A high school senior who wasn't able to attend his graduation on June 7 got his very own celebration on Monday.
Daniel Steelman's family and former teachers from Rock Hill High School surprised "Dan Tha Man," as some call him. They gathered around him outside his home to commemorate the huge life event.
“I didn’t even know they provided this, so wow, so sweet," Daniel's mother Amber Kamke said.
Daniel has Kleefstra syndrome. The National Institutes of Health categorizes Kleefstra syndrome as an intellectual disability which can lead to "autistic-like features, childhood hypotonia, and distinctive facial features."
He was not able to walk the graduation stage due to his sensory sensitivity, but with a little imagination, a ceremony was conducted right outside his house.
"Congratulations," Rock Hill Superintendent Dr. Tommy Schmolze said. "We wanted to make sure you got to participate in this. A great milestone. And we are so proud of you."
