The first recorded Holy Cross ever erected in the continental US was in 1559 by the Dominican Friars, when the Spanish expedition landed on Santa Rosa Island on August 15th. The first order of business was the Latin Mass. Santa Rosa, FL, or "Saint Rose," is officially the first noncontinuous settlement in the US. This Holy Cross was erected by the Knights of Columbus (de Luna Assembly) in 1959 on a dune which has withstood the test of time and elements, while the surrounding dunes have been swept away.
