The Bendlerblock. An Israeli German school project. Talking about the 20 july plot

Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg The Bendler Block housed key departments of the Nazi Wehrmacht. And: Here is where the organizational center of the overthrow attempt of 20 July 1944 was. Here is where Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg issued the Valkyrie Orders, to overthrow the terror regime. Here is where he was shot to death by the Nazis in the early morning hours of 21 July 1944, together with other plotters.
Israeli and German young people explore together with each other the history of the Bendler Block, and they focus on Stauffenberg’s character, and on the resistance against Nazism. How is the resistance memorialized in Berlin today? What role do the crimes of the Nazis, in particular, the Holocaust, play in this connection? How do the views of Germans and Israelis differ? What role do the histories of the participants’ own families play in this regard? The film illustrates the different viewpoints of the young people, and it looks at how they talk about them with each other.
A project of the Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg (museum for the history of the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg), the SCORA (Schools Opposing Racism and Antisemitism) program at the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart, the Remstal Gymnasium in Weinstadt, and the Eynot Yarden School in Amir, Israel.
