Written by Cornish musicians in the 1800's these wonderful carols have been sung in underground mines across the world. Formed each year from the different church choirs in St Ives, this choir celebrates the story behind ‘Christmas’ through an authentic and harmonious presentation of Cornish music. MD William Thomas noted: For many years St.Ives has resounded to the singing of Carols (Curls), written by Cornish musicians, including Thomas Broad, Joseph Tanner, Thomas Merrit, and Colan (Cully) Willliams. Each Chapel had its own Carol Choir and for two weeks before and after Christmas Day they would sing around the streets and stately homes in the St.Ives and Carbis Bay area. Sadly the introduction of double glazing, has meant that choirs are no longer audible above the sound of TVs and stereos. Despite this the Chapel choirs from Fore Street and Bible Christian still continue to keep these unique carols alive and many locals gather to listen wherever they meet to sing them.

Traditional Christmas Eve Carolling in St. Ives: "And so this is Christmas - a very old St Ives custom with our mixed chapel choirs celebrating the birth of Christ by singing Cornish carols in the streets of Downlong. Starting at Market Place, they stopped 11 times before arriving at Mount Zion on Christmas Day for a rousing rendition of Colan 'Cully' Williams' St Ives carol 'Hellesveor', written in 1908." THE CAROL CHOIR (The tradition as told by Johnny Barber) We joined the Fore Street carol choir The night was crisp and clear, Then started off at Virgin Street With Cully’s ‘Hellesveor’. ‘Andsome it was and no mistake, The great bass deep and rich, The altos and the tenors too Were good and true to pitch. One dear chap was standing by Said ‘Well I must confess It’s like an organ iss it ez, An organ nothing less’. We worked The Digey, through Love Lane, It still continued dry, Did Bunker’s Hill and Bailey’s Lane, Then on to Chy-an-Chy. Past Doble’s Wall, on up Dick’s Hill, Still singing clear and sweet, Turned right at top for Island Square, Next stop Teetotal Street. Our voice now were rather hoarse, The clarinet gone flat, So all agreed to do Carn Crows And leave it go at that.

We open the second half with Praetorius utterly beautiful 'Quem Pastores'. Here he arranges the “four boys” each with their own instrumental ensemble, before the tutti burst in with a paean of rejoicing. 2. Next, the Band play another series of 'Bransles de Villages' – based on tunes culled from the villages of rural France and Germany. There is a certain ‘rudeness’ and naivety to the melodies which make a nice contrast with the art music in the rest of the programme. 3. 'How Brightly Shines' is a reflective 10-part work for which I have chosen the reduced-scoring version using soloists and Basso continuo. Two choirs dialogue in praise of Christ and in the middle section Praetorius has them imitate bells. 4. With 'Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort' we enter deeply into the Lutheran chorale tradition. Scored for 4 choirs – and 4 instrumental ensembles – this is Praetorius at his grandest. The reference to “the rage of Pope and Turks” heard early on in this piece locates it firmly in the anxieties of the early 17th century, the growing Turkish occupation of Europe and – for Protestants – the equally unnerving Counter-Reformation which was shortly to boil over into the 30 years’ war. This war cost hundreds of thousands of lives and it wiped out musical establishments across Europe. Writing in 1623, just 2 years after Praetorius’ death, Grossman records “In many towns and places where music formally flourished and where there was singing praising and glorifying of God every Sunday and feast day by 16 or even more voices in 2, 3 or more choirs, now one can barely manage an old piece of plain 4-part music. Schutz writing a decade later added “it is plain for all to see how the praiseworthy art of music has not only fallen heavily into decline through the unceasing dangers and vicissitudes of war in the dear fatherland of our German nation. In many places music has been completely abandoned altogether alongside the general ruin and havoc which unhappy war is bring in its train. 5. Next, we turn to a quietly meditative Christmas piece - 'Joseph Dearest Joseph Mine'. This rocking lullaby is sung by the soloists accompanied by recorders and trombones. 6. The Band now enjoy a final outing with a suite of Ballets which begin with a stately Pavane, then three sprightly Galliards, before the full ensemble enter to play the highly syncopated finale. 7. We end the concert with Praetorius largest work – 'In Dulci Jubilo cum Tubae' written in 1615 for the wedding of Margarve Wilhelm of Magdeburg and Princess Dorothea of Wolfenbuttel. It is scored for five choirs and a fully separate brass ensemble. Praetorius takes the well-known tune through various exciting permutations – loud to soft, fast to slow, before seeming to fade away until he suddenly surprises by bringing everyone back in - fortissimo - and the longest final chord in musical history! Footnote: In preparing for this concert it was necessary to spend a year creating new performing editions in which the parts had to be transcribed into modern clefs, note-values, and time signatures - the ranges of the original renaissance instruments ‘translated’ into their modern counterparts - the German and Latin texts all translated into English - and the vocal and instrumental forces ‘orchestrated’ as per his instructions AMDG - Video © 2023 The Lighthouse. https://www.youtube.com/ @thelighthouse123

We open with a stately instrumental Passamezzo in 6 parts played by the full Band and which provides a suitable ‘overture’. 1. This is followed by the Christmas Nun Komm Der Heiden Heiland for 3 choirs and 4 instrumental ensembles. Praetorius intermingles soloist sections in ‘madrigalian’ style versus thundering choruses for the combined forces. We are varying the tempi in line with Praetorius instructions - because in such works madrigal and motet styles follow one another, intermingled and interchanged, the beat has to be governed (changed) accordingly” The work is based on the Lutheran chorale, sections of which you will hear throughout and which give the piece gravitas and nobility. Towards the end he throws caution to the wind and includes virtuosic parts for the upper brass; these would originally have been played on wooden renaissance cornets but our two professional trumpeters are quite equal to the challenge! 3. Next comes the delightful Allein Gott in der Hoh sei Her - again written for 3 choirs although on a more intimate scale; choir one, handled by the countertenors and brass, is ‘answered’ by a second choir of soloists and then the ripieno choir. 4. The Strings and recorders then play a set of Bransles - a type of French dance popular to the present day and danced by couples in a line or circle. Praetorius is most famous today for his dances; they reveal that he was not averse to writing unashamedly popular and tuneful music. 5. Omnis Mundus in another large-scale Christmas piece in which the soloists reflect on the incarnation of Christ with intermissions from choruses in 15 parts enjoining everyone to rejoice. 6. A Boy is Born is a Christmas piece where Praetorius scores in the congregation. You will recognise the tune so please join in with verses 2, 5 and 7... v2. And there He lay in manger poor, Alleluia, whose reign shall last for evermore, Alleluia. v5. He lived like us in form and dress, Alleluia, without our taint of wickedness, Alleluia. v7.Therefore let us with one accord, Alleluia, on this His birthday praise the Lord, Alleluia. 7. There then follows a series of Voltas for the instrumentalists starting with the 4 bassoons. The music ebbs and flows with different permutations until the full ensemble erupts in a triumphal final dance. 8. We end the first half with his monumental Hallelujah ist Erstanden (Christ is risen) employing 5 choirs and written in 1614 for the court in Dresden. Again, we hear snatches of the underlying chorale from which all the music is cleverly derived - interspersed with the Hallelujah refrain for the combined forces. Footnote: In preparing for this concert it was necessary to spend a year creating new performing editions in which the parts had to be transcribed into modern clefs, note-values, and time signatures - the ranges of the original renaissance instruments ‘translated’ into their modern counterparts - the German and Latin texts all translated into English - and the vocal and instrumental forces ‘orchestrated’ as per his instructions AMDG - Video © 2023 The Lighthouse. https://www.youtube.com/@UCpA6BB4kGx3Bvl72pdZ8FGQ

16:: 'In Dulci Jubilo cum Tubae' (Praetorious) at St. Mary's Church, Penzance, October 2023

··· ··· ··· ··· The concert ends with Praetorius' largest work – 'In Dulci Jubilo cum Tubae' written in 1615 for the wedding of Margarve Wilhelm of Magdeburg and Princess Dorothea of Wolfenbuttel. Concert Part One: https://youtu.be/6999RamWPRA Concert Part Two: https://youtu.be/pxzkItUvgV4 PLAYLIST of tracks: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWChdc-_Apx0X2L6owOPqiKIO1ghtyDu8 On 21st October 2023, 65 singers and players from across Cornwall, members of Truro Cathedral Choir, local singers and a ‘Renaissance Band', directed by Russell Blacker, gathered to perform music by Michael Praetorius (1571- 1621). Recorded at St. Mary's Church, Penzance, Cornwall: https://www.penleecluster.org.uk In a year of preparation for the concert, Russell created new performing editions in which the parts had to be transcribed into modern clefs, note-values, and time signatures - the ranges of the original renaissance instruments ‘translated’ into their modern counterparts - the German and Latin texts all translated into English - and the vocal and instrumental forces ‘orchestrated’ as per Praetorius' instructions. This event followed previous concerts of music by Gabrieli and Monteverdi, both famous contemporaries of Praetorius. Praetorius is chiefly known for his famous collection of dances (Terpsichore), a number of these were played and the concert also showcased several of his stunning choral works which are written on the grandest scale – for this concert, 4 choirs, 12 soloists – and separate ‘choirs’ of bassoons, recorders, trombones, trumpets, strings and organs. Michael Praetorius (1571 - 1621) was an extraordinary figure: born plain Michael Schultze, the son of a Lutheran pastor, he studied divinity and philosophy at the University of Frankfurt, was fluent in a number of languages, became one of the foremost composers of the C17th century, was famous as an organist and designer of organs, and a music theorist whose writings had considerable impact on performance practice of the day – and today. His vast output ranges from simple 2 & 3 part pieces for small church ensembles right up to massive multi-choir settings of Lutheran chorales, drawing heavily on the ‘Venetian’ style of spatially separated ensembles. Although he regretted never travelling to Italy to visit his contemporaries Gabrieli and Monteverdi, he passed his influence onto a generation of composers including the famous Heinrich Schutz with whom he collaborated for 4 years. Praetorius’ output was prolific; 17 large volumes of music were published between 1605 and 1613, plus a further 9 volumes of chorales and vernacular music for the Lutheran service for 2 to 16 voices, and an extensive collection of Latin music for the church. At his death he was planning a further multi-volume collection of secular music of which the famous Terpsichore - a compendium of more than 300 instrumental dances - was the first. He was also planning a further volume of church music for up to nine choirs! Praetorius allows for highly flexible orchestration so that the pieces can be performed by smaller ensembles or expanded to 12, 16, or 22 parts arranged in 2, 3, 4 or 5 choirs. He called this adaptation and arrangement. He instructed the choirs to be separated spatially: The instrumental choirs (strings, brass, recorders, bassoons etc) should be placed in a special position to one side - near to the vocal choirs – or, for variety, the placement can be arranged so that they are opposite to each other. In certain of my works four boys are to be positioned in four separate locations in the church, opposite each other or wherever is suitable. (as heard in 'Quem Pastores' https://youtu.be/hOqg1qhHuFs ) Speaking of the soloists who handle the madrigalian ‘concertante’ parts he writes - 'it is a musician's job not just to sing, but to sing artfully and charmingly in order that the heart of the listeners may be touched and their emotions stirred. In each of the choirs there should be 2 or 3 singers with fine, natural, pure and dependable voices who should sing sung gently moderately and charmingly - but the full choirs should rebound and resound majestically'. He was also planning a further volume of church music for up to nine choirs! His letters reveal that he was constantly receiving commissions to compose, conduct, and perform which led to extensive travel across Europe. As a musical theorist he compiled an encyclopedic record of contemporary musical practices, he made refinements to figured-bass practice, he discussed the normal use of instruments and voices in ensemble, and the standard pitches of the day, as well as modal, metrical, and fugal theory. His unfinished manuscripts were bequeathed to a friend but they all disappeared in the 30 years’ war which broke out a year after his death. ··· ··· ··· ··· The magnificent pipe organ at St. Mary's Church, Penzance, Cornwall was tragically destroyed in a fire on 23rd March 1985. Much of the organ dated from 1769. Originally built for the former St. Mary's Chapel, it was rebuilt by Crabb of Exeter in the new church in 1835. S.S. Wesley, then organist of Exeter Cathedral, played at the first service. Improvements were made by J.W. Walker of London, Heard of Truro, Hele and Co of Plymouth, culminating in its full restoration by Lance Foy of Truro in 1981. A series of organ recitals and choral concerts were recorded in summer 1973, the only known recordings of the organ. Many tracks had not been heard since until restoration of the tapes began in 2023 so that this historic organ's unique voice can be heard again. Some recordings were played in the church on 22nd March 2023, 38 years after the fire. The visiting musicians were student organists, choral scholars and singers who kindly gave their consent for their performances to be used in recordings for public sale in aid of St. Mary's. After the fire, a fund-raising cassette tape was produced as a reminder of the fine instrument once in the church. This is side 1. Walker of London, Heard of Truro, Hele and Co of Plymouth, culminating in its full restoration by Lance Foy of Truro in 1981. A series of Organ Recitals and Concerts had been recorded in summer 1973, the only known recordings of the organ. This track was not heard again until tape restoration began in 2023, so that the historic organ's unique voice can sound out once more. The visiting musicians were student organists, choral scholars and singers who kindly gave their consent for their performances to be used in recordings for public sale in aid of St. Mary's. The visiting musicians were student organists, choral scholars and singers who kindly gave their consent for their performances to be used in recordings for public sale in aid of St. Mary's. 'Canon in B minor' (Robert Schumann) was performed on 10th August 1973 by Robin Jackson who has for this restoration in 2023, contributed the following notes: "It may be a surprise to many but Robert Schumann had studied the organ during his younger days. He wrote in 1850: “Lose no opportunity of practising on the organ, there is no other instrument that takes a swifter revenge on anything unclear or sloppy in composition or playing.” Clara Schumann’s diary entry for 24th April 1845 reads: “We received on loan a pedalboard for beneath the piano, which has given us much pleasure. Its primary purpose was to enable us to practise our organ playing, but Robert soon discovered a further interest in this instrument.” The pedal-piano, now something of rarity was popular for a time in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The instrument featured a pedal board as found on the organ so that the player could play bass notes with the feet. Having a serious interest in Baroque counterpoint and the organ works of J.S. Bach, Schumann became very interested in this invention. Schumann composed two sets of short pieces for pedal piano: Opus 56, Six Studies in Canonic Form from which the Canon in B Minor is part, and Opus 58, Four sketches. Opus 60, the six fugues on B.A.C.H. could also be played on the pedal piano. I came across the Canon in B minor following Nicolas Kynaston’s 1970 recording of it on the organ of the Royal Albert Hall."
