GBH News Gov. Maura Healey had a busy itinerary for her swing through Dublin this week. Along with commemorating the 30th anniversary of Ireland decriminalizing homosexuality and reflecting on John F. Kennedy’s visit there 60 years ago, Healey was also pitching Massachusetts as a place whose values make it an attractive destination – and keep its economy humming.
It’s an extension of the same case the governor makes domestically, but her first overseas trip as the state’s chief executive thrusts the idea – plus Healey herself – newly onto the world stage.
So, how did her message land across the Atlantic? When will we know if the trip paid off? And what might it say about the first-term governor’s political future? Katie Lannan is joined by GBH News political reporter Adam Reilly, freshly back from Dublin to share his takeaways from covering Healey’s travels.
Then, it’s become a Massachusetts tradition – starting the new fiscal year without a final state budget in place.
Lawmakers are keeping the streak alive for the 13th year in a row, with a roughly $56 billion bill to fund all facets of state government still locked up in closed-door negotiations as fiscal 2024 dawns Saturday.
Aside from the years-long pattern of missed deadlines, a few other factors complicate the process this year. The House and Senate are simultaneously trying to find a path forward on a long-awaited package of tax breaks, and the two branches also have significant differences on policy points like whether to authorize online Lottery sales. Katie Lannan discusses the holdup and its implications with Doug Howgate, president of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, and Lisa Kashinsky, author of Politico’s Massachusetts Playbook.
