Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter. It is the day we recognize and commemorate Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Just a few days later, Jesus will be put to death on a cross and then be raised to life again on Easter Sunday. There are a lot of details about Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem that we could point out and break down and analyze, but I want to spend just a few minutes on this one detail that has sort of captured my imagination this week.
As I was studying this week, I ran across a statement from an ophthalmologist who shared that it is a medical truth that crying is part of an important release valve in many people. Crying may even be a chemical release for emotional stress. He said that tears actually release a chemical that helps relieve stress. This is why we often feel better after we cry. Tears have a medicinal effect. Sweat pours out of the body on a hot day to keep the body cool. Tears flow to release the stress of the soul like the sweat of the body.
But today isn’t about our tears. There are plenty of lessons we could draw from her about this, but today is about Jesus’s tears. It is not about our weeping; it is about Jesus’s weeping. As I thought about Jesus’s weeping, two thoughts came to me. The first is that Jesus weeps with us in our sorrow. The second is that Jesus weeps for us in our sin.
