Hike on Spruce Railroad Trail along Lake Crescent

· 03.04.2024 · 23:26:11 ··· ··· Wednesday ·· 3 (3) Randall Wingett
The Spruce Railroad Trailhead is only 9.2 miles by car via Joyce-Piedmont Rd from Salt Creek Campground where we had camped in our Travato van the previous night. Diane and I decided to go for a hike on the trail first thing in the morning when there would be fewer hikers. We have been on this trail a couple of times before with Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound, and every time it is a new experience depending on the seasons and the weather. Fortunately, the sunny, cool late winter day was perfect for a hike along the banks of the majestic Lake Crescent. And after our hike, we decided to go back to Salt Creek Campground for one more night.

Background:
Spring arriving soon, and feeling cabin fever from the dreary winter weather, Diane and I were eager to get out of the house and go camping in our Winnebago Travato 59kl before the throngs of RV campers flocked to the Olympic Peninsula. Although reservations were now open at the Clallam County Salt Creek Campground, the cold and rainy weather was predicted to turn dry and sunny over the next few mid-weekdays, so we decided to take our chance on finding an available RV site with a full hookup. We packed up our Travato with supplies for a two-night outing, loaded up Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound and drove the short 30-mile distance to the beautiful Salt Creek Campground that overlooks the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Upon our arrival, the campground was practically empty. Fantastic!
