On 21st October 2023, 65 singers and players from across Cornwall, members of Truro Cathedral Choir, local singers and a ‘Renaissance Band' with MD Russell Blacker, gathered for a concert of music by Michael Praetorius (1571- 1621)

Recorded at St. Mary's Church, Penzance, Cornwall: https://www.penleecluster.org.uk

Programme notes:
1. We open with a stately instrumental Passamezzo in 6 parts played by the full Band and which provides a suitable ‘overture’.

1. This is followed by the Christmas Nun Komm Der Heiden Heiland for 3 choirs and 4 instrumental ensembles. Praetorius intermingles soloist sections in ‘madrigalian’ style versus thundering choruses for the combined forces. We are varying the tempi in line with Praetorius instructions - because in such works madrigal and motet styles follow one another, intermingled and interchanged, the beat has to be governed (changed) accordingly” The work is based on the Lutheran chorale, sections of which you will hear throughout and which give the piece gravitas and nobility. Towards the end he throws caution to the wind and includes virtuosic parts for the upper brass; these would originally have been played on wooden renaissance cornets but our two professional trumpeters are quite equal to the challenge!

3. Next comes the delightful Allein Gott in der Hoh sei Her - again written for 3 choirs although on a more intimate scale; choir one, handled by the countertenors and brass, is ‘answered’ by a second choir of soloists and then the ripieno choir.

4. The Strings and recorders then play a set of Bransles - a type of French dance popular to the present day and danced by couples in a line or circle. Praetorius is most famous today for his dances; they reveal that he was not averse to writing unashamedly popular and tuneful music.

5. Omnis Mundus in another large-scale Christmas piece in which the soloists reflect on the incarnation of Christ with intermissions from choruses in 15 parts enjoining everyone to rejoice.

6. A Boy is Born is a Christmas piece where Praetorius scores in the congregation. You will recognise the tune so please join in with verses 2, 5 and 7...
v2. And there He lay in manger poor, Alleluia, whose reign shall last for evermore, Alleluia.
v5. He lived like us in form and dress, Alleluia, without our taint of wickedness, Alleluia.
v7.Therefore let us with one accord, Alleluia, on this His birthday praise the Lord, Alleluia.

7. There then follows a series of Voltas for the instrumentalists starting with the 4 bassoons. The music ebbs and flows with different permutations until the full ensemble erupts in a triumphal final dance.

8. We end the first half with his monumental Hallelujah ist Erstanden (Christ is risen) employing 5 choirs and written in 1614 for the court in Dresden. Again, we hear snatches of the underlying chorale from which all the music is cleverly derived - interspersed with the Hallelujah refrain for the combined forces.

Footnote: In preparing for this concert it was necessary to spend a year creating new performing editions in which the parts had to be transcribed into modern clefs, note-values, and time signatures - the ranges of the original renaissance instruments ‘translated’ into their modern counterparts - the German and Latin texts all translated into English - and the vocal and instrumental forces ‘orchestrated’ as per his instructions
