Enjoy the quiet sounds of nature and the occasional overhead jet sounds of freedom from the nearby Oak Harbor Naval Air Station as we relish the mirror reflections from the shores of Cranberry Lake, then walk along the storm-damaged Puget Sound beach and through the parking lot closed because of the piles of driftwood. As we walked by the learning center building to inspect the damage, we discovered the trailhead to the Big Tree Loop trail, which led us through a breathtaking environment of the sand dune forest, the wetlands and the 850-year-old Douglas Fir tree. Before returning home to Sequim, we drove north across the Deception Pass bridge then through the Skagit Vally for a short drive-by visit of the brilliantly colored Tulip fields that are in full bloom. Ready for lunch, we drove the short distance to the town of La Conner where we enjoyed some beers and delicious Taco Fajita Salads at the Santo Coyote Mexican Kitchen restaurant at their outdoor patio where Skye could be with us, warmed by a propane fire. What an amazing day it was! Diane and I have driven past Deception Pass State Park many times to visit my dad in Anacortes since we moved to Washington State in 2017. And every time we went over the Deception Pass bridge, we said to each other someday we are going to camp here. And finally, that day has arrived. Sadly, part of the park is closed due to significant storm damage in January 2024. But most of the park including the trails, campsites and beach remain open to the public. One road to a parking lot at the beach remains closed due to the piles of driftwood and washed-out stairways and asphalt. And if peace and quite is the top priority for your camping trip, just know that the silence is often broken during the day by the sounds of Navy aircraft taking off and landing at the nearby Oak Harbo Naval Air Station, and sometimes flying in formation right over your head. Locals call this “the sound of freedom.”/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="2" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="50"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:-EBMjdiu4JA/id> yt:videoId>-EBMjdiu4JA/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UC6GcJhYvIMzu9U1u96KyVOQ/yt:channelId> title>Camping in our Winnebago Travato 59kl at Deception Pass Part 1/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EBMjdiu4JA"/> author> name>Randall Wingett/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6GcJhYvIMzu9U1u96KyVOQ/uri> /author> published>2024-04-17T18:15:12+00:00/published> updated>2024-04-18T06:41:48+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Camping in our Winnebago Travato 59kl at Deception Pass Part 1/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/-EBMjdiu4JA?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i2.ytimg.com/vi/-EBMjdiu4JA/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Diane and I have driven past Deception Pass State Park many times to visit my dad in Anacortes since we moved to Washington State in 2017. Diane and Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound accompanied me on a casual drive around rural Sequim Washington where we are retired and living our dream! Our first and only stop was at Dungeness Landing, a small Clallam County Park with a boat launch on the shores of Dungeness Bay. The tide was low, and the view of Mount Banker and the Dungeness Spit Lighthouse was spectacular! Next, we cruised down Marine Drive that follows along the bluffs overlooking Dungeness Bay, then passes by the steep access road to Cline Spit County Park with a small public beach and boat launch. Often on windy days you will see windsurfers skirting across the choppy but protected waters of Dungeness Bay. Finally, we drove past the Olympic Game Farm to see the animals through the fence, and lines of vehicles occupied by tourists who were feeding the animals special bread purchased at the Game Farm. When we arrived at Marrowstone, two young men directed us to park in a row of other vehicles at the bottom of a sloped section of mowed lawn. As I parked my Travato I could see some muddy tire marks nearby. The spring weather was rather cool with intermittent rain showers making for a rather uncomfortable outdoor experience. We have been on this trail a couple of times before with Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound, and every time it is a new experience depending on the seasons and the weather. Fortunately, the sunny, cool late winter day was perfect for a hike along the banks of the majestic Lake Crescent. 1:: Camping in our Winnebago Travato at Deception Pass Part 2 – Skagit Valley Tulips

01.01.1970 01:00:00 19.04.2024 13:46:30
Join us for a magical morning walk with Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound at Deception Pass State Park. Locals call this “the sound of freedom.”

3:: Sunday Drive in My 1931 Ford Model A Pickup – Sequim Washington

01.01.1970 01:00:00 15.04.2024 14:01:40
A perfect spring day for a drive in my Model A! What a ride it was!

4:: Winnebago Travato Stuck in Muddy Lawn at Marrowstone Vineyards & Pulled Out by a Kubota

01.01.1970 01:00:00 14.04.2024 14:03:27
Diane and I decided to go camping for the weekend at Fort Flagler State Park in our 2022 Winnebago Travato 59kl so that we could attend a wine tasking event at the nearby Marrowstone Vineyards with our best friends. Oh well, let’s enjoy some wine!

5:: Norwegian Elkhounds Stress Reliever – Elwha Beach Part 2

01.01.1970 01:00:00 08.04.2024 20:36:42
Our two-and-a-half-year-old Norwegian Elkhound, Skye, loves going to the beach! Especially Elwha Beach! Here, you have both fresh water and saltwater beaches. Dogs are allowed off leash to run and play on the sandy beach and swim in the Salish Sea, then quench their thirst and rinse off in the Elwha River! This is a perfect location for both humans and canines to beachcomb, swim, wade, dig in the soft sand and explore to the heart’s content! And as you will see in this video, Skye is in heaven here at the Mouth of the Elwha River! Background: Elwha Beach is located at the west side of the mouth of the Elwha River, which empties into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This beach was formed after the dams on the Elwha River were removed in 2011 and 2014, gradually releasing many tons of sandy sediment. There is a parking area at the Elwha Beach trailhead, with a couple of porta potties and a doggie waste station. A short path leads across a levee that contains a freshwater beaver pond and leads to the beach on the west side of the mouth of the Elwha River. When you reach the beach, you can choose to go left for a walk on the mile-long sandy beach along the Strait of Juan de Fuca or turn right for a shorter, more precarious walk along a silty, sandy, rocky, and marshy river delta where beautiful fresh river water flows from the Olympic Mountains.

6:: Dungeness Trails Hike with our Elkhound – Caught During a Spring Rain

01.01.1970 01:00:00 05.04.2024 21:09:41
What started out as a cool, cloudy spring morning – a perfect morning for a hike, ended up being a rain-soaked retreat to our car before reaching the end of the trail. But we did enjoy our outing and appreciated all the sights and sounds of spring in bloom. Background: Our two-and-a-half-year-old Norwegian Elkhound, Skye, loves our hikes at Dungeness Trails. Here, trails traverse for miles through open fields and woods, and follow along the bluffs and banks of the Dungeness River. Hunting, running, digging, climbing, cooling off and quenching thirst in the river and the irrigation ditch, greeting people and dogs – a perfect world for Skye, and her owners!

8:: Hike on Spruce Railroad Trail along Lake Crescent

01.01.1970 01:00:00 03.04.2024 21:26:11
The Spruce Railroad Trailhead is only 9.2 miles by car via Joyce-Piedmont Rd from Salt Creek Campground where we had camped in our Travato van the previous night. Diane and I decided to go for a hike on the trail first thing in the morning when there would be fewer hikers. We have been on this trail a couple of times before with Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound, and every time it is a new experience depending on the seasons and the weather. Fortunately, the sunny, cool late winter day was perfect for a hike along the banks of the majestic Lake Crescent. And after our hike, we decided to go back to Salt Creek Campground for one more night. Background: Spring arriving soon, and feeling cabin fever from the dreary winter weather, Diane and I were eager to get out of the house and go camping in our Winnebago Travato 59kl before the throngs of RV campers flocked to the Olympic Peninsula. Although reservations were now open at the Clallam County Salt Creek Campground, the cold and rainy weather was predicted to turn dry and sunny over the next few mid-weekdays, so we decided to take our chance on finding an available RV site with a full hookup. We packed up our Travato with supplies for a two-night outing, loaded up Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound and drove the short 30-mile distance to the beautiful Salt Creek Campground that overlooks the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Upon our arrival, the campground was practically empty. Fantastic!

9:: Sunrise Over the Strait of Juan de Fuca - Salt Creek Campground

01.01.1970 01:00:00 29.03.2024 01:29:45
The first morning while camping at Salt Creek in our Winnebago Travato 59kl, I snuck out of the RV with my iPhone and Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound hopping to catch the sunrise of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It was definitely worth the early morning walk along the bluffs and banks. My only regret is that I did not bring my tripod with me. All videos are handheld, sometimes using a fence board or tree branch for support. 10:: Salt Creek Campground – Nature Sounds and Scenery Part 3

01.01.1970 01:00:00 28.03.2024 12:45:03
In this evening campfire video, as we enjoy an amazing view of the Strait of Juane de Fuca, Diane and I sip a few non-alcoholic beers and red wine drinks as the sun sets. Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound is always on the alert to scents of a passing tailless Racoon and heard of deer grazing in the open parklands. Spring arriving soon, and feeling cabin fever from the dreary winter weather, Diane and I were eager to get out of the house and go camping in our Winnebago Travato 59kl before the throngs of RV campers flocked to the Olympic Peninsula. In this Part 2 video, Diane and I and Skye, our 2.5-year-old Norwegian Elkhound hike to the beach from our campsite taking the Bunker to Beach trail through the woods. Spring arriving soon, and feeling cabin fever from the dreary winter weather, Diane and I were eager to get out of the house and go camping in our Winnebago Travato 59kl before the throngs of RV campers flocked to the Olympic Peninsula. The best weather of the year so far for driving my Model A was the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day! Come join us for a fun and scenic drive around rural Sequim, Washington.

15:: Spreading 3 Yards of Gravel to Level Our RV Pad

01.01.1970 01:00:00 16.03.2024 21:00:13
In preparation for installing an RV carport, I needed to move our existing gravel RV pad and driveway about two feet further inside our property line to meet the Clallam County Building Code requirement for an 8 foot offset from the side property border. First, I relocated the concrete block edging, making it straight instead of curved. Then I moved as much of the existing gravel as possible using a rake and shovel. Next, I determined the amount of gravel needed to fill in the lower areas by measuring the length, width, and depth. Using an online gravel calculator, the amount I needed was three yards. I placed an order with Blake Tile and Stone in Sequim, Washington over the phone, and a couple days later, the gravel was delivered. Diane helped me spread three yards of 5/8" minus crushed basalt gravel using a rake and shovel to fill in the low areas of our RV driveway and pad.

#shorts Port Willams Beach in Sequim Washington is one of our favorite places to explore with Skye, our two-year-old Norwegian Elkhound. I did my best to capture our fun-in-the-sun along this almost 2-mile long pristine beach in just 60 seconds.

18:: Gotcha! Norwegian Elkhound's Hunting Frenzy at the Beach #shorts

01.01.1970 01:00:00 27.07.2023 21:27:16
#shorts After hunting feverishly all morning in the rotting driftwood at the beach, Skye, our two-year-old Norwegian Elkhound was finally successful! Although hunting is instinctual, I always feel bad for the critters she catches. And this time, I think I was able to rescue the mother mouse and its baby before they perished from Skye's powerful jaws and sharp teeth.

19:: Remodel Hallway Laundry Area – Part 2

01.01.1970 01:00:00 26.07.2023 06:15:11
Paul and his grandson, Talen, responded to my call to come quickly and prepare our laundry room for the new LG washer/dryer tower. This video documents the final result. So, how do you update or remodel a 1970's hallway closet laundry area in a small house? Diane and I considered removing the wall between the master bathroom and laundry area merging the two, relocating the laundry room to the opposite end of our house at the northeast corner of our garage, and simply upgrading the washer and dryer. But all these options were technically problematic, impractical, or just uninspiring! So, we came up with a plan for increasing the space by replacing the two full-size washer and dryer with a combination washer-dryer tower unit, removing or modifying the old wall cabinets, and most importantly, eliminating the awkward pair of bifold doors.

#shorts Dungeness Trails is one of our favorite parks in Sequim to hike with Skye, our 23-month-old Norwegian Elkhound. Here, nature trails traverse for miles through open fields, woods, and along the bluffs and beaches of the Dungeness River. These trails pass through diverse ecosystems that are constantly changing with the seasons – grassy prairies, new and old confer and deciduous tree forests, beautiful, aromatic wildflowers, and a variety of edible berries. Skye goes crazy with excitement as she runs, hunts, digs, greets people and dogs, chases squirrels, climbs steep banks, then cools off in the Dungeness River and the irrigation canal, quenching her thirst with the pure glacier waters from the Olympic mountains. This is a perfect adventure playground for Skye, and a magnificent place to connect with nature for her owners!

#shorts For the first time, we attended the ice cream social and car show event hosted by the Sequim Prairie Grange. It was raining all morning, threatening our attendance, but happily, the rain stopped just in time for the event. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Sequim Dog Park, where we often take Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound, for doggy playtime and human socializing. The Grange is service and legislative leader benefiting farms and rural Americans.

31:: Sequim Irrigation Festival Classic Car Show and Grand Parade – Part 2

01.01.1970 01:00:00 12.06.2023 16:43:04
After a 3-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Classic Cruise and Show was back, and it was a magnificent, mechanical spectacle! Nearly 300 cars along with some vintage motorcycles participated in the Classic Cruise and Car Show! In this Part 2 video, as I reached the end of the Classic Cruise on E Washington Street in Sequim (Part 1 video), progress slowed as us drivers were directed into an open field where we parked our vehicles in rows for the car show. At least two cars overheated due to the hot weather and the stop-and-go progress. But not my Model A! It was at this intersection on Washington Street that the Grand Parade began, heading west in the opposite direction up Washington Street. I was a little disappointed that the Classic Cruise wasn't included in the actual Grand Parade. Anyway, as you can appreciate in this video, the stunning gathering of classic cars of unlimited variety was the ultimate eye candy for car enthusiasts. I hope that my walk-by videos of a few rows of almost 200 classic cars tells the story of the pristine, shiny beauty and ownership pride of this collection of classic vehicles. Background: The Dungeness River is the source of precious Olympic Mountains water that transformed the parched prairie into lush farmlands. The "big day" of the opening of the irrigation floodgates was on May 1,1896. A good friend texted me urging me to participate in the Sequim Classic Cruise and Show with my 1931 Ford Model A pickup, providing a link for online registration. I thought about this for several days and decided that providing I flushed and changed the coolant in my "A," and did a thorough cleaning it would be mechanically and visually ready for the parade and show. So, I signed up!

01.01.1970 01:00:00 01.06.2023 14:55:14
In this video, I take you on a brief tour of some of the locations along the Dungeness River where water is diverted into irrigation canals that ribbon through the Dungeness and Sequim Valleys, some water flowing in open ditches, some in underground pipes to be tapped by small and large farms and a few fortunate residential communities built on former farmland. Next, I show off my polished Model A in our driveway while Diane loads up our Outback with supplies, and I lift Skye into the back and of my "A," then drive to Sequim to the Classic Cruise staging area at the old JC Penny's parking lot. Here, I record video of some of the stunning classic cars, and their proud owners waiting for the Cruise to start. 33:: Vertigo Epley Maneuver BPPV Tutorial – Do it at Home!

01.01.1970 01:00:00 27.05.2023 01:26:23
My wife's symptoms were vertigo, dizziness and nausea making her miserable for several days. Having gone to her primary care physician numerous times with these symptoms, her doctor suggested she go to a physical therapist who has experience treating patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Her doctor referred her to FYZICAL Therapy and Balance Center in Sequim, Washington Britt Moss, a physical therapist at FYZICAL successfully treated my wife's vertigo symptoms using the Epley Maneuver several times. It has been a life-changing treatment for her. But when she could not get an appointment when she was suffering from vertigo, she searched the web for instructions on how to do the Epley Maneuver herself at home. My wife found lots of step-by-step instructions on the internet, but no videos of someone doing the Maneuver. Diane has tried to do this maneuver herself at home, but is difficult, especially getting her head far enough off the bed. So my wife asked Britt if he would allow me to record a video of him as he was treating her so we could use it for reference. Britt kindly gave us permission. While treating Diane using the four positions of the Epley Maneuver, Britt clearly explained what he was doing and what to look for in the patient's eyes. Now that we have this great tutorial video, next time I can help my wife with the Epley Maneuver. I hope you find this tutorial helpful for treating your vertigo (BPPV) at home!

34:: Some Pros Don't Like Vertical Videos #shorts

01.01.1970 01:00:00 21.05.2023 15:56:21
#shorts By happenstance, I met John Gussman, a local Sequim professional photographer and videographer at work launching his drone to record updated images of the Dungeness River watershed restoration project. John has been documenting the project since it began five years ago. During our brief discussion, John commented on my recording vertical video. Most veteran pro photographers, including myself, abhor the concept of vertical videos. But, similar to the monumental transition from analog (film) to digital photography, the near universal use of smart phones and social media is forcing another revolution – vertical is the rage!

35:: Changing the Coolant in a 1931 Ford Model A Pickup

01.01.1970 01:00:00 19.05.2023 04:21:47
I have not changed the coolant since my dad gave me his Model A 5 years ago. It is way overdue. Although I have only driven the A 150 miles, that doesn't mean the corrosion and rust slows down inside the radiator. So I had no idea what I would discover while flushing the radiator and changing the coolant. Having watched several videos on YouTube, I had a pretty good idea what to expect. I must say, my results closely parallel other Model A owners. You may notice some things that I did incorrectly, which I tried to cover up, but the bottom line is that I got the job done! Thank you for watching, and I appreciate your comments!

01.01.1970 01:00:00 07.05.2023 13:58:09
#shorts Tug-of-war is Skye's favorite playtime activity, both indoors and outdoors. It rained all day on Cinco de Mayo in the Puget Sound region, and Skye was bored! Diane and I did take her for a short morning walk around our community, holding large umbrellas over our heads to keep us from getting soaked, but it wasn't enough exercise to satisfy an 18-month-old Norwegian Elkhound. On this wet and dreary day, Skye constantly approached me carrying a tugging toy in her mouth, growling gently, poking me with her nose and pleading with her eyes for me to engage in a challenge of strength. Skye is skilled at this ferocious game, and she never intentionally bites my hand, although I do sometimes get scraped by a tooth during our struggles.

In this video, Keaton, a professional plumber installs a new Delta shower surround. Background: Having completed the major home renovations and remodeling of our late 70s rancher, it was time to remodel our small master bathroom. Finding an available bathroom remodel contractor was next to impossible, so I made arrangements with the contractor who remodeled our kitchen to do the job through his subcontractors. Like I did after our kitchen remodel project, I will paint the bathroom walls after the remodeling is complete.

01.01.1970 01:00:00 27.04.2023 13:18:19
I was working on removing the old toilet myself when Paul and his grandson, Talen, arrived to begin a basic remodel of our master bathroom – widen the doorway and shorten the shower plumbing wall. This needed to be done before the flooring was replaced, which was scheduled for the next day. Our objective was to make access and movement in this small bathroom easier for us, especially when we reach the point of using a walker. 42:: Elkhound Hunting OCD at Dungeness Rec Area #shorts

01.01.1970 01:00:00 17.04.2023 23:15:00
#shorts Our 17-month-old Norwegian Elkhound, Skye, has serious hunting OCD! Wherever we take her for walks and hikes – meadows, woods, beaches, anywhere a critter might be living or had simply passed by, Skye's keen sense of smell will draw her to track the scent, often pulling us into the bushes. If she spots a squirrel, Skye will dive into thick underbrush and bark frantically at the base of the tree where the squirrel has climbed to safety. If it is a burrowing animal, Skye will locate the tunnel opening and dig frantically, often pulling out mouthfuls of the critter's nest. On this walk, it took all my strength to pull Skye away from her obsessive digging.

#shorts Skye is an OCD Hunter! No matter the terrain - meadows, woods, culverts, outbuildings, etc. But this is the first time I witnessed Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound ripping up a rotting log at the beach to catch a critter that certainly made this old, rotten driftwood log its home. Skye was determined, but I pulled her away to continue our hike before she caught the critter. Next time, Skye.
