Jaguar XJ220, developed by Core Design and published by JVC in 1993.
"Welcome to the 200 club! Thanks to your Jaguar XJ220 at 200-MPH-plus, the fastest super car on the road today. You are the hottest rookie sensation on the SCR Grand Prix and World Tour circuits. Now it's time to unleash your quad-cam baby and let the racing world feel your Jaguar's bite."
Whilst I'm more familiar with the Amiga original, this is not a bad version of the game which is enhanced with more varied trackside details although I'm not sure exactly how much the SegaCD scaling hardware is being put to use as the screen resolution and overall framerate is quite low so you don't get a real sense of speed.
The video is broken down into two parts. Part one is the World Tour mode which sees you traveling across 16 countries whilst optimising your route to save on travel costs. Part Two is the Grand Prix mode where you race the 16 tracks in a sequential manor. The aim in both modes is to have the highest rank on the leader board. Between races you have the opportunity to repair your car which costs money. The game ends if you run out of money.
The game can be overly challenging (near impossible to win) on a couple of tracks mainly due to the AI cars that treat corners the same as a straight line. Annoying when I have to get out the car and push round a 90 degree corner and the ai just speed past ;) Some of the qualifying times are unreal too, not taking into account the need to slow down. The France and Germany Tracks in particular. I guess using manual gears would have helped but I much prefer to just hold a button down and not do much thinking while playing these games ;) Also, the race order never changes so you are competing against the same driver in every race.
On the last race of the World Tour I went into pits just to show it a little. Didn't matter that I lose the race as I had enough points to win overall. Overall though, the game doesn't feel that rewarding for the effort. A single end screen that is the same in both modes and I don't now why there is even a constructers championship league table as it has no effect on the end of the game in either mode.
I've added the game over screen to the end of the vid which you get if you run out of money or lose overall (not 1st on league table)
