'Dies Irae' (the Day of Wrath), Larghetto doloroso, was composed by the Russian-American pianist composer, Vladimir Drozdoff (1882-1960) on the day Sergei Rachmaninoff died, on march 28, 1943.
It is the first piece of 'Au Tombeau de Rachmaninoff'.
The "Dies irae" has been used in the Roman Rite liturgy as the sequence for the Requiem Mass for centuries, as made evident by the important place it holds in musical settings such as those by Mozart and Verdi. The first melody set to these words, a Gregorian chant, is one of the most quoted in musical literature, and is appearing in the works of many composers, also the theme is used in many movies.
