Ways out of hatred and despair? Experiences from Bosnia and Ukraine.

· 23.04.2024 · 13:00:08 ··· ··· Tuesday ·· 2 (2) Katholische Akademie Berlin
The experience of war and the suffering that accompanies it is one of the greatest tragedies for people and nations. The two countries Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ukraine are united by the fact that such current or recent experiences shape people's lives.

Since the end of the war in the 1990s, the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a candidate country for EU accession, has been determined by the Dayton Agreement, which was signed in 1995. Although this treaty grants the country a peace order, it has also cemented social division in the country. Ukraine, on the other hand, has been suffering massively from Russian aggression for over two years, against which civil society and the army are trying to fight with admirable morale and support from the West – the outcome is uncertain.

We would like to discuss with our interview partners whether and how – despite such traumatising experiences – it is possible to develop survival strategies and to look to the future, both as individuals and as a society, even if it is completely in doubt.

We listen to and speak with:

Reverend Prof. Dr Šimo Maršić, Director of the John Paul II Youth Centre and lecturer in Pastoral Theology at the Catholic Theological Faculty in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Olena Voichyk, Head of the project department of Caritas Spes, Kyiv (Ukraine)

Moderation:
Thomas Müller-Boehr, Responsible for Dialogue and Partnership at Renovabis, Freising
