The epistle reading appointed to be read at Quinquagesima is from St. Paul's first letter to the church at Corinth. In the thirteenth chapter, Paul speaks profoundly of the divine virtues of love. With Quinquagesima being the final sunday before lent, this epistle becomes a topic of thought in preparation for the quickly approaching penitential season. In the words of the hymn "My Song Is Love Unknown," Samuel Crossman eloquently explores this divine love shown to the people of God on the cross. The beautiful line "Love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be," along with the rest of the verse surrounding it explains our unworthiness of such a love, and yet how our Lord and Savior was sent down to take on the burden of sin for us.
