Today we looked at Namibian authorities facing calls to halt the planned extension of a port on the Shark Island peninsula following the discovery of unmarked graves and art efacts linked to the Herero and Nama genocide.
Forensic Architecture, a non-profit research agency, reported that it had identified sites of executions, forced labour, imprisonment, and sexual violence from the period when the island was used as a concentration camp by the German empire between 1905 and 1907.
To unpack this, we spoke to Sima Luipert, a fourth generation survivor of the Nama and Ovaherero genocide as well as adviser to the Nama Traditional Leaders Association.
But first we spoke to genocide reparations lobbyist and former parliamentarian, Usutuaihe Maamberua.
