Generation Z, or Gen Z are considered the most racially and ethnically diverse of all the groups, with the oldest Gen Z’s born in 1997, and will turn 27 this year. Combined, both generations wield a large and growing voice on issues in society. Both groups are also important voting blocks in the upcoming presidential election. On this week’s episode of Basic Black, Paris Alston, Co-host of GBH’s Morning Edition 89.7 spoke with some young adults to get their thoughts and opinions on a range of issues that impact their lives now and in the future. Guests: -Joel Crawford, a sophomore at Harvard University studying Government and Philosophy. -Adelia Da Silva, the Youth Leadership Committee Co-Chair at BAGLY: The Boston Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth, a youth-led, adult-supported social support organization advocating for programs, policies, and services for the LGBTQ+ youth community. -Eryn Ashlei Bailey, the Affirmative Action Officer of the Boston Ward 10 Democratic Committee. She is also a SPARK Boston council alumnus. Interested in other Basic Black episodes? SoundThinking, the company behind ShotSpotter, has acoustic sensors that are placed around the city — which the company argues help police detect and respond quickly to shootings even if no one makes a 911 call. With Boston's ShotSpotter contract up for renewal in June, a new report from the ACLU of Massachusetts makes the case that it's an unreliable technology and calls for the city to move on. The ACLU's analysis of more than 1,300 Boston police reports found nearly 70% of ShotSpotter alerts yielded no evidence of shots fired. Kade Crockford, director of the Technology for Liberty Project at the ACLU of Massachusetts, and Tom Chittum, SoundThinking's senior vice president of Analytics and Forensic Services, join Katie Lannan to discuss ShotSpotter's role and impacts in Boston. Eng, the former head of the Long Island Rail Road, has been optimistic about the T's future, and advocates and government officials alike have cheered both the progress he's made and the transparency he's brought to the role. To break down what's been different so far under Eng's tenure and what else the T still needs, Katie Lannan is joined on Talking Politics by TransitMatters executive director Jarred Johnson and GBH News transportation reporter Bob Seay, who both recently sat down with Eng for a discussion on rebuilding trust with the T. 3:: Young, Gifted and Black - What’s on the Minds of Millennials and Gen Z's of Color?

01.01.1970 01:00:00 19.04.2024 21:29:30
How do Millennials and Gen Z's of color see their future? #basicblackgbh, #millenials #genz, #blackyouthvote, Millennials are the biggest generation group in the United States, with over 72 million in population surpassing Baby Boomers. 4:: ShotSpotter aims to detect gunshots instantly. The ACLU says it's ineffective.

01.01.1970 01:00:00 19.04.2024 20:27:12
Police in Boston have used ShotSpotter technology since 2007 to notify them when and where gunshots ring out. 5:: Has MBTA GM Phillip Eng gotten the T back on track?

01.01.1970 01:00:00 19.04.2024 20:14:51
MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng stepped onto the job just over a year ago, taking the helm of a transit system that was plagued by widespread slowdowns and under federal scrutiny over a string of safety incidents. 01.01.1970 01:00:00 19.04.2024 10:30:14
Massachusetts has strengthened regulations on permits for power plants and other industrial operations to help combat air pollution in low-income and majority Black and Latino communities. The new rules take into account the cumulative pollution from all sources in an area, instead of on a company by company basis. Ahead of Earth Day, the Commissioner of Massachusetts' Department of Environmental Protection Bonnie Heiple joined Craig LeMoult to talk about the new rule and other climate initiatives. 00:00 :34 What impact will new regulations for permits on industrial operations in Massachusetts have for environmental justice communities? 3:08 Will these new regulations impact existing projects? 4:04 Will these new regulations have an impact on landfills and waste incinerators? 5:15 Thoughts about the Ash Landfill Waste incinerator in Saugus and could it see a closure? 5:55 Can the State do anything to stop frequent sewage overflows? 9:15 Are PFAS regulations sufficient to protect us? 12:07 Are the permits too broad, allowing the release of toxic chemicals? 13:45 How is Massachusetts reducing food waste? 16:08 Will you support the expansion of the bottle bill? 18:21 Is there more that the State can do to encourage electric vehicles? 19:: Talking Politics Full Episode: June 30, 2023

01.01.1970 01:00:00 01.07.2023 11:33:22
Gov. Maura Healey had a busy itinerary for her swing through Dublin this week. Along with commemorating the 30th anniversary of Ireland decriminalizing homosexuality and reflecting on John F. Kennedy’s visit there 60 years ago, Healey was also pitching Massachusetts as a place whose values make it an attractive destination – and keep its economy humming. It’s an extension of the same case the governor makes domestically, but her first overseas trip as the state’s chief executive thrusts the idea – plus Healey herself – newly onto the world stage. So, how did her message land across the Atlantic? When will we know if the trip paid off? And what might it say about the first-term governor’s political future? Katie Lannan is joined by GBH News political reporter Adam Reilly, freshly back from Dublin to share his takeaways from covering Healey’s travels. Then, it’s become a Massachusetts tradition – starting the new fiscal year without a final state budget in place. Lawmakers are keeping the streak alive for the 13th year in a row, with a roughly $56 billion bill to fund all facets of state government still locked up in closed-door negotiations as fiscal 2024 dawns Saturday. Aside from the years-long pattern of missed deadlines, a few other factors complicate the process this year. The House and Senate are simultaneously trying to find a path forward on a long-awaited package of tax breaks, and the two branches also have significant differences on policy points like whether to authorize online Lottery sales. Katie Lannan discusses the holdup and its implications with Doug Howgate, president of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, and Lisa Kashinsky, author of Politico’s Massachusetts Playbook.
