The Our Father (or Paternoster): Where it came from and how it was originally used.

In Luke 11, the Apostles asked Jesus to teach them to pray as John the Baptist taught his own apostles to pray. Jesus then provided them with (most of) the Paternoster prayer. In Late Antiquity and into the Medieval Era, monks were praying all 150 Psalms in Latin; however, for those who were illiterate (both monks and laity), the Paternoster recited 150 times was allowed for substitution. Eventually, the Ave Maria (Hail Mary) replaced it which became the Marian Psalter. Finally, after the Holy Mother appeared to St. Dominic, the Paternoster was brought back to the Psalter and inserted between each of the 10 Ave Marias to create the decades, all of which were assigned Mysteries on which to meditate during recitation.
