It seems like everybody has a story … about the time when something looked ‘all good’ but turned out to be anything but. It’s for this reason, we say things like: “looks can be deceiving”, “things aren’t always what they seem”, etc. What is true in our day was true in the first century, too.
In Matthew 5:31-48, Jesus is continuing to expose the dichotomy between street-level superficiality and spiritual substance. He shows that there is often a massive gap between what looks good to us and what is good before God. Ultimately, Jesus’ words drive us toward our need for the grace He is so eager to give.
