continue on all the way to Ballet VI. If ballet isn’t your bag, we offer Hip Hop or Hip Hop/Jazz Combo classes for students as young as 5-years old. Add to that a Musical Theatre class with tap dancing, and there is truly a style for every dancer.
