Andy kitten recovers after consuming contaminated raw fish
--2 MAY 2020:
On 2nd May at 9am, Andy kitten's heart was beating rapidly for 15 minutes and he was crying. That evening, I took it to the vet and we got to know that Andy kitten had eaten something poisonous. It affected his central nervous system giving him neurological problems such as blindness, loss of coordination in his limbs and difficulty walking. He would sneak into the corners for safety and to be at rest. The vet gave him 2 injections.
---3 MAY 2020:
On 3rd May, the vet gave him some vitamin in his mouth which he was consuming.His heartbeat, body temperature and vitals were all normal and he will survive. He would neither eat nor drink or make urine/stools on 2nd and 3rd May, so we let his body to naturally recover so that he takes adequate rest.
---4 MAY 2020:
On 4th May, Andy kitten had a teaspoon of Hill's prescription food. He made urine and his blindness disappeared. At times, Andy would vomit a little saliva.
---7th MAY 2020:
On 7th May, Andy recovered and was normal.
CAUSES:
There is a high possibility that he has consumed raw fish contaminated with traces of Mercury which gives symptoms such as loss of coordination in the limbs and difficulty walking. Mercury is generally concentrated in the head and intestines of the fish. We feed him cat food, boiled chicken, cooked fish. But he always ate raw fish if someone discarded it in our compound.
CONCLUSION:
Please do not feed your cats raw fish because of the dangers of Mercury contamination. There are also fishes which have been preserved in Formaldehyde which is a dangerous carcinogen. Always remove the head and intestines, wash the fish thoroughly in running water and boil the fish before giving it to the cats.
