media:description>School of Music Voice Faculty Sarah Brailey chats with Guggenheim and Rome Prize-winning composer, producer, and vocalist Lisa Bielawa about her opera-in-progress, La Ballonniste.
In collaboration with University Opera at the Mead Witter School of Music, and joined by the opera’s librettist Claire Solomon and dramaturg Cori Ellison, the development period will culminate with a workshop performance of La Ballonniste on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at 7:30 pm in Collins Recital Hall at the Hamel Music Center. The work-in-progress performance is open to the public and free to attend. Lisa Bielawa, Cori Ellison, and Claire Solomon will also host a talk on September 18, 2024 from from 6 pm to 7 pm in the Humanities building, Room 1341. The talk is free and open to the public.
La Ballonniste is a heartfelt comedy centering on 18th century French opera singer Élisabeth Tible: the first woman to fly in a hot air balloon. The opera opens in 1784, Lyon, on the cusp of the French Revolution, as balloon madness sweeps France.
Special thanks to the Mead Witter School of Music for the generous support to make this project possible./media:description>

The Pro Arte Quartet is one of the world’s most distinguished string quartets. Founded by conservatory students in Brussels in 1912, it became one of the most celebrated ensembles in Europe in the first half of the twentieth century and was named Court Quartet to the Queen of Belgium. Its world reputation blossomed in 1919 when the quartet began the first of many tours that enticed notable composers such as Milhaud, Honegger, Martin, and Casella to write new works for the ensemble. In addition, Bartók dedicated his fourth quartet to the PAQ (1927), and in 1936 PAQ premiered Barber’s Op. 11 quartet, with the now-famous “Adagio for Strings” as its slow movement.

media:description>The fortepiano featured at Winterreise and Schubertiade this year is a new acquisition by the Mead Witter School of Music. Made by Rodney Regier in Freeport, Maine, this instrument is a hybrid version of those by Viennese makers Conrad Graf and Ignaz Bösendorfer from the 1820s. Playing a period instrument allows the musician to be in touch with the sounds composers like Schubert heard.
Delivered last October, this new instrument was funded by the University of Wisconsin–Madison Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education and Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation through a Research Core Revitalization Program grant.
Tickets to Winterreise and Schubertiade are available at https://music.wisc.edu/events//media:description>

media:description>We are so excited to introduce Lindsay Flowers as the new Assistant Professor of Oboe this fall. Lindsay is a member of the Wingra Wind Quintet and guides student-generated community engagement projects. She received a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music under the tutelage of Linda Strommen and Roger Roe. Her background in athletics distinguishes her pedagogical approach in her emphasis on performance visualization, disciplined commitment, and supportive teamwork.
