Universität Göttingen Der Film "Who Cares?" wird erstmalig am Donnerstag, 7. Dezember 2023, um 20 Uhr im Göttinger Kino Lumière, Geismar Landstraße 19, gezeigt. Im Anschluss an die Vorführung laden die Philosophin und Genderforscherin Prof. Dr. Christine Bratu und die Filmemacherin Sandra Eckardt zur Diskussion ein: Wie wollen wir in Zukunft mit Fragen von Care und Wissenschaft umgehen?
Innerhalb weniger Wochen veränderte die COVID-19-Pandemie die Art und Weise, wie Menschen arbeiten und wie sie ihr Familienleben und ihre Pflegearbeit organisieren. Dies gilt auch für den akademischen Kontext. Die Diskussion, wie wissenschaftliche Wissensproduktion mit der Fürsorge für Kinder oder naher Familienangehöriger vereinbar ist, erfuhr mit Beginn der Pandemie eine neue Dynamik. Im Film „Who Cares?“ stehen die individuellen Erfahrungen von vier Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen mit der Vereinbarkeit ihres Arbeitsalltages und der Fürsorge ihrer Kinder im Mittelpunkt.
Die Filmemacherin Sandra Eckardt begleitet sie in den Jahren der Covid 19-Pandemie in ihr häusliches Büro und ihren beruflichen und privaten (Familien-)Alltag und gibt Einblick in die tiefe Verflechtung von wissenschaftlicher Arbeit, individueller, aber auch gesellschaftlich geprägter Biographien in Zeiten gesellschaftlicher Krisen.
Der ethnografische Film entstand im Rahmen des gleichnamigen interdisziplinären Forschungsverbundes „Who Cares? An Investigation on the Compatibility of Research and Care Work in the Time of Covid-19 and Beyond” am Göttinger Centrum für Geschlechterforschung. Die VW-Stiftung förderte das Projekt.
This project a) analyses the current contentious public discourse on the compatibility of work and family responsibilities of German researchers as it is shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, b) investigates the experience of researchers at Göttingen University in regard to the multiple requirements of research and care work and document it with a film, and c) works out a philosophical theory of compatibility.
We discuss in how far the current discourse and practices are consistent with core democratic commitments such as gender justice. As the significant push in digitalisation caused by the pandemic has long lasting effects on the organization of research, teaching and care work in the future, our findings provide a valuable tool to critically assess public gender policies proposed both in the context of the COVID_19 pandemic and beyond.
