The fortepiano featured at Winterreise and Schubertiade this year is a new acquisition by the Mead Witter School of Music. Made by Rodney Regier in Freeport, Maine, this instrument is a hybrid version of those by Viennese makers Conrad Graf and Ignaz Bösendorfer from the 1820s. Playing a period instrument allows the musician to be in touch with the sounds composers like Schubert heard.
Delivered last October, this new instrument was funded by the University of Wisconsin–Madison Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education and Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation through a Research Core Revitalization Program grant.
