PertSnergleman's Review:
-------------------------------------------

Despite a tender toe and spurts of diarrhoea forcing him to leave the court for six minutes during the second set, Connors rewarded his faithful who view the left-handed double-grunter as an adopted New Yorker.

At 31 years old, Connors found himself surrounded by younger pros in the top 10. But as this $2 million tournament demonstrated, Connors remained an individualist whose combative spirit and unrelenting style has become as much a legacy to the sport as his tournament titles and his status, with this victory, as the first man to win more than $5 million playing tennis.

Any hopes Lendl had of becoming the first male player in 23 years to win the championship without losing a set were quickly dispelled by Connors, who now has beaten Lendl in 11 of their 14 meetings and extended the string that male left-handers have enjoyed as Open champions since 1973.

Neither player performed at the emotional and physical peaks they are known for with Lendl serving two double faults in dropping serve in the second game, and Connors lost his serve from 40-0 in the following game with a game-ending double fault.

Asked to compare this 1983 victory with his 1982 triumph, Connors said, ''It's not sweeter, but it's the first time I've won two in a row. I had chances to win two in a row and have let them pass by. I just wanted to do it one more time.''

At a time when Lendl needed his big serve the most, with a set-point at 5-4 in the third set, the lanky Czechoslovak double-faulted into the net, bothered by gusty winds and perhaps his own nerves. Revived by the roars of the crowd and Lendl's unexpected gift, the third-seeded Connors then broke serve with two winning volleys and swept the remaining games en route to the $120,000 first prize and his 100th career singles title, easily tops on the career list.

Another capacity crowd of 20,575 (18,430 paying) swelled the total attendance for the championships to a record 427,313 (376,676 paying).

Enjoy my friends!
