··· ··· ··· ··· One of the most perfect pieces by anyone, Mendelssohn's Octet for strings has one of the best success records in the business. It just doesn't get played unless it's going to be done very, very well.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 22.06.2024 · 14:00:47 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· For many, Liszt's music is synonymous with "vulgar trash, "empty virtuosity," "pseudo-profundity," and other negative qualities. But is it really bad, or more importantly, bad FOR you? A brief comparison to the use of monosodium glutamate in chili crisp recipes offers an answer.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 20.06.2024 · 16:00:25 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· This 27-CD set makes an excellent case for Pappano's work with the Orchestra of The Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, offering a wide range of symphonic and choral works by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Mahler, Bruckner, Verdi, Rossini, Britten, Bernstein, Respighi and others in some surprisingly successful performances. That said, the bronchial audiences in these mostly live recordings take some getting used to.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 03.06.2024 · 16:00:35 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· The original Vienna Octet stopped recording in 1972, and was immediately replaced by a new group of younger players. Here they are, doing most of the same stuff, just as beautifully, along with the Vienna Winds, Horns, Flute Trio, and a few other groupings, beautifully annotated and packaged by Decca Eloquence (Australia). The music for wind ensemble is especially valuable, including works by Mozart, Schoenberg, Ligeti and quite a few unexpected others.

··· ··· ··· ··· Perfect performances, especially of orchestral works, are very hard to come by--that elusive combination of interpretive and technical excellence, splendidly recorded to boot. Here one telling example, Rimsky-Korsakov's Dance of the Clowns (Tumblers) from The Snow Maiden, courtesy of Gerard Schwarz, the Seattle Symphony, and Naxos Records. Listen and be amazed!

··· ··· ··· ··· This remarkable score accompanies legendary Japanese film-maker Akira Kurosawa's late masterpiece RAN, about a warlord who divides his holdings among his three sons with tragic consequences (shades of King Lear). The music is unforgettably atmospheric while at the same time sounding like no other composer, and it fits the film like a hand in a glove.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 29.06.2023 · 14:00:12 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Here's one of those legacies that puts paid to the notion that major labels have no sense of idealism, for if anyone was a musical idealist, it was Robert Craft. His interests lay almost exclusively with ultra-modern or very early music, and that is what he recorded, mostly splendidly, commercial viability be damned. Kudos to Sony (and Craft's own foundation) for making this noble recorded legacy available to all.

··· ··· ··· ··· We finally come to the big Wolf--Hugo that is--but even more importantly we encounter Swedish composer Dag Wirén, a genuine master of economical musical expression. Come to think of it, Hugo Wolf was that too, wasn't he? The "other" Wolf in this mix is Ernst Wilhelm, a minor classical-period composer of great charm.

I see this returning as a digital-only release in 2022, but that's scant comfort. Some things ought to be available everywhere, in every way, forever.

··· ··· ··· ··· This first class collection of 15 Revueltas "masterpieces" features excellent performances mostly by Eduardo Mata and David Atherton (and Leopold Stokowski for good measure). It should never be out of print. Revueltas was a major voice in 20th-century Latin-American music, and it's not as if there's a lot of competition for this repertoire.
