Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen
Jesus is the alpha and the omega, who always was and always will be.
When God stated, "Let US make man in OUR image," to whom was he referring?
He was referring to Himself, that is, the Trinity: the Son and the Spirit, who existed with Him before time and creation.
So in John 1.1, "in the beginning was the Word, and the Word with with God, and the Word WAS God," he means Jesus. Jesus is the Word, the Gospel, the Good News, the Kerygma, who incarnates through the Blessed Virgin Vessel to be sacrificed for the sins of mankind.
He confirms this in the Scripture at John 8.58: "Before Abraham was, I am."
