Dominican Friars on the Luna Expedition landed on the beach now known as Santa Rosa in 1559 and offered the first known Catholic (Latin) on the continent. The Spaniards settled in what is now West Pensacola but by 1561 abandoned the colony after a hurricane. They resettled in St. Augustine by about 1565 after destroying the French colony, Fort Caroline. The cross on the dunes was erected on the 400th anniversary of the original landing and Mass. This was done by the Knights of Columbus in 1959. While surrounding dunes have eroded or been completely wiped out, the dune on which the cross was erected remains.
