Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! Alleluia! The fast of Lent has ended and Christ has risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity. Through this miracle of God's love and mercy, our sins have been washed clean in his blood and we too will rise again to new life. In celebration, we sing praises to God on this holy day through many of the church's greatest hymns. This hymn by Christian Fürchtegott Gellert is one of my favorite Easter hymns. It's text boldly proclaims that through Christ's resurrection, we have eternal confidence and hope in him. This beautiful thought is perhaps best portrayed in the final line, "Faith shall cry, as fails each sense: Jesus is my confidence!" May this faith ever be your cornerstone even as senses fail and your final breath is taken. Text: Jesus lives! The vict’ry’s won! Death no longer can appall me; Jesus lives! Death’s reign is done! From the grave will Christ recall me. Brighter scenes will then commence; This shall be my confidence. Jesus lives! To Him the throne High o’er all the world is given. I shall go where He is gone, Live and reign with Him in heaven. God is faithful. Doubtings, hence! This shall be my confidence. Jesus lives! Who now despairs Naught but blasphemy’s asserted. Grace toward sinful men He bears, That to Him they be converted. God in Christ makes no pretense; This shall be my confidence. Jesus lives! For me He died, Hence will I, to Jesus living, Pure in heart and act abide, Praise to Him and glory giving. Freely God doth aid dispense; This shall be my confidence. Jesus lives! I know full well Naught from me His love shall sever; Life nor death nor pow’rs of hell Part me now from Christ forever. God will be a sure Defense; This shall be my confidence. Jesus lives! and now is death But the gate of life immortal; This shall calm my trembling breath When I pass its gloomy portal. Faith shall cry, as fails each sense, Jesus is my confidence! I have taken it at a breathlessly slow and meditative tempo in order to truly evoke the deepest meaning of this holy season. It evokes a deeply melancholic feeling, bringing to mind the central theme of Ash Wednesday. Our mortal and fallible flesh comes from the very dust of the earth and thus is where it shall return when these earthly vessels fail. Thus, prepare yourself in this season of lent for the day of the resurrection in which all will be made new and our lips will be opened once more to show forth the praises of the Almighty and everlasting Father. This was performed on the Azzio sample set by Piotr Grabowski. Remember that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return. In the thirteenth chapter, Paul speaks profoundly of the divine virtues of love. With Quinquagesima being the final sunday before lent, this epistle becomes a topic of thought in preparation for the quickly approaching penitential season. In the words of the hymn "My Song Is Love Unknown," Samuel Crossman eloquently explores this divine love shown to the people of God on the cross. The beautiful line "Love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be," along with the rest of the verse surrounding it explains our unworthiness of such a love, and yet how our Lord and Savior was sent down to take on the burden of sin for us. This was played on my newest sample set, the organ of the Palace of the arts in Budapest, Hungary. Enjoy! Filled with colorful harmonies and lines of music elegantly flowing into one another, Bach crafted this work in two distinct yet appropriate styles. The prelude reminds me more of a fantasia with is improvisatory nature. It features arpeggiated lines moving chromatically downward. The short, wild nature of the prelude is complimented nicely by the fugue. This fugue, while being very nicely written, is incredibly strenuous on the player (which, obviously, is all the more rewarding) and can at times induce throwing music across the room. The end result, however, is something that is incredible to play. Though my performance is far from clean or refined, it was a joy to do and a pleasure to learn. This was performed on the Hinsz organ of the Bovenkerk in Kampen, NL. Enjoy! Life gets overwhelming sometimes and I had to step away but I am glad to be back and hopefully greeting the familiar faces who comment and view my videos. This lovely piece from Bach's Orgelbüchlein is a staple of the epiphany organ repertoire. The hymn on which it is based was written by Elisabeth Cruciger who uses beautifully vivid words to illustrate Christ taking on human flesh and coming again both as a child in a manger and as the risen conquering Lord who comes to judge the living and the dead. May this splended epiphany work fill you with the joy and praise (even in spite of a sub-par performance on my part) described in verse four: "Before You mortals lowly cry, "Holy, Holy, Holy, O blessed Trinity!" This was performed on the 1741 Hinsz organ of the Bovenkerk in Kampen. Contrebombarde link: https://www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/music/58192 Enjoy! It is characterized by dynamic, stylistic, and tonal variety which Elgar has masterfully and carefully woven into every variation. The best known of these 14 variations is the 9th which is known most commonly as "Nimrod." I decided to perform (or more accurately butcher) this wonderful piece using an arrangement by Pierre Gouin. It is very well suited to a large instrument with lots of tonal resources in order to create the grand and majestic crescendos that this piece demands. I performed this on the incredible free Composite Friesach-Cracow sample set created by Les Deutsch. I love this sample set and I gladly use it alongside my several paid samples so it gets a reccomendation from me. I decided to give a shot at performing Richard Elliot's improvisation on the hymn tune FIDELITY. This tune is used for the LDS text for How Firm a Foundation. While I'm not a Mormon myself, I very much enjoy this lovely hymn tune. Since it fits with the traditional text of the hymn, it could be used in other churches as well. This arrangement is incredibly difficult and very taxing to play (thankfully its only 3ish minutes). It begins with soft, rhythmic setting of the melody that brings to mind a trumpet call in the distance. As it continues, it grows in intensity and volume for verse two. We then enter a pseudo Toccata section which is not only faster, but much more difficult as well. Elliott states the melody again and, after a glorious key change, restates the theme one final time, which perfectly showcases the solo reeds of my newest sample set, before reaching the triumphant final chord. You can find\ the composers original (and much better) performance here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8EIxU4YygU I performed this on the Redlands University Casavant sample set by Evensong Music (originally produced by CLR). It is the organ of my home church, and subsequently the first Pipe organ I ever played. Having served as organist there, I know the instrument very well. In this demonstration I tried to show how such a small instrument (II/13) in such rough shape can still make beautiful sounds. Bear in mind that this organ is in desperate need of service. Aside from being out of tune (it gets tuned about twice a year), it has several mechanical and electrical problems as well. With that in mind, it is a lovely instrument and I hope you will like it as much as I do. It's also worth mentioning that this was my first time using my new microphones and recording setup for churches. I hope the audio quality is better than previous videos when I used the camera's built in microphone, but you'll have to be the judge of that. ··· ··· ··· ··· Alleluia! 2:: Erbarm dich mein, o Herre Gott, BWV 721 - J. S. Bach

··· ··· ··· ··· To begin the season of lent, this wonderful chorale paints the text of Psalm 51, pleading for mercy and forgiveness from God. Soli Deo Gloria

··· ··· ··· ··· The epistle reading appointed to be read at Quinquagesima is from St. Paul's first letter to the church at Corinth. Enjoy! Soli Deo Gloria

4:: Prelude and Fugue in A Minor (BWV 543) - J. S. Bach

··· ··· ··· ··· This wonderful work of Bach's is one full of color, thematic complexity, and contrapuntal genius. Enjoy! Soli Deo Gloria

··· ··· ··· ··· I sincerely apologize for the extreme delay in posting anything. Soli Deo Gloria

··· ··· ··· ··· Elgar's Enigma variations are a very famous and wonderful work for orchestra. Contrebombarde link: https://www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/music/56692 Enjoy!

··· ··· ··· ··· After yet another break, I have decided to upload another video. I think it is quite well suited to this instrument. This was performed on the organ of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Prairietown, IL. Enjoy!

··· ··· ··· ··· The organ of @st.peterprairietown1858 is one that I hold very dearly in my heart. It begins with a majestic Fantasie, quoting the hymns "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and "From Heavn' Above to Earth I Come." Next is a trio quoting the Dutch Christmas Hymn "Ere zij God" or "Glory to God." The third movement is an Allegretto on "Angels we have heard on high." The final movement, which is my personal favorite, is a set of 5 variations on the children's song "Er is een kindeke geboren op aard," which translates into "A Baby Has Been Born on Earth." This was played on WH Zwart's own organ, the Hinsz organ in the Bovenkerk in Kampen, where he served as organist for many years. Enjoy!
